AIS: Themes in American Indian Literature

AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature

This spring trimester, American Indian Studies is offering AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature for WEC. This class meets Sundays 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.

The course is structured around a number of writers working within a particular theme such
as Native Voices of Minnesota, Voices from the Southwest, Poetics and Politics of Native
Writing, Women and Power in Native Literature, Urban-Reservation: Homing, and American
Indian film-literature adaptation. Students focus on primary texts, comparing and
contrasting theme, voice, aesthetic, or cultural emphasis as it shifts or arises across the
group of texts. Course cross-lists with English.

(Prereq.: ENL 220 or 221, or a 200-level literature course, or consent of instructor.)

AIS Classes That are Offered for This Fall

Fall Semester 2012

AIS 105-Introduction to American Indian studies Tu/Th 9:40-11:10 Marubbio
Designed to introduce students to the content areas of the American Indian Studies curriculum, this course includes an overview of American Indian history, federal Indian policy, land issues, reservation and urban issues, cross-cultural influences, and American Indian literature, art, music, and language.(fulfills engaging MPLS)

AIS 264-American Indians in the Cinema Tu/Th 1:30-3 Buffalohead
Indians in the Cinema surveys various images of American Indians created by Hollywood and television. Focusing on films from the 1910s to the present, the course provides an understanding of how American Indians were portrayed in film historically, how this image has evolved over the past century, and how it is reflective of Western cultural and racial ideologies.

REL 370- American Indian Spirituality W 6-9 Jacobson
Religious beliefs, spiritual customs, and philosophy of North American Indians are studied. Tribal similarities and differences are explored as are tribal relationships with nature, religious oversight of life cycles, sacred ritual ceremonies, and beliefs in an afterlife. (fulfills writing skills req.)


ENL 255-American Indian Literature Tu/Th 1:30-3 Marubbio
American Indian literature offers a survey of contemporary American Indian writing, including non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and drama. The course explores the richness and diversity of American Indian literature, and the ways in which literature reflects and illuminates American Indian culture and traditions. The course emphasizes close readings of literature and public speaking skills through in-class presentation and small group discussion.(fulfills speaking skills req.)

OJB 111-Beginning Ojibwe MW 6:30-9:15 Greschyk
An introduction to the language and culture of the Ojibwe (Chippewa). Emphasis is on vocabulary, reading, writing, and conversational skills. Classroom practice will include linguistic patterns and oral interaction.

HIS 236-American Indian History MWF 11-12 Buffalohead
A study of the native people of North America from the pre-Columbian period through European exploration and settlement to the present, emphasizing American Indian contributions to world culture, tribal structure, and inter-governmental relations.

It's Time to Find the Writing Lab

The Augsburg College Writing Lab is located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk). So far this academic year, tutors in the lab have conducted almost 2000 sessions working with students on their writing assignments and they can help you, too. No appointments are taken; just stop by. Hours are as follows:

Monday: 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. & 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Tuesday: 12:00-2:30 p.m.; 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 7:30-10:00 p.m.

Wednesday: 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Thursday: 12:00-2:30 p.m.; 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 7:30-10:00 p.m.

Now Hiring: IT Student Technical Assistant

The IT department is searching for a few more student employees to do technical work this summer. This position (previously the "IT intern" position) works closely with the LFCs to support Faculty & Staff computing including troubleshooting technical issues, repairing computers, and installing software. In addition, the IT Technical Assistants prepare most of the new computers that arrive throughout the summer. While this position only runs through the summer, opportunities exist to continue in this position throughout the 2012-13 school year.

We're looking for self-motivated, responsible students with a high-level of computing experience for this summer position. Make Pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer

On Thursday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, we will be making pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer (conkerrcancer.org). The pillowcases will be donated to children and teens in hospitals and cancer treatment centers. We need volunteers to cut, iron, and sew with us, and we also need fabric, sewing machines, and irons. If you can help, please email Wendi Wheeler at wheelerw@augsburg.edu or Jen Nagorski at nagorski@augsburg.edu.

Beard/Mullet

To celebrate the arrival of the marble sculptures of Sverdrup and Oftedal in the lower level of the Lindell Library (thanks Arlie, Bruce and Jacob!), come visit the mini-exhibit "Beard/Mullet: The Questionable Styling Choices of Georg Sverdrup and Sven Oftedal." You will be able to marvel at the many ways Georg (our second president) and Sven (our third president) styled themselves over the years.

Also be sure to look at "In the Air, On the Ground," a selection of aerial views and campus plans for Augsburg dating back to the 1940s.

2012 Fitness Incentives - Deadline Approaching

All employees who are enrolled in Augsburg's health plan were eligible to participate in the 2012 Fitness Incentive Plan.

To participate, enrollees must:

· Work out an average of 3 times per week from January 1 – March 31
· Work out an average of 4 times per week from April 1 – June 30

Enrollees in High Deductible Health Plan ($2500 deductible) have the potential to be rewarded with the following:

· $250.00 deposited into your Health Savings Account (HSA) in April for working out at an average of at least 3 times per week from January – March
· $250.00 deposited into your HSA in July for working out an average of least 4 times per week from April – June

Enrollees in the $1000 deductible plan and enrollees in the High Deductible Health Plan ($2500 deductible) that do not have an HSA account have the potential to be rewarded with the following:

· Entry into a drawing to happen in April for a chance to win one of 9 prizes for working out at least 3 times per week from January – March
· Entry into a drawing in July for a chance to win one of 9 prizes for working out at least 4 times per week from April – June

You MUST successfully complete phase one (working out 3 times per week from January – March) to be eligible for rewards for completing phase two (working out 4 times per week from April – June).

To track your workouts, you must fill out the tracking spreadsheet that is found on the Wellness Resources Community Moodle site.

You must submit your completed tracking spreadsheet via email to Kelly Crawford ( crawfork@augsburg.edu ) no later than MONDAY, APRIL 9, 2012.

Managers Training: Preventing Harassment

The College has scheduled the first training offerings for managers only. The topic will be Harassment (this includes sexual harassment).

**This training has been developed for employees with direct supervisor managing of staff as part of their job requirements.** Additional trainings for all employees will be offered sometime later this year. We are limiting each session of this required training to a maximum of 22 people. Additional trainings for all employees will be offered sometime later this year.

Learn about Chiapas in Spanish Conversation

Who are the Zapatistas? Where is Chiapas? Learn about one of the most important areas in Mexico and Latin America while practicing your Spanish. Professor Joseph Towle (Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies) will talk about his experiences as a human rights observer and will share some of his insights into the region, the people and the Zapatista guerrilla. Please join us this Thursday in the Riverside Rm., 2nd fl., Christensen Center for this exciting event! The conversation group meets from 11:00-1:00 p.m.; the Chiapas conversation will start at 11:15 a.m. All language levels are invited to join us. Drop in when you can and stay for as long as you like.
