Sisters' Camelot Benefit/Fine Line Music Cafe

Four Minnesota Americana music acts grace the stage of the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis Tuesday March 20 to benefit local non-profit group Sisters' Camelot, featured recently in a segment on the Today Show on NBC. Musical performances by Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, Two Many Banjos, Katey Bellville, and Painted Saints highlight the fundraiser for Minnesota's only organic food shelf.

Each group will perform a set of original material in an event sure to please all fans of roots music in the Twin Cities. The doors open at 7 pm and chamber country artists Painted Saints kick off the event at 7:30. Katey Bellville, the Twin Cities' sweetheart of Americana, bluegrass, and folk, is on at 8:30 with her quartet. Contemporary bluegrass heroes Two Many Banjos perform at 9:30, and Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, frontrunners of the roots music scene resurgence in MN, close the benefit with an hour-long set ending at 11:30 pm. Tickets are $10 each, attendees must be 21 or older. Students 21+ with valid student id receive half off admission.

Three students created the benefit concert as part of a project management course at Augsburg College. The students chose to help Sisters' Camelot, now in its fifteenth year, because they admire the efforts of the mobile organic food shelf/mobile kitchen in addressing hunger and poverty issues in the poorer communities of Minneapolis and St Paul. Sisters' Camelot rescues fresh ripe organic produce, prepackaged whole foods, bulk goods, and other items from organic wholesalers. They then make "random drops" where they show up unannounced at a busy intersection or neighborhood park in low-income areas around the Twin Cities metro area, and give away the rescued food free of charge from their brightly painted bus. They also randomly give away free meals from their state-of-the-art mobile kitchen.

Sisters' Camelot rarely receives donations from foundations or government. It's $130,000 annual budget is met by fundraisers and by the efforts of dozens of canvassers, mostly volunteers, who go door to door seeking donations. Despite severe financial limitations, in recent years they've managed to distribute over 1.5 million pounds of food annually. The rescued food, mostly items approaching their expiration dates and overstock items, comes from Albert's Organics in Mounds View, Co-op Partners in St. Paul, and some farmers markets during the growing season. Said Minneapolis City Council member Cam Gordon, "They started as a grass-roots, under-the-radar effort. It's like they're growing up now."

For more information regarding this event please contact Augsburg student Greg Michels at 952-451-4307 or email at michelsg@augsburg.edu. Please visit sisterscamelot.org for more information regarding Sisters' Camelot.

Keeping Track of Auggies

SWK Auggie Stephanie Nelson '13 Studying in Mexico

Stephanie Nelson '13 - SWK Major - shares her experience visiting a rural community as part of her semester abroad in Mexico in her most recent blog post at http://swkmexico.blogspot.com/
____________________________________________________________________________

One of the important themes of week three was understanding and working with rural or indigenous communities. One of the things that impacted me the most was the talk with Xochil and the visit to the small town Tlamacazapa (Tlama for short).

Xochil works with the nonprofit, Atzin. The nonprofit works primarily with the village of Tlama. The organization consists of several leaders and a number of organizers from the community. Everyone involved works very hard in many different areas. Some of these issues include domestic violence, malnutrition, alcohol and drug addiction, and various diseases due to unclean water.

Xochil has a lot of knowledge about the community and shared a lot of information with us. We also learned a lot through visiting the town. Tlama is a small town of about 6,100 people in the state of Guerrero. The main economic income comes from weaving palm. This is an age old practice that the people of Tlama have been doing for generations. In order to make a living this way, many of the men travel to larger cities to sell the baskets and other goods made by the women.

Another challenge in Tlama is getting enough clean water. In order to get water today, the residents must walk to one of three wells. All of these water sources naturally contain lead and arsenic. What's worse is that because of the incline, water from dirty streets runs into the wells. The bottom two wells are generally used for washing, while the top one is where people get their drinking water.
Well in Tlamacazapa

We got to see some of the other work Atzin does within the community. They provide a school and a health clinic as well as other various resources. The organizers of Atzin are all members of the community who see a need for change and are trying to do something about it. They also work to educate others in the community.

While we were in Tlama, we had many different experiences. Upon our return, we discussed them and while everyone had a unique perspective on the trip, there were some common themes. For example, many shared stories of being called out for being an outsider. Saying things like "So you want to be one of us?" as the group took turns carrying water. Or, "You lost?" as a student walked by.

For me, this was the first time I felt completely like an outsider in Mexico. Because I cannot understand everything people yell out on the street means, I can usually ignore it. But in Tlama I felt as though I was really intruding. The combination of learning about the extreme poverty and injustice along with these feelings, gave me a much different perspective on my role here.

The experience of seeing how much physical labor was required just to survive was very eye opening. I am often unaware of all the privileges I have. Seeing the way of life in Tlama reminded me that not everyone has all the luxuries that I take for granted. I hope this experience will help me work for change in the ways that I can.

Valek Receives NCAA Elite 89 Honor

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/3/11/wres031112.aspx?path=wrestling

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Augsburg College's Tony Valek (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) was named the recipient of the NCAA Elite 89 Award as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships, it was announced on Saturday.

According to the NCAA: "The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA championships."

A three-time NCAA All-American at 149 pounds, Valek is an accounting/general management major with a 3.87 grade-point average. He has earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-America honors his final three seasons, while also earning Capital One Academic All-America (CoSIDA) first-team honors in 2011.

A four-time national tournament qualifier, Valek finished as national runner-up at 149 in both 2011 and 2010. Valek finished this season in third place at 149, finishing his season at 34-1. Of his 34 victories, 29 were bonus-point victories (15 pins, two technical falls, 12 major decisions).

Valek finished his career with a 136-25 record, with 87 bonus-point victories (60 pins, six technical falls, 21 major decisions).

Valek received the Elite 89 award from Augsburg Athletic Director Jeff Swenson, chairman of the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Committee, prior to the championship matches on Saturday evening at the La Crosse Center.

On Thursday, Valek and four other Auggies – 197-pounder Brad Baus (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.), 141-pounder Will Keeter (SO, Twin Falls, Idaho), 165-pounder Tommy Teigen (SO, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) and heavyweight Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) – were named NWCA Division III Scholar All-Americans, and Augsburg received the highest team grade-point average award from the NWCA, with a 3.7341 team GPA.

Augsburg finished second as a team at the Division III national championships on Saturday night, earning five Al-American honors.

Auggies Top Wrestling Scholar Listing

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/3/8/wres030812.aspx

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- For the second time in program history, the Augsburg College wrestling team achieved the highest team grade-point average in the nation in NCAA Division III wrestling, it was announced on Thursday.

The Auggies recorded a team grade-point average of 3.7341 to lead the nation in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Division III Scholar All-America Team Award listing. It marks the second time that the Auggies recorded the nation's highest team GPA in wrestling; the first was in 1999, when the Auggies had a 3.480 team GPA. Augsburg has finished in the top 10 in team GPA 11 times since the award was first given in 1998, with this year's GPA the highest in Augsburg's history in the award listings.

According to the NWCA (from its 2011 news release on the academic awards): "To be awarded this honor, teams must meet the following criteria: the team GPA is calculated as an average of the top 10 students on each team. At least six of the 10 chosen must have competed in the NCAA qualifying tournament, while the other athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the teams scheduled contests."

The team awards were presented at the Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association Championship and Hall of Fame Banquet, held at the La Crosse Center on Thursday evening in advance of this weekend's NCAA Division III National Championships.

"I'm proud of the whole team. It's a total team effort," said Augsburg head coach Mark Matzek. "I'm proud of the guys buying into the program and into one another. It confirms that you don't have to just focus your potential on the mat. You can focus your potential in the classroom and on the mat, too. It's a great way to start the weekend."

In addition, five Auggies earned NWCA Division III Scholar All-American honors -- all five competing at this weekend's national championships. Augsburg 149-pounder Tony Valek (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) earned Scholar All-American honors for the third straight year, as did 197-pounder Brad Baus (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.). Receiving Scholar All-American honors for the first time were 141-pounder Will Keeter (SO, Twin Falls, Idaho), 165-pounder Tommy Teigen (SO, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) and heavyweight Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS).

Valek is an accounting/general management major with a 3.87 grade-point average. Baus is a sociology major with a 3.68 GPA. Keeter is a mathematics major with a 3.63 GPA. Teigen is an exercise science major with a 3.63 GPA. Johnson is an accounting/management major with a 3.29 GPA.

Auggies 2nd at D-III Wrestling Championships

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/3/8/wres031012.aspx?path=wrestling

The Augsburg College wrestling team placed second over the weekend at the NCAA Division III National Championships in La Crosse, Wis. Heavyweight Chad Johnson won the individual national championship, while Orlando Ponce placed second at 157 pounds, Will Keeter placed third at 141, Tony Valek placed third at 149 and Brad Baus placed fourth at 197.

The top four teams at the NCAA championships receive team trophies, and Augsburg has finished among the top four every season since 1989 – a 24-year streak of finishing in the top four in NCAA national team competition. The 24-year streak is the longest active streak in NCAA wrestling among all divisions, and is the second-longest streak in NCAA wrestling history, behind the 29 of Oklahoma State from 1928-59.

With five All-Americans, the Auggie wrestling team also extended its streak of claiming at least five All-Americans to 24 straight years – also every year since 1989.
