Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:

Engaging all students – These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.
Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum – These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.
Developing our community – This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.

Jeremy Lin - Racism and Asian Stereotypes Forum

Jeremy Shu-How Lin an American professional basketball player with the New York Knicks of the NBA. After receiving no athletic scholarship offers out of high school and being undrafted out of college, the 2010 Harvard University graduate reached a partially guaranteed contract deal later that year with his hometown Golden State Warriors.

Lin seldom played in his rookie season and was assigned to the NBA Development League (D-League) three times. He was waived by Golden State and the Houston Rockets the following preseason before joining the Knicks early in the 2011–12 season. He was again assigned to the D-League and continued to play sparingly. In February 2012, he unexpectedly led a winning streak by New York while being promoted to the starting lineup, which generated a global following known as Linsanity.

** Lin is one of the few Asian Americans in NBA history, and the first American player in the league to be of Chinese or Taiwanese descent.

With all of this being said.. there are quite a few other remarks ...such as :
"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise." - Floyd Mayweather

or..

"Chink in the Armor: Jeremy Lin's 9 turnovers cost Knicks..." - ESPN editor..

FORUM:

This FORUM will serve as a place where students and other community members can come together to talk about sports, issues regarding race, and to combat stereotypes. We hope that you invite as many people to come out to talk, listen, and get educated! All ages are welcome and all view points and perspectives are respected!

Auggie Athletics

Augsburg in New York Times on Monday

A feature on the wrestling rivalry between Augsburg College and Wartburg College (Iowa) is in Monday's (3/5) New York Times. Read it here:

The story is on the front page of the Times' sports section. Written by Greg Bishop, the story profiles the wrestling rivalry between the two Lutheran schools. Over the last 17 years, the NCAA Division III national championship in wrestling has been held by either Augsburg (nine of its 11 national titles) or Wartburg (eight titles).
