Science Hall Floor Restoration

Starting on Monday, March 14, (the first day of spring break), Facilities Management will be undertaking a project that will last throughout the week. On Monday, March 14th, we will be closing the northwest entrance to Science Hall along with the Sverdrup /Science link hallway adjacent to the Science Hall elevator on first floor. The reason for the closing is that we are doing restorative floor work in this area and it requires us to close these access points. These access points will open again upon completion of the work. The estimated completion date is Tuesday, March 15, in the afternoon, but may be as late as Wednesday afternoon, March 16.
The remainder of the work will be completed in the evenings by the custodial projects crew and will include taking up the old wax and applying several new layers of wax to the floor. This custodial work will not interfere with normal work flow, but traffic in hallways should be kept to a minimum to allow proper curing time for the new wax. Heavy carts and other hard-wheel objects should be kept off the floor and foot traffic kept to a minimum.

Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

Call for Proposals – Summer Scholarship Grants

Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.

Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Call for Proposals – Instructional & Course Design

Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of CTL's Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.

Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.

Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.

Call for Proposals – International Travel Grants

Applications Due March 30

Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.

Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:

International professional travel – Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.

The Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Application Process
Submit proposals for international conference travel using the online Faculty and Staff Professional Travel application on the CTL website. Applications for international conference travel are due March 30, 2011 for travel in 2011-12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012); these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Submit proposals for the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant using the online Group and Individual Project form on the CTL website. Applications are due March 30, 2011 for travel during Summer 2011; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

ACYTI brings together high school leaders for an intense week of friendship, classroom learning, worship, solitude, contemplation, discernment, and action on Augsburg's urban campus. Participants learn together, pray together, play together, explore the city together, and discern God's work in our world together.

Thank you Auggie Blood Donors

CCHP and Memorial Blood Centers thanks all of the Augsburg donors who participated in donating blood last week. Despite the snow storm and lower than usual pre-registrations we were at 93% of our goal.

For those interested, we had 33 whole blood donations and 10 double red cell donations for 43 units donated. Those 43 units will help save 109 lives -- way to go Auggies! In addition we had 29 first time donors.

Always hoping to improve on that we have already set out fall donation date and hope to be able to provide on-line scheduling as well. So watch a-mail for further details.

Walk Over to UofM Meditation Group TONIGHT

Last night's Mindful eating event drew 30 students! We're planning to have even more come out tonight--so come join the growing numbers. Mindfulness for Students and the Augsburg College Meditation Club will be hosting the second of two Evenings of Mindfulness with Br. Chi Sing. Tonight will focus primarily on sitting and walking meditation and will feature mindfulness teachings from Br. Chi Sing. Light snacks and refreshments will be served after the event. 6:30-8:30 in the President's Room of Coffman Memorial Union on the U of M's east bank campus. Designed particularly for those members of our community who participated in the AVID Faculty Pilot Program (but open to all), this session will facilitate discussion in such a way that session participants will be/become break-out session leaders. Consider, in advance, this question: how do you engage students? Bring something from your work/classroom (e.g. syllabus, template, student work, assignment, classroom activity, etc.) that demonstrates your answer to this question. (You may attend even if you choose not to bring something along.) (Beverages and snacks available.)

Last Day to Feed the Pig

Friday is the last day to deposit your change and dollars from your piggy banks in support of your class gift competition! So far we've raised more than $600 for Augsburg Student Scholarships. Auggies are supporting Auggies with their spare change!

Help your class win the party at Augsburg house, the home of President Pribbenow! The class with the most students participating will win the party, and it's too close to call!

Remember, it doesn't matter how much you donate, or how full your bank is, it's counted on participation. However, if there is a tie, the class that raised the most money will win the tie-breaker!

We'll be tabling in Christensen Center from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Friday, bring in your pigs anytime, and you'll also get a free "I Fed the Pig" t-shirt. You can also register to win a $50 Target giftcard.

Even if you didn't get a pig, you can still donate your spare change and dollars to help your class win and support the scholarship, thanks to those who have already generously given back!
