Distinguished Contributions-Nominations due 2/21

The Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite your nominations for the 2011 awards for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through teaching, scholarship, and mentoring and advising.

Call for Nominations. To submit a nomination, please send an email to Judi Green (greenj@augsburg.edu) and include the following information:
* The nominee's name (must be a full-time faculty or staff member at Augsburg College)
* A brief rationale for nominating this individual
* The names and contact information of at least three people who can provide additional information about the nominee's specific contributions (this may include faculty, staff, leaders, students, or alumni that have specific knowledge about the contribution)

Selection Committee. This year's selection committee consists of Barbara Farley, Velma Lashbrook, Lee Clarke, Martha Johnson, Lori Peterson, Dixie Shafer, and Ben Stottrup. This is a juried process. The committee will identify finalists and then gather and review additional information before selecting award recipients.

The awards will be announced at the Honors Convocation on April 15, 2011 and at the Faculty Recognition Luncheon on May 5. The recipient of the award for excellence in teaching will be invited to give the keynote address at the Opening Convocation in September.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Speaking of Scholarship Series

Call for Proposals – Summer Scholarship Grants

Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.

Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Call for Proposals – Instructional & Course Design

Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of CTL's Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.

Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.

Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

Call for Proposals – International Travel Grants

Applications Due March 30

Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.

Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:
International professional travel – Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.
The Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Application Process
Submit proposals for international conference travel using the online Faculty and Staff Professional Travel application on the CTL website. Applications for international conference travel are due March 30, 2011 for travel in 2011-12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012); these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Submit proposals for the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant using the online Group and Individual Project form on the CTL website. Applications are due March 30, 2011 for travel during Summer 2011; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families

Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create tie blankets by the students. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric shops. The blankets will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Donations can be dropped off in Sverdrup Hall's lower level Education Department office suite until February 26, 2011. Thanks!

Outstanding Staff Nominations--DUE TODAY

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

TRiO/SSS Residential Peer Mentor Apps--DUE MONDAY

Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.

Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor's degree.

RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role model–authoritative without being authoritarian.

There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

Dynamic Leadership & You - Tuesday, February 22

CAO welcomes ALL student leaders to Dynamic Leadership & You, the second Spring installment to the Student Leadership Series. The goal of this series is to strengthen the awareness, leadership, management, and organizational skills of student leaders around a myriad of different topics.

This session will discuss leadership as a service-oriented, dynamic, and reflective piece of the student leader identity and how you, as a leader, can involve this in your work.

Will O'Berry, Residence Hall Director with the Department of Residence Life, will facilitate this workshop on Tuesday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100.

Please remember, commissioned student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than two workshops per semester. Chartered student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than one workshop per semester.

Additionally, these workshops are for all student leaders on campus. So if you are not part of a formal organization, feel free to attend.

She has accepted a position at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where she will serve as Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. The college community is invited to a farewell reception for Carrie on Monday, Feb. 21, Oren Gateway Center 100, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Focus the Nation

Focus the Nation is a clean energy workshop and panel held to educate students, staff and faculty about local and national energy issues. Augsburg's event will involve four workshops to show the community how they can get involved with clean energy initiatives even on a small scale.

The workshops will be followed by a Panel Discussion held in the Chapel from 3:00-4:30.

Love Every Body Week Begins Monday

CCHP invites students to stop by Christensen Center on Monday 2/21 between 11:30 - 1:30 as we kick off "Love Every Body Week" to send a "You are Beautiful" card with a personal greeting from you to remind someone how much you appreciate both their inner and outer beauty. We will also have an opportunity to have your photo taken alone or with friends again to remind yourself that YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!!

Second Annual Leadership Institute

"Everyday Anti-Racism: Developing Awareness, Skills and Action In the Service of a Socially Just Society," presented by Heather Hackman of St. Cloud State University, will focus on ways you and your student organization can identify and fight racism on campus and in the greater community. All students are welcome to attend on February 26th from 1-5 PM in the East Commons.

Through the on line registration you may sign up for bus transportation from Minneapolis and Rochester to Luther College, admission to all sessions, meals, and lodging.
The bus will load at Augsburg (Minneapolis)1:45 pm and at Augsburg (Rochester) at 3:30 pm on Friday and return at approximately 6 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday. Day students will be housed with Luther College students in residence halls. WEC and grad students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying in a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. Feminist Film Friday: Hip Hop

The Feminist Film Series presents HIP HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES today from 4:30-6:30 in the Student Lounge in Christensen:

By self-proclaimed "hip-hop head" Byron Hurt, this is a "riveting documentary that tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today's hip-hop culture." The film "provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions."
