Zyzzogeton Registration and Information

Please help us in locating students who have done research or creative activity of high quality. Our annual celebration of student scholarship and creative activity, Zyzzogeton (or "Z") sponsored by LSAMP, McNair & URGO*, is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14.

Poster Session: April 13, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Oral presentations, literary readings, music performances, art showing, etc. April 13-14, 2011

Students can participate in "Z" via:
-The poster session on Wednesday, April 13 (3:00-5:00). URGO/LSAMP/McNair pay for poster printing costs.
-An alternative format for presenting their work. For example, this could be a musical performance, a literary reading, art showing, or an oral presentation.

What you need to know:

Deadline for Submission (includes an abstract of your research or creative activity): Friday, March 11, 2011

Philanthropy Week Kicks off Monday

Student Philanthropy Week at Augsburg runs February 28-March 4. Stop by the tables in Christensen Center from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. daily to participate in a variety of activities and show how you give back to your community including writing thank you notes to donors or posting your story on the Philanthropy Wall of Fame.
This is also your chance to bring in your piggy bank to contribute to your class gift. The class at the end of the week that has the highest number of participants turning in their piggy banks will win the class party at Augsburg House, the home of President Pribbenow on April 5. If you haven't received your free class piggy bank, you'll also be able to pick yours up this week.

Thinking of Quitting Tobacco - "Filter This"

Now is the time! You have help and support! Do you want to quit? Are you thinking about quitting? Have you thought about it for some time and did not know where and when to get help and support? "Filter This" is a group of people that are dedicated to quitting tobacco use. Some quit "cold turkey" and some quit with the help of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), and some have chose other paths. No matter what the strategy, aid or philosophy, everyone needs help and support. Join us and listen or ask questions, speak of your experience with quitting, your struggles and your victories. This is not easy, this is hard, your not alone and quitting can be a proposition full of fear and anxiety. It does not have to be.

The meeting is Every Thursday from 4-5pm in OGC 113. This Thursday we will host Deborah Dora from Smiley's Clinic and Quit Plan. We will also be offering pizza for those who attend. Come and get it!!

Augsburg Native American Film Series

Club Native is a candid and deeply moving look at the pain, confusion and frustration suffered by many First Nations people as they struggle for the most important right of all: the right to belong.

On the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake, located just outside the city of Montreal, Canada, there are two firm but unspoken rules drummed into every member of the community: Do not marry a white person and do not have a child with a white person. The potential consequences of ignoring these rules-loss of membership on the reserve, for yourself and your child-are clear, and for those who incur them, devastating. Break the rules, and you also risk being perceived as having betrayed the Mohawk Nation by diluting the "purity" of the bloodline.

In Club Native, filmmaker Tracey Deer uses Kahnawake, her hometown, as a lens to probe deeply into the history and contemporary reality of Aboriginal identity. Following the stories of four women, she reveals the exclusionary attitudes that divide the community and many others like it across Canada. Deer traces the roots of the problem, from the advent of the highly discriminatory Indian Act through the controversy of Bill C31, up to the present day, where membership on the reserve is determined by a council of Mohawk elders, whose rulings often appear inconsistent. And with her own home as a poignant case study, she raises a difficult question faced by people of many ethnicities across the world: What roles do bloodline and culture play in determining identity?
Tracey Deer, Director

Mohawk filmmaker Tracey Deer is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of Canada's finest chroniclers of modern Aboriginal life. She co-directed the feature-length documentary One More River (Rezolution Pictures) about the 2003 agreement between the Cree and Quebec. In 2004, she made Mohawk Girls (Rezolution Pictures/The National Film Board of Canada), a moving portrait of three teenage girls coming of age on her home reserve of Kahnawake, just outside of Montreal.

Tracey graduated in film studies at Dartmouth College in 2000 where she shot, directed and edited three short films before receiving the 25th Anniversary Film and Television Award for overall achievement in film studies. Her films have been broadcast and screened across Canada.

Cheap Room for Rent in Awesome St. Paul House

Spacious second-story room for rent, available any time between March 1st and May 1st (may consider later move-in date for Augsburg students). Room is in a 5-bedroom Merriam Park home, with high efficiency boiler/hot water, front-loading washing machine and dryer, new insulation, hardwood floors. Close to many neighborhood coffee shops, restaurants, and stores. Easy access to 21, 53, 84, and 144 bus lines. House shared by two Macalester students, one U of M alum, and one Augsburg student (three males and one female, ages 20-22). House has 2 fluffy cats (best for those with no allergies!); will consider other pets, though it may be tricky. Rent is $275/mo, usually comes to $325-350 after utilities. House is furnished, room is unfurnished, but a couch and bed are available. Room is sunny with street-facing windows, has a sizable closet. All housemates would like to meet those interested.

Commute to Cedar-Riverside is about 20-50 min by public transit, about 10 min by car. House is located on Selby Ave, between Snelling and Fairview.
