Book Request Due October 15

Effective in 2010, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) will require Augsburg to inform students about how they can save money on textbooks (including used books, cash back programs, etc.) Submitting your book orders promptly will help ensure our compliance to HEOA.
SUBMITTING TEXTBOOK REQUESTS
During registration, students must be able to access course information for fall. Registration begins in November, so it is imperative that we receive your Spring/Winter textbook adoption as soon as possible. Book request will be due in the store October 15th. We'll take your requests any way you want to deliver them! Choose the process that works best for you:
• Call 612-359-6492.
• E-mail sm592@bncollege.com or forgey@augsburg.edu
• Use our online system at www.augsburg.bncollege.com (click on the Faculty tab).
ONLINE REQUEST SYSTEM
This easy-to-use system gives you access to valuable information and timesaving features. You can learn what books were used over the past two years and select previously used textbooks just by checking a box, or you can enter information about a new book you want to use. You can also request additional supplies and materials needed for your course.
How to submit online requests through the bookstore website.
• Go to www.augsburg.bncollege.com
• Click on the Faculty tab at the top of the page.
• Log in or register if you haven't already.
• Follow Steps 1 through 5…..and you're done!
• After you complete this process, you will receive an e-mail confirmation that your textbook request was received.
WHY THE EARLY REQUESTS?
Faculty members are often surprised how early we begin asking for textbook requests for the coming term. We need to know what textbooks you plan to use for a number of reasons:
• To manage publisher or shipping delays that may arise. If we know what textbooks you want to use early on, you'll have time to review alternatives if your preferred titles aren't available.
• To get textbooks in the students' hands for the first day of class and to help them be prepared. By working together, we can make sure not a moment of instructional time is lost.
• To help save our students money! Early requests help us secure used copies of textbooks. Used textbooks offer students a lower-priced alternative—typically 25% less than a new textbook.
FACULTY CENTER NETWORK (FCN)
Are you considering a new book for the coming term? The FCN makes textbook selection faster and easier. This free online resource provides you with the information and tools you need to quickly research, select, and request your textbooks. You can view lists of other titles published in your discipline using various search and sort criteria, see how frequently and at which schools different textbooks are being used, read peer reviews, and preview textbooks.

Once you've identified which textbooks you want to learn more about, you can examine each book's cover and table of contents. Some textbooks have excerpts and summaries. The FCN also contains a link that you can use to request desk copies from publishers.
Ready to get started? Go to www.augsburg.bncollege.com and click on the Faculty tab. The Faculty Center Network access is located at the bottom of the Faculty page.

Designing Meaningful Learning Experiences

Monday, October 11, 7:30-9:00 am, Oren Gateway 100

The second session of our Foundational Series on Student Learning will explore how to design meaningful learning experiences. Bring a course syllabus or program outline to get the most out of this workshop. Using L. Dee Fink's integrated approach to design, we will explore the 5 critical questions involved in design, provide examples, and give you an opportunity to reexamine your course or program and apply key principles to improve its design. We will also examine Fink's model of significant learning experiences which can help you discover ways to make the activities you use more impactful or create new ones that facilitate deeper learning. This series is designed to address the basic needs faced by anyone who designs learning for our students and is looking for new ways to have a more significant impact.

All faculty and staff are welcome to participate. Coffee and pastries will be served. Thanks to all of you who attended the opening session; we hope to see you again.

Facilitators: Stu Anderson, Physics, and Velma Lashbrook, MAL.

RSVP to lashbroo@augsburg.edu

New Adult Tutor Program

A new Adult Tutoring Program will start at Augsburg next week. We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Please e-mail Adam Spanier at spaniera@augsburg.edu if interested in tutoring.

Hispanic Heritage Month: History and People

Hispanic Heritage Month
Sept. 15-Oct. 15

According to history, in 1850 there were 100,000 Hispanics among the 23 million residents of the United States. Today they are numbered in the millions, estimated at 46 million. To help understand the roots and origins of Hispanics or Latinos experts say, "The Hispanic heritage began as a synthesis of Celtic, Phoenician, Germanic, Greek, Roman and Arabic cultures and bloods; and became enriched by the bloods and cultures of African and indigenous Americans." History also tells us the Hispanic presence and bravery are well-known and have been demonstrated time and again, dating back to the aid rendered by General Galvez during the American Revolution and of Latino soldiers who served in World War II, Vietnam, Iraq and in other wars.

The Hispanic population with its presence and growth that began centuries ago continues with its demographic and economic shifts today. For example in 2007, the U.S. Population Bureau published "Hispanic Gains Minimize Population Losses in Rural and Small-Town America." These findings come as no surprise and confirm predictions. The report asserts that between the years 2000 and 2006 the total population in small towns and rural areas increased by 3 percent, but the Hispanic population in these counties grew 22 percent, from 2.6 million to 3.2 million.

Today many of them are creating new opportunities for employment, but the jobs tend to be low-wage positions in commercial agriculture, meatpacking, carpeting, and other manufacturing sectors that are more attractive to recent immigrants. As U.S. born workers seek job opportunities elsewhere, they are gradually replaced by foreign-born workers who are often willing to work for less money. The positive implications of this demographic shift in rural and small-town America is that the Hispanic population growth has helped revive communities by sustaining businesses and housing markets and by providing needed tax revenue. In 2009, U.S. Census Bureau estimated there are 740,000 people of Hispanic descent living in Minnesota.

Looking back through the 1850s, the tales of the American Revolution and of recent wars are living proof that Hispanics or Latinos have been part of America's rich history. Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month encompasses more than a language spoken; it includes the recognition of men and women and the acknowledgement of a beautiful mosaic of creation among all people. - Viva! - Long live America!

For more details contact the Hispanic/Latino Student Services or Emiliano at 330-1309 or chagil@augsburg.edu. - Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
