Book Adoptions for Winter/Spring due October 15

Effective in 2010, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) will require Augsburg to inform students about how they can save money on textbooks (including used books, cash back programs, etc.) Submitting your book orders promptly will help ensure our compliance to HEOA.
SUBMITTING TEXTBOOK REQUESTS
During registration, students must be able to access course information for fall. Registration begins in November, so it is imperative that we receive your Spring/Winter textbook adoption as soon as possible. Book request will be due in the store October 15th. We'll take your requests any way you want to deliver them! Choose the process that works best for you:
• Call 612-359-6492.
• E-mail sm592@bncollege.com or forgey@augsburg.edu
• Use our online system at www.augsburg.bncollege.com (click on the Faculty tab).
ONLINE REQUEST SYSTEM
This easy-to-use system gives you access to valuable information and timesaving features. You can learn what books were used over the past two years and select previously used textbooks just by checking a box, or you can enter information about a new book you want to use. You can also request additional supplies and materials needed for your course.
How to submit online requests through the bookstore website.
• Go to www.augsburg.bncollege.com
• Click on the Faculty tab at the top of the page.
• Log in or register if you haven't already.
• Follow Steps 1 through 5…..and you're done!
• After you complete this process, you will receive an e-mail confirmation that your textbook request was received.
WHY THE EARLY REQUESTS?
Faculty members are often surprised how early we begin asking for textbook requests for the coming term. We need to know what textbooks you plan to use for a number of reasons:
• To manage publisher or shipping delays that may arise. If we know what textbooks you want to use early on, you'll have time to review alternatives if your preferred titles aren't available.
• To get textbooks in the students' hands for the first day of class and to help them be prepared. By working together, we can make sure not a moment of instructional time is lost.
• To help save our students money! Early requests help us secure used copies of textbooks. Used textbooks offer students a lower-priced alternative—typically 25% less than a new textbook.
FACULTY CENTER NETWORK (FCN)
Are you considering a new book for the coming term? The FCN makes textbook selection faster and easier. This free online resource provides you with the information and tools you need to quickly research, select, and request your textbooks. You can view lists of other titles published in your discipline using various search and sort criteria, see how frequently and at which schools different textbooks are being used, read peer reviews, and preview textbooks.

Once you've identified which textbooks you want to learn more about, you can examine each book's cover and table of contents. Some textbooks have excerpts and summaries. The FCN also contains a link that you can use to request desk copies from publishers.
Ready to get started? Go to www.augsburg.bncollege.com and click on the Faculty tab. The Faculty Center Network access is located at the bottom of the Faculty page.

New Tutoring Opportunities

A new Adult Tutoring Program will start at Augsburg next week. We are currently looking for Augsburg students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Please e-mail Adam Spanier at spaniera@augsburg.edu if interested in tutoring.

Batalden Program Conversation and Update

Join Ruth Enestvedt and Joe Underhill for an informal discussion of the work of the Batalden Program as part of our regular "First Wednesday Gathering" in October. Ruth has served as the Batalden Faculty Scholar for the past two years and can give an overview of the work she did and Joe will be serving for the next two. Grab some food as part of the Community Lunch and join us in the Cedar Room from 11-12 on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The work of the Batalden program in the next two years will involve collaborative efforts in experiential education focused on projects that fall under the broad category of applied ethics. Students, staff, faculty, and community groups are invited to join in discussion and implementation of projects that promote peace and justice, reduce our over-all ecological footprint and strengthen our ties with local community groups. These projects involve students doing applied research in support of projects such as clean energy, water management, community-building, fair trade, alternative transportation, and peace and justice initiatives. Funds are available to support this work in various ways, including student research assistantships.

Contact Prof. Underhill if you have other questions or ideas for projects at underhill@augsburg.edu.

Designing Meaningful Learning Experiences

Monday, October 11, 7:30-9:00 am, Oren Gateway 100

The second session of our Foundational Series on Student Learning will explore how to design meaningful learning experiences. Bring a course syllabus or program outline to get the most out of this workshop. Using L. Dee Fink's integrated approach to design, we will explore the 5 critical questions involved in design, provide examples, and give you an opportunity to reexamine your course or program and apply key principles to improve its design. We will also examine Fink's model of significant learning experiences which can help you discover ways to make the activities you use more impactful or create new ones that facilitate deeper learning. This series is designed to address the basic needs faced by anyone who designs learning for our students and is looking for new ways to have a more significant impact.

All faculty and staff are welcome to participate. Coffee and pastries will be served. Thanks to all of you who attended the opening session; we hope to see you again.

Facilitators: Stu Anderson, Physics, and Velma Lashbrook, MAL. Please rsvp to lashbroo@augsburg.edu

H1N1 Update - www.augsburg.edu/H1N1

Flu experts both in Minnesota and nationally do not believe that this fall and winter will feature the same kind of major influenza outbreak that we saw a year ago.

The World Health Organization has officially declared an end to the H1N1 pandemic and far fewer people are becoming ill from it. That said, the virus is still circulating and Augsburg students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to continue practicing the health safety habits that became commonplace a year ago.

Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Don't share things like cups, glasses or water bottles. Use the hand sanitizing stations that continue to be stocked on campus.

And, most importantly, get a flu shot.

Augsburg has set up opportunities for students, faculty and staff members to get flu shots without having to leave campus.
FOR STUDENTS
DATE: Monday, Oct. 18, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Christensen Center Century Room.
COST: Students who bring their insurance card will receive the flu shot without an out of pocket expense. Students without an insurance card can receive a flu shot for $25 (similar in price to the cost of a flu shot at Target, Walgreens or CVS).

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
CLINIC #1
DATE: Friday, Nov. 5, 8 a.m.-Noon, Lindell Library 202

CLINIC #2
DATE: Tuesday, Nov. 9, Noon-2:30 p.m., Lindell Library 202

COST: Employees need to bring their insurance card to receive the flu shot without an out of pocket expense. Augsburg WILL NOT pay for the flu shot this year. Employees can also receive a flu shot for $25 (similar in price to the cost of a flu shot at Target, Walgreens or CVS).

Auggie Athletics

Bowman Named MIAC Athlete of Week

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/9/28/msoc092810a.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second time this season, an Augsburg College men's soccer player has earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors, as midfielder Matt Bowman (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) earned the honor this week, it was announced on Tuesday.

Bowman played a crucial role in Augsburg's two victories during the past week -- a 4-0 nonconference win over Northwestern-Roseville on Monday and a 1-0, two-overtime win over nationally-ranked Macalester on Saturday. Against the Eagles, Bowman assisted on the Auggies' first goal, a tally just 37 seconds into the game, and had four shots in the game, including three shots-on-goal.

Against the Scots, at the time ranked No. 15 nationally, Bowman was called upon to take a penalty kick 2:27 into the second overtime, and his conversion gave the Auggies the victory and extended his point-scoring streak to three straight games. He has a goal or assist in five of Augsburg's nine games this year.

Bowman has had a dramatic career at Augsburg, recovering from a near-fatal incident in 2008 to being a reliable starter the past two years. During a preseason scrimmage in August 2008, Bowman collapsed on the field and nearly died, and he was diagnosed with a form of anomalous coronary artery heart defect -- a very rare condition that usually kills 80 percent of its victims before it is diagnosed. In layman's terms, one of Bowman's arteries was located in the wrong place since his birth. Bowman was forced to have a difficult open-heart surgery at the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital on Sept. 12, 2008, to correct the ailment, and missed the entire 2008 season.

But he returned to the Auggie lineup in 2009, starting 14 of 17 games and playing in 975 of the team's 1,573 minutes (62 percent), with a goal and three assists for five points. So far this season, Bowman has appeared in all nine games, starting seven, while playing 401 of the team's 822 minutes (49 percent). He stands third on the team in overall scoring this season, with a goal and team-high-tying four assists for six points.

Augsburg is now 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0, and is now ranked No. 23 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll and No. 3 in the NSCAA's North Region poll. The Auggies host St. Olaf on Wednesday (9/29) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.

Auggie Men's Soccer in National Rankings

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/9/28/msoc092810.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's soccer team moved into the national rankings for the first time this season, ranked No. 23 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll, released on Tuesday. The Auggies also moved up one spot in the NSCAA Division III North Region poll to the No. 3 position.

The national ranking is the first for Augsburg since the opening weeks of the 2009 campaign. The No. 3 regional ranking is the highest for Augsburg since the team was ranked No. 2 in the North Region in the second and third polls of the 2009 season (Sept. 15-22).

Augsburg moved into the national rankings after a strong week which included two shutout victories -- a 4-0 nonconference win over Northwestern-Roseville last Monday and a 1-0, two-overtime victory over then-No. 15-ranked Macalester in conference play on Saturday. All seven of Augsburg's victories, including the last three games, have come by shutout, and Augsburg currently has a 341:12 shutout streak over its last four games.

Augsburg is the lone Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school in this week's NSCAA national poll and the highest ranked of the three MIAC schools in the North Region poll; Macalester is now ranked No. 5 and Carleton is ranked No. 9.

Augsburg is in the "Others Receiving Votes" category in the latest D3Soccer.com Top 25 national poll, released on Sunday.

Now 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in MIAC play, the Auggies have a home contest against St. Olaf on Wednesday (9/29) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
