Call for Proposals: Saturday Seminars

General Announcements

McNair Welcomes Back Xia Xiong Vang

The McNair Scholars Program proudly welcomes Xia Xiong Vang, Augsburg and McNair alumnus, back to campus as the Assistant Director of the McNair Scholars Program.

Xia graduated from Augsburg in May 2005 with a major in sociology and a minor in communications. She is also a product of Augsburg’s Scholastic Connections program.

In May 2007, Xia earned a Master’s in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology at the University of Minnesota, where she had previously carried out research as an undergrad. While earning her Master’s at the U of M, Xia served as an Academic/Career Counselor in the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence and as a translator for the TRIO/Upward Program. Even more fitting, she served as the Assistant Coordinator of the Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program, a program similar in design and mission to the McNair Scholars Program.

Xia’s main job responsibility at the present time is to recruit a cohort of 25 McNair Scholars. Expect to receive literature and visits from her.

It’s particularly gratifying to have one of our own McNair graduates back on campus, uncovering, developing and inspiring a new cohort of McNair Scholars.

Welcome back, Xia.

CCHP Health Fair - Thank You

To the many students, faculty and staff who enjoyed the free food, free chair massages, great student musicians and the many health vendors who joined us at the health fair: we thank you for coming.

A special thanks to student musicians Sara Horishnyk, Matt Huot, Joe Green and Bri'Ann Wright for their wonderful jazz music. Also many thanks to event services staff for their ability to move the fair inside so quickly due to the cooler, windy temps outside and finally thanks to Sodexho for providing good, warm, nourishing food for the fair. The chili and corn bread muffins were a real hit.

Thirty-one students, faculty or staff won great prizes from Pizza Luce, The Southern Theatre, Seward Co-Op, Noodles & Co., Davanni's, the Augsburg Bookstore, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UNUM, The Brehm Group, and Midwest Moutaineering -- thank you, donors.

Poster Contest

In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, the CLASS office is sponsoring a poster contest. We have the posters, and you provide the artwork.

Requirements are that the artwork promote awareness of disabilities on campus in a positive and collegial format, and include a slogan or phrase that you believe best conveys understanding and acceptance for each individual's unique contributions.

First Prize is a $50 gift certificate, Second Prize is a $25 gift certificate, and Third Prize is a $15 gift certificate. There will be choices available as to where the gift certificates can be redeemed.

If you are interested in submitting an entry for consideration, please pick up a blank poster board in the CLASS office (Foss 17A). All entries must be submitted to us by Friday, Oct. 26 before 5 p.m. All posters created will be displayed in the Christensen Center coffee shop, and the top three entries will be framed and displayed in the CLASS office after October.

Ultimate Tryouts (Spring Team)

*Ultimate tryouts will be held this Sunday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. (please arrive 15 minutes early) on Edor Nelson Field and Friday, Oct. 19 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the same location. Tryouts are meant to determine the team(s) that will represent Augsburg College in a booming sport. Potential players are required to make only one of these dates. If these days do not work, please let me, Justin or Al know ASAP, so we can determine if we need another day of tryouts or something else.

Tryouts will be based on seven core skills of an ultimate player. These include endurance, throwing, catching, defense, offense, overall game-play and teamwork. To test these strengths, there will be several drills and exercises, including a 1-mile run with a target time between 6 and 7.5 minutes. Throwing will include forehand and backhand, nothing else. On the day of tryouts, please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt (people with gray shirts will be punished), a disc (if you have one, put your name on it), cleats (if you don't have cleats, wear flats; barefoot is not acceptable), water, and arrive 15 minutes early, as we will start on time.

*During all tryouts, we will be using UPA Rules

*Every day at 4 p.m., starting Tuesday, Oct. 8 and going to Friday, Oct.12, there will be optional captains' practices in Murphy Park for help with throws and catches and anything else you would like help with (if no one is there after 4:10 p.m., the captains will leave).
