Security and Facilities Announcements

Fire Safety Week

• Cooking related fires are one of the leading causes of fires in the United States and the leading cause of fire-related injuries. Just think about it: people cook every day, sometimes two or three times in one day. Cooking safety is a hot topic.

• Careless smoking causes the most fire related deaths and they usually occur between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., the time when people sleep and a fire can go unnoticed.

• Extension cords should only be used for a limited time and never with an electric appliance such as space heaters, refrigerators, freezers or other appliances with large motors.

Teaching and Learning

Honors Research Projects Now Funded

The URGO Advisory Committee has reversed its earlier decision not to fund honors project research. We considered some strong arguments from faculty that research is research, and URGO and the College are about supporting research whether it is or is not part of an honors project. Our aim is to support students doing research by allowing them to trim their other work commitments.

I thank all the faculty for their thoughtful and impassioned feedback. As always, we try to "rule" in favor of the students.

NOTE: The current application for requesting research funds at URGO's web site has not been changed to reflect this reversal. Until we get a new one up, just ignore the part that says Honors Projects can't be funded. We'll gladly accept the old form until a new one is posted.

Dixie

General Announcements

Disability Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is a comprehensive civil rights act for people with disabilities. On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA into law as wide-ranging legislation intended to make American society more accessible to people with disabilities and to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. The act is divided into five titles:

1. Employment. Businesses must provide reasonable accommodations in all aspects of employment to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.
2. Public services. People with disabilities cannot be denied participation in public service programs or activities that are available to people without disabilities.
3. Public accommodations. All new construction must be accessible to individuals with disabilities.
4. Telecommunications. Telecommunication companies must have a telephone relay service for individuals who use telecommunications devices for the deaf (TTYs) or similar devices.
5. Miscellaneous. This title includes a provision prohibiting coercing, threatening, or retaliating against individuals with disabilities or those assisting them in asserting their rights under the ADA.
The protection of the ADA applies primarily, but not exclusively, to individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Jane Fonda Movie Night at Augsburg House

Jane Fonda is coming to speak on campus – wouldn't you like to see some of her movies? Join us for popcorn, movies, and discussion, hosted by Abigail Crampton Pribbenow at Augsburg House, 2848 West River Parkway.

Wednesday, Oct. 17: "Georgia Rule" (with Lindsay Lohan)

From the Internet Movie Database:

Rebellious teenager Rachel screams, swears, drinks and is - in a word - uncontrollable. With her latest car crash, Rachel has broken the final rule in mom Lily's San Francisco home. With nowhere else to take the impulsive and rambunctious girl, Lily hauls her daughter to the one place she swore she'd never return...her own mother's Idaho farm. Matriarch Georgia is not your typical sweet and doting grandmother. She lives her life by a number of unbreakable rules, demanding anyone who shares her home do the same - God comes first and hard work comes a very close second. Now saddled with raising the young woman, it will require each patient breath she takes to understand Rachel's fury. But as Rachel succumbs to her summer of misery and shakes up the tiny Mormon town, Georgia notices something is changing within her granddaughter. Given structure and responsibilities, Rachel is letting her guard down and learning compassion...especially for her mother. Her journey will lead all three women to revelations of buried family secrets and an understanding that - regardless of what happens - the ties that bind can never be broken.

Wednesday, Oct. 24: "Julia" (with Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep)

Wednesday, Nov. 7: "9 to 5" (with Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton)

The show starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by discussion. Campus Security can escort you to the house if you need a ride. Call x1717 to make arrangements.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Friday's Fun Engagement Student Spotlight

Each Friday this year, the Center for Service, Work, and Learning will feature an interesting story of student engagement in the community through internships, service-learning, volunteerism, jobs, or activism.

For this inaugural entry, we'd like to feature Christopher Stedman.

You may know a thing or two about Chris, but what you may not know about this senior religion major is his penchant for penning a solid and interesting piece of journalism. He cut his teeth at the Echo, among other places, but is now extending his talents into the community through an internship with The Bridge, a local community paper serving the South Minneapolis neighborhoods bordering the river.

In Chris's first issue on the job, he landed two feature stories in print. You can read one of them here: http://www.readthebridge.info/node/2282

We have no doubt that Chris will continue to inform and entertain us with his witty muckraking. Keep an eye out for his next story!

Stay tuned next week for another student spotlight from the CSWL!

Ultimate Tryouts (Spring Team)

*Ultimate tryouts will be held this Sunday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. (please arrive 15 minutes early) on Edor Nelson Field and Friday, Oct. 19 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the same location. Tryouts are meant to determine the team(s) that will represent Augsburg College in a booming sport. Potential players are required to make only one of these dates. If these days do not work, please let me, Justin or Al know ASAP, so we can determine if we need another day of tryouts or something else.

Tryouts will be based on seven core skills of an ultimate player. These include endurance, throwing, catching, defense, offense, overall game-play and teamwork. To test these strengths, there will be several drills and exercises, including a 1-mile run with a target time between 6 and 7.5 minutes. Throwing will include forehand and backhand, nothing else. On the day of tryouts, please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt (people with gray shirts will be punished), a disc (if you have one, put your name on it), cleats (if you don't have cleats, wear flats; barefoot is not acceptable), water, and arrive 15 minutes early, as we will start on time.

*During all tryouts, we will be using UPA Rules

*Every day at 4 p.m., starting Tuesday, Oct. 8 and going to Friday, Oct.12, there will be optional captains' practices in Murphy Park for help with throws and catches and anything else you would like help with (if no one is there after 4:10 p.m., the captains will leave).

Adamson Receives Football Honors

Augsburg's Garrett Adamson was named MIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week, D3Football.com Team of the Week

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/101107adamson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (Oct. 11, 2007) -- Augsburg College free safety Garrett Adamson (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week, and was also named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week for his accomplishments in the Auggies' 14-13 nonconference win at No. 10/11 Wartburg (Iowa) on Saturday, it was announced this week.

Adamson led the Auggies with 17 tackles (nine solo), including 0.5 tackles for loss, and had the game-clinching interception at the Augsburg 1-yard line with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter, as Augsburg claimed the upset victory at Wartburg. The interception was Adamson's third of the season. Adamson now is tied for the team's lead in tackles with 47 (29 solo).

The D3Football.com Team of the Week recognizes the outstanding performances from throughout the country in NCAA Division III football. The Team of the Week is selected by D3Football.com staff and contributors from players nominated by sports information directors, coaches and conference offices.

Saturday's victory was Augsburg's first over a nationally ranked team since a 34-22 win in the NCAA Division III national playoffs over Concordia-Moorhead (No. 21) at the Fargodome on Nov. 21, 1997. Augsburg was ranked No. 14 nationally at the time. Augsburg had lost its last 16 games to nationally-ranked teams before Saturday's win.

The Auggies, now 2-3 on the season and 0-3 in MIAC play, host St. Thomas (1-4 overall, 1-2 MIAC) in Augsburg's Homecoming game on Saturday (Oct. 13) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.
