Electric Bass Lessons at Augsburg

Those wishing to enroll in electric bass lessons at Augsburg College are encouraged to contact Christian McGuire at mcguire@augsburg.edu

-----------------------------------------

K. Christian McGuire is a St. Paul-based instructor, composer, performer, author, and musicologist. He holds an MA in Music from the University of Minnesota and a BA in Philosophy, minoring in Latin & Ancient Greek, from Luther College (1992).

His diverse research interests include: 12th Century liturgical practice, theory, and notation of Northern Germany and the Low Countries (specializing in the music of Hildegard von Bingen); Mozart Opera; History, Performance, and Orchestral Timbres of the Electric Bass; and Late 1960s/early 1970s Heavy Blues and Progressive Rock.

An electric bassist since 1983, he performs in a variety of settings: big bands, jazz ensembles, bluegrass, rock groups, musical theatre pits, and many studio sessions. His primary interest for the instrument is expanding its repertoire by exploiting its idioms as a serious addition to orchestration.

As a baritone/tenor vocalist, he has been coached by Harriet McCleary, Helen Houden, and Caryl Becker and performs both solo (with a preference for the works of Webern and Debussy) and with large choral ensembles including active membership with the Minnesota Chorale.

Since 2004, he has served the Minnesota Music Listening Contest board as musicologist, authoring the 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2007-08 study guides, as well as compiling and editing the guide for 2006-07.

He is an adjunct faculty member at both Augsburg College in Minneapolis and the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul.

Looking for a Volunteer Opportunity?

The East African Women's Center, located in the Cedar-Riverside Towers, is looking for a couple of people to volunteer on Fridays from 9 a.m. - noon.

On Fridays, there is a women's group that meets in the Towers, and they need volunteers to watch the kids while the women are in the other room. These are young, Somali kids not yet in school.

Volunteer for the whole time or part of the time. This is a great opportunity to get out into our neighborhood and to interact with little kids!

Please contact me if you are interested.

Disability Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states that:

No otherwise qualified person with a disability in the United States…shall, solely by reason of…disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

Who is Protected Under the Law?

A “person with a disability” is “any person who (i) has a physical or mental impairment, which substantially limits one or more of such person’s major life activities; (ii) has a record of such an impairment; or (iii) is regarded as having such an impairment.”
