Augsburg College

These awards recognize exemplary work by faculty and staff in support of teaching and learning at Augsburg College. Up to three awards are available annually. They are in the areas of teaching, advising/mentoring, and service to students/other direct contributions to teaching and learning. Each award carries a stipend of $1000, public recognition and celebration.

Awards are based on evidence of student learning and student satisfaction provided by students, colleagues, and documentation, weighted appropriately for each of the three areas of excellence. The selection process is as follows:

• The deadline for nominations is Friday February 23, 2007. Nominations should be sent to Terry Martin as an e-mail attachment martin@augsburg.edu or campus box 97.
Questions can be directed to Diane Pike at pike@augsburg.edu

• Nomination forms consist of a one-page letter identifying the nominee and providing a 1-2 paragraph rationale for the nomination; in addition, nominators are asked to submit 2-4 names of students and/or colleagues who can speak to nominee’s work.

• The Selection Panel conduct confidential interviews with members of the community, review information and make awards no later than March 26h. Awardees will be acknowledged at the Honors Convocation and at other events.

The Selection Panel includes: the Dean of the College, the Dean of Adult and Graduate Programs, the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), one student, and at least one staff member. This is a juried process.

The criteria for the awards are:

Teaching
Demonstrated and sustained excellence through the:
• Strength and quality of student support,
• Collection and review of syllabi, course materials and grading patterns reflecting best practices,
• Command over material, both content and pedagogy as supported by department chair and colleagues.
Mentor/Advising
Demonstrated and sustained excellence through the:
• Sustained conversation about and attention to vocation, career and student success overall.
• Guiding of students through the processes leading to successful and timely graduation and student recognition of the attention and care provided by the nominee
Service to Students/Other Direct Contributions to Teaching and Learning
Demonstrated and sustained excellence through:
• Work that contributes to students’ academic development, growth and success
• Contributions to a positive, academic campus environment in a direct way

Message: Due to scheduling overlaps, the classroom for Professor Jhang Jie's sessions has been relocated to Sverdrup 202.

If you are interested in learning conversational Chinese or more about Chinese culture, we hope you will join us TODAY in Sverdrup 202. Visiting professor Zhang Jie (John), Professor of English and Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Anqing Teachers College will be offering sessions for students, faculty, and staff (non-Augsburg guests are also welcome) beginning TODAY, Wednesday, Feb. 21.

There are ten sessions planned and intended to be informal and interactive. No registration is necessary, nor is there a requirement to attend every session. Please invite your colleagues and friends to come learn more about China and experience John's enthusiasm for teaching Chinese and Chinese culture.

Message: The Colorful History & Culture of Guatemala

Explore the beautiful Guatemalan history and culture through images, stories, and textiles. In January, WEC senior Boyd Savage and Augsburg staff member Wendi Wheeler spent eight days in Guatemala with a group of students led by professor Elise Marubbio of the American Indian Studies, Women's Studies, and English departments and Fidel Xinico, the program coordinator with the Center for Global Education. Wendi will share highlights of their experience, and Boyd will show some of the marvelous textiles he acquired on the trip.

Guatemalan-inspired refreshments will be served at 3:30 in Lindell 301. The presentation begins at 4:00 p.m.

Africa, home to some of the earliest Christians, has become in recent
years the population center of world Christianity. As Europeans have
been abandoning Christian faith, Africans have be adopting and adapting the tradition. What are the future growth projections for Christianity in Africa and in the West? What sorts of Christianity will be most numerous and most powerful in the rest of our century? This illustrated lecture, based on Dr. Holt's experience of living almost a decade in Africa, his reading, and his recent visit to Nigeria will provide the grist for our discussion of what is on the horizon.

Message: The Glenn Miller Scholarship is for first year college students planning to make music a central part of their future. Awards up to $3000 are available to instrumentalists and vocalists. Due March 15th.

The Anna M Kuhl Scholarship for residents of St. Paul or nearby communities is an award based on character and integrity, academic performance, and financial need. Students must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program. Due March 30.

The American Heart Association's Helen N & Harold B Shapira Heart Undergraduate Scholarship is a $1000 award for undergraduate students from Minnesota working in a medically related curriculum with potential application to patients with diseases of the heart and blood vessel system. Due April 1.

The AICPA John L Carey Scholarship is for students wishing to pursue graduate accounting study. Scholarships are available to liberal arts degree holders who wish to pursue a CPA certificate. Awards up to $5000 are possible. Due April 1.

The North Suburban Communications Commission is offering scholarships to students from Arden Hills, Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Little Canada, Moundsview, New Brighton, North Oaks, Roseville, St. Anthony, or Shoreview. Applicants whose primary field of study is Mass Communications, Journalism, Television Production, or a similar course of study will be given priority. Due April 13.

The Twin Cities Single Lutheran Adults organization is offering a scholarship award to a seven county metro area college student enrolled in a Lutheran college. The $600 scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior college student for the 07-08 academic year. Due April 17.

The John Gyles Education Awards are available to students in all areas of post secondary study. A minimum GPA of 2.7 is required. Applications are available online at www.johngyleseducationcenter.com and are due June 1st.

Subject: Help the Pedalers For Peace bike to New Orleans

Message: The Pedalers For Peace, a group of Auggie students and staff, are attempting to bike from Jackson, MS to New Orleans, LA during Spring Break. This is to raise awareness about alternative forms of transportation that will help to free our country from its dependence on fossil fuels.

To be successful each biker must carry their camping gear, food, and clothing on their bike, and we're looking to the Augsburg community to see if anyone has any touring racks and panniers OR Bike Trailers/Strollers you'd be willing to loan us for the week of March 17--25.

We pledge to take impeccably good care of these loaned items, and will return them to you upon our arrival back in Minneapolis. Please help us to put the finishing touches on our trip!!
