Teaching and Learning from Insurgent Democracy: From Diversity and Inclusion to Equity and Empowerment

Faculty, on October 5th CTL and the CCV are co-hosting a special event featuring Michael Lansing, Associate Professor of History. At this event, Michael will share how writing his book Insurgent Democracy pushed him to reconsider classroom strategies for equity and empowerment. He poses the question, what would it mean for Augsburg to be a "democracy college"? Creating equal chances for students from disadvantaged communities and backgrounds is the most difficult task we face. Empowerment -- through the teaching of basic democratic skills that lead to co-creation -- might be one way to address them in our teaching and learning.

New Faculty E-Learning Development Opportunity

Augsburg's Center for Teaching and Learning, in cooperation with the E-Learning Team, is offering a unique opportunity for new faculty members to participate in an EdTech Cohort.

The six-week cohort will be composed of three 90-minute face-to-face sessions (3:30-5:00 p.m. on 10/20, 11/3, and 11/17) with online activities scheduled during the intervening weeks. The goal is to familiarize new faculty with strategies for integrating Moodle and other available learning technologies with their individual teaching approach. Activities will encourage participants to incorporate new strategies into their teaching preparation to avoid significantly increasing their workload.

A stipend of $200 will be awarded upon successful completion of the cohort. Any new full-time (tenure track or continuing special appointments) faculty who have joined Augsburg in the last two years are eligible to join the cohort. Email Mara at ctl@augsburg.edu ASAP to sign up!

Civic Studies Fellows - Apply Now

Civic Studies Fellows will be a group of 6 Augsburg faculty and staff and 3 community members who commit to engaging in civic studies and action for the duration of the academic year. The Civic Studies Fellows will work strategically so they can co create with others to positively impact the Augsburg community, our partnerships, and the larger landscape of civic engagement in higher education. They will strategize about Augsburg's potential to be "Big to the World" by taking leadership in the field.

Being a Civic Studies Fellow involves commitment to the following:

- Monthly meetings to learn the literature of civic studies, the larger context (for instance, the Obama Foundation to be located in Chicago is using Civic Studies as its focus, with potential to powerfully impact the civic engagement landscape), and strategize how integrate Civic Studies themes into curricular and co-curricular life. Meetings will explore various topics including the history, theory and practices of Civic Studies, and strategy. In these monthly meetings we will discuss some shared readings and learn some organizing strategies.
- Be part of a work group that comes out of this work to identify an issue having to do with institutional and or cultural change at Augsburg. That work group will meet as a small group to engage around the issue that group members identify.

These amount to two core commitments:

- To become familiar with core texts of Civic Studies and engage in discussions with the other fellows about the readings and their strategic implications.
- To be part of an action team of fellows that are working on an issue at Augsburg.

Fellows will receive a professional development stipend of $700 for Augsburg Civic Studies Fellows and $1000 for community fellows.

2016-2017 Torstenson Community Scholars Selected

The Department of Sociology is excited to announce that Emily Campbell, Jennifer Kochaver, Ellen Sachs and Mark Daniels have been selected as 2016-2017 Torstenson Community Scholars. The scholars will spend the year researching the impact of oil exploration on residents of northwestern North Dakota. Their work will include a spring research trip to the area to conduct interviews with local residents.

The Torstenson Scholars program has been made possible through the generosity of Mark Johnson, a 1975 Metro-Urban Studies graduate of Augsburg College. Mr. Johnson's gift and the formation of the community scholars program are in memory of Professor Joel Torstenson '38, who was instrumental in founding Augsburg's Department of Sociology.

Faculty and Staff Training: Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring

The Provost's Office, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Committee, and Human Resources are partnering to offer a training session for faculty and staff on Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring which will be held on Tuesday, October 11 in OGC 100, from 9:00 a.m. - noon.

The training will include a video and discussion facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson of Language and Culture Worldwide. We will be discussing unconscious bias and it's impact on the hiring and selection process and strategies we can use to de-bias situations.
