May 4 Program for Faculty Who Teach Graduate Courses

The Grad Council has been discussing ways to engage the campus more generally in conversations around graduate teaching and program support. The current campus conversations around the university question have contributed to our discussion. In December, there was a joint meeting of the Grad Council and the GAAC to talk about common issues. At that meeting both groups expressed support for more activities that would bring all faculty members who teach graduate courses together for further work that advances our programs.

Toward that end, on May 4 there will be a graduate faculty workshop in the Marshall Room. The day will start about 9 a.m. and will go through lunch -- finishing about 1 p.m. There will be another email to follow that has more details regarding the topics and agenda, but for now, we are asking faculty from all graduate programs to mark their calendars and plan to join us that day.

Flag Bearers Needed $$$

Commencement 2016 is right around the corner, and we're looking for current students that would be able to assist as a flag bearer for each ceremony. This year's ceremonies are both on Saturday, April 30:

Day Undergraduate Ceremony Begins at 10:00am
Flag Bearers Needed from 9:15am-10:15am (Total Needed = 25)

AU/Graduate Program Ceremony Begins at 4:00pm
Flag Bearers Needed from 3:15pm-4:15pm (Total Needed =17)

Each student that carries a flag will receive $20 cash/ceremony.

Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, is permitted in designated outside areas only.

There are 9 designated areas:
1. Plaza area outside of the Ice Arena.
2. Designated area in front of Si Melby.
3. Bench area outside of the music building.
4. North side of walkway entrance to Foss.
5. Oren Gateway entry near Lot H.
6. 7th Street side of Lindell Library.
7. Quad: patio area near Christensen.
8. Bench area between Anderson and Luther halls.
9. Urness/Mortensen near motorcycle parking.

Rose Ensemble Performance This Sunday

On Sunday, April 24, the Rose Ensemble will visit Augsburg for the final stop on their Land of Three Faiths tour.

The result of years of intensive research and training, "Land of Three Faiths" is at once sacred, secular, folk, and classical, embarking on a fascinating exploration of language, spirituality, and cultural exchange. Featuring instruments and musical ideas that blur the lines between Arabic and European, this entertaining and enlightening program is steeped in the rich history of the Abrahamic faiths, achieving a perfect balance of edgy improvisation, exotic vocal styles, and ancient traditions.

Minnesota Undergraduate Psychology Conference 4/23

Please join us! The Psychology Department is hosting the 51st annual Minnesota Undergraduate Psychology Conference (MUPC) on Saturday, April 23rd from 8:00am - 3:30pm. Approximately 330 psychology majors and 75 faculty members from Minnesota and surrounding states will be in attendance. The conference includes a series of student research paper and poster sessions, a psychology graduate school and job fair from 9:00am - 1:00pm in OGC100, and a keynote address from distinguished eyewitness memory researcher, Dr. Gary Wells, in the Chapel from 10:45am - 12:00pm. Hmong American Day - May 14, 2016

May 14th, 2016 marks the 41st Anniversary of the Hmong people's journey out of Laos to America. As the Vietnam War and Secret War in Laos came to an end with the retreat of American forces, the late General Vang Pao courageously launched the Hmong American Diaspora by leading the Hmong out of Laos to pursue a new life in the US.

Hmong American Day is FREE and open to the public!

Theater: A Sacred Passage this weekend

Three Augsburg theater alums (Stephanie Lein Walseth, Quinci Bachman, and Jorge Rodriguez) & Professor Emerita Martha Johnson are part of the Full Circle Theater Company's return engagement of "Theater: A Sacred Passage" for three performances only at Dreamland Arts in St. Paul this coming weekend. Stephanie and Martha are two writers of this original performance piece, devised by the five core artists of Full Circle from their personal journeys into theater. This production was selected as one of the "Best of the Week" in Sunday's Star Tribune.

Other writers are James Williams, Rick Shiomi, and Lara Trujillo. Their stories embody the challenges and transformational experiences they have had in becoming theater artists and how their lives and work reflect the huge changes in our theater community over the past two decades.

The piece incorporates acting, storytelling, choreography and music. Quinci Bachman is production coordinator, stage manager, and sound designer. Jorge Rodriguez is set and technical director and lighting designer. Martha Johnson is dramaturg and assistant director. Andrea Dvorak - Special Thanks from US State Dept

Andrea Dvorak received special thanks from the US Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs for her recent service on the Gilman International Scholarship review panel, which reviewed over 3,400 applications from US undergraduate students who will study abroad this summer and fall.

The Gilman International Scholarship, funded by the US Congress, is aimed at providing underrepresented students (e.g, students of color, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students) with financial need access to study abroad opportunities.

Over 40 Auggies have Gilman awards in the last 8 years totaling $180,000.
