Oscar Romero Celebration in Chapel this Wed.

This Wednesday, all are invited to Chapel to commemorate the life and legacy of Archbishop Oscar Romero. The service is at 10:20am. Who is he?
Archbishop Oscar Romero
In 1980, in El Salvador (Central America) the soon-to-be-assassinated Archbishop Oscar Romero promised history that life, not death, would have the last word. "I do not believe in death without resurrection," he said. "If they kill me, I will be resurrected in the Salvadoran people."

Oscar Romero gave his last homily on March 24. Reflecting on scripture, he said, "One must not love oneself so much, as to avoid getting involved in the risks of life that history demands of us, and those that fend off danger will lose their lives." He begged for international intervention. He was alone. The people were alone. In 1980 the war claimed the lives of 3,000 per month, with cadavers clogging the streams, and tortured bodies thrown in garbage dumps and the streets of San Salvador weekly.

On each anniversary of his death, the people march through the streets carrying that promise printed on thousands of banners. Mothers will make pupusas (thick tortillas with beans) at 5 a.m., pack them, and prepare the children for a two-to-four hour ride or walk to the city to remember the gentle man they called Monseñor.

The importance of Monseñor Romero in today's El Salvador is indisputable. The more than three decades since his martyrdom have not in any way diminished his image, but rather underlined his living presence. Archbishop Romero is a key reference point of national and ecclesiastic life, even for those who reject him, since they cannot but recognize his importance for the country and the world. In a society disfigured by violence, massive emigration, inequality and poverty, and the social and political irresponsibility of its leaders, Oscar Romero is still a hugely significant figure today.

Join the Million Hoodie March for Trayvon

Throw on your hoodies (or whatever) and come gather to show your support for justice for Trayvon Martin!

Let's make a choice to stand up for Trayvon Martin. 17 years old innocent black male, that was murdered for walking down the street with a bag of skittles and a bottle of ice tea in his hands. "Suspicious." is what Zimmerman said as to why he killed him (not yet arrested) all because he had on a black hoodie.

A black person, or any person in a hoodie/sweatshirt should not automatically be considered "suspicious". Let's put an end to racial profiling!

We're going to be gathering at Northrop Plaza (84 Church Street SE) at 6 PM. Bring a sign or anything if possible.Lets show off our Auggie support.
