Teaching and Learning

Inter-Religious Dialog - MONDAY

Join the Inter-Religious Dialog group as we hear from a group of Jewish and Muslim women who decided to create their own form of Inter-Religious Dialog, through a monthly potluck. In their own quiet way, these women are doing incredibly progressive work, reaching out to "the other" in order to deepen their understanding about the religious world around them. We will hear from women about why they started this group, what they have learned from other religions, and what has resulted from their meetings.

We will meet in the Century Room of the Christensen Center at 7 p.m. on Nov 24. Come prepared to engage in many questions!

Professor Wanyama's course counts as a Humanities LAF and as a gateway course to upper-level coursework in English. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:40-11:10. For more information, contact Doug Green, English Department Chair <green@augsburg.edu, x1187>.

Brian Krohn to Interview for Rhodes Scholarship

Augsburg chemistry major Brian Krohn will interview this weekend for a Rhodes Scholarship and a chance to study at the prestigious Oxford University in England. Krohn has had a great deal of academic and extracurricular success here at Augsburg; most notably, becoming known regionally and nationally for his participation in the revolutionary McGyan process development with Augsburg faculty member Arlin Gyberg and in connection with SarTec industries. Faculty members have been prepping the potential scholar in the past weeks through mock interview sessions, and Brian has put in a great deal of hard work and preparation for this potential opportunity, as well. If he receives the scholarship, he will be studying Environmental Change and Management at Oxford.

We wish Brian the best of luck this weekend, and hope that he successfully achieves this accolade and study opportunity of a lifetime.

Staff Handbook Update

Human Resources is pleased to announce the updated 2008 Augsburg College Staff Handbook is available for your review and ongoing reference. We hope you find the updated Staff Handbook easier to use when looking for specific policies; it will be easier to keep updated as certain items change or are added, and it incorporates all employment related policies since 2003. Please note: while the Staff Handbook applies primarily to Staff employees, where all College employees are affected, the language specifically references "employees" whereas Staff are referred to as staff or staff members.

For your reference, you can link to the 2008 Staff Handbook at http://web.augsburg.edu/hr/2009_Handbook/ or, as in the past, you can find an electronic copy on the Orgs Drive under HR/Public/Staff Handbook. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the updated Handbook and those sections that have changed or been added. PLEASE THINK GREEN: only print those specific items you need as this handbook is approximately 150 pages in length! You do not need to sign an acknowledgment form.

Also for your ease in reference, the following is a summary of changes to the Staff Handbook.

Please let Human Resources know your questions or concerns. You can reach us at x1058.

NEW FORMAT:
•Sections made alphabetical for easy reference
•Footers added for each section for easy reference and update

NEW POLICIES:
•Fraud
•Military Family Leave (extension of FMLA)
•Records Retention
•Whistleblower

UPDATED or INCORPORATED POLICIES:

I've got a nice digital video camera that I bought over the summer and never ended up using it! I bought it for $350, and am willing to negotiate the price... I'm moving at the end of the month and would rather have the extra cash.

The holidays are coming up, this would make an awesome Christmas present:)
