Public Safety Reminder

As winter approaches and it continues to get dark earlier, we should all give renewed attention to our personal safety. Please remember these important safety tips and share them with others:

- Don’t walk alone. Where possible walk with friends, coworkers and classmates. When this is not an option, call the Department of Public Safety at x1717 and request an escort. Escorts are available all day, every day.

- Pay attention to your surroundings and walk with confidence. Criminals are looking easy targets. Walking with your shoulders back and your head up helps convey that you are not an easy target.

- Keep your car locked and remove valuable from your vehicle.

- Keep your car keys on your person at all times. The majority of cars that are stolen on campus are taken AFTER the keys are stolen. Don’t leave your keys out where they can be taken.

- Don’t leave your property unattended. Unattended purses, backpacks and computers are easy targets for thieves. Don’t give criminals the opportunity to take your property.

- Don’t leave your office or room unlocked an unattended. A home burglary takes about two minutes and the burglary of an office or residence hall room takes even less time. If you live on campus, lock your door when you go to sleep.

- Report suspicious activity to the Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by calling 612-330-1717.

If you have questions, concerns or suggestions regarding campus safety, please feel free to call John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or email pack@augsburg.edu.

General Announcements

Students Leave for School of the Americas 11/21

Forty Augsburg Students and two staff members from CSWL will depart Friday morning at 8 a.m. from the Foss Center to travel to Columbus, Georgia to attend the School of the Americas Protest. The protest seeks to close the School of the Americas (SOA). The SOA has trained over 64,000 Latin American soldiers in courses such as counterinsurgency, psychological warfare, and interrogation tactics. Graduates of the school have been consistently linked to human rights violations and to the suppression of popular movements in the Americas.

Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, "disappeared", massacred, and forced into refuge by those trained at the SOA.

Please come to send off students taking this trip this Friday morning at 8 a.m. There will also be a send off at the end of Wednesday's Chapel.

The Best Time to Quit Smoking is Now

Today is the 33rd Great American Smokeout. This day was inaugurated in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for one day. Now 44.2% of the 45.3 million Americans who smoke have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year. Today is a great opportunity to encourage tobacco users to commit to making a long term plan to quit for good.

In Minnesota, QuitPlan is available as a great smoking cessation resource. Here at Augsburg, we are fortunate to have QuitPlan available at Smiley's Clinic. This service is available by calling Smiley's at 612-333-0770 and setting up an appointment to meet with the smoking cessation professional counseling staff.

When you stop smoking, your body benefits quickly:
*After 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse lower;
*After 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal;
*After 24 hours, your risk of heart attack is lower;
*After 3 days, your sense of taste and smell return;
*After 2 weeks, your lung function starts to improve.

For more information or to get started with your plan to be tobacco-free call QuitPlan at Smiley's Clinic at 612-330-0770 or check out the website: www.quitplan.com If you have other questions, feel free to call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707.

Will today be your quit day?

Hildebrandt Named Academic All-American

Augsburg's Alex Hildebrandt named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men's soccer team

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/111908hildebrandt.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/19/08) -- Augsburg College men's soccer players Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team for men's soccer, it was announced on Wednesday.

Hildebrandt was named to the third team in the College Division (non-Division I) on a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Committee. It is the second year in a row that an Augsburg men's soccer player has earned Academic All-America honors; Nick Manders was named to the second team last year. Hildebrandt is the 21st CoSIDA Academic All-America selection for Augsburg in school history and eighth since 2005.

A defender, Hildebrandt is a finance major with a 3.86 grade-point average. The award is the latest for Hildebrandt, who earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team honors on Nov. 3 and All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors earlier this week.

Hildebrandt currently stands second on the Augsburg men's soccer team in scoring, with four goals and six assists for 14 points, including one game-winning goal and a penalty-kick goal. In his career at Augsburg (53 games, 51 starts), Hildebrandt has 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points, including three game-winning goals. He is the leader of an Augsburg defense that has allowed just 11 goals this season (0.47 team goals-against-average) with 13 shutouts.

Under fifth-year head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg is 12-3-7 overall, 7-2-1 in MIAC play. In in its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament, Augsburg is carrying a seven-game unbeaten streak (4-0-3) into a third-round contest at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday (11/22) at 7:30 p.m.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is administered by CoSIDA. Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs, who have already earned Academic All-District first-team honors, are eligible for inclusion on the College Division team. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institutions, have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Academic All-America ballot is voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. Since the program's inception in 1952, COSIDA has bestowed Academic All America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
