Batalden Convocation Info for Spring Syllabi

The Batalden Convocation will be held Friday, February 10, at 10:00 AM. I hope you will encourage your students to attend!

The speaker is Dr. Carolyn Finney, author of "Black Faces, White Spaces," a book exploring the social construction of African Americans relationship to nature. "Bridging the fields of environmental history, cultural studies, critical race studies, and geography, Finney argues that the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, and racial violence have shaped cultural understandings of the "great outdoors" and determined who should and can have access to natural spaces."

Gen Ed Question of the Week: Answer Anonymously

Experiential education has long been a hallmark of an Augsburg education. As part of the general education requirements for their degree, all students complete an "Augsburg Experience" requirement through one of the following ways: internships, study abroad, student-faculty research, student teaching, special immersion trips, and/or other approved experiences. For more information, see http://www.augsburg.edu/academics/augsburg-experience/

As the Gen Ed Design Team considers how to strengthen our commitment to experiential education, while at the same time simplifying and improving access, we seek your input. Please submit a response through this link: https://docs.google.com/a/augsburg.edu/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfT1oIUcd3ZiGf8IWiiNegYobrndDAM90MhVBKIjflxSdB8_A/viewform

All faculty, staff, and students are encourage to respond.

What are the greatest benefits of the Augsburg Experience as it is now configured?

PPC continues to hold open forums to discuss the question of faculty voting rights. See Moodle site for faculty on this issue:
https://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodlecommunity/mod/forum/view.php?f=2228

NB! These discussions inform our committee's mandate to revise the Faculty Handbook in general and are in no way a reaction to the adjunct and NPPF union vote. You may read the current language on voting rights in the Faculty Handbook (link on Faculty Senate Moodle site or in the first discussion thread of the link above).

The next open forums will be held TODAY (Thursday) from 4-5 p.m. in LIN 301 and TOMORROW (Friday) from 12-1 p.m. in SVE 102.

Get Paid For Your Internship - Apply Now

Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant recently awarded to Augsburg College. Augsburg has recently been awarded a Great Lakes Career Ready Grant. The Career Ready Internship grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation provides funds to colleges and universities so that they can partner with businesses and nonprofits to develop new paid internships, and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:
* Students must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA)

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins)

* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study) Not sure if you are eligible? Email studentfinances@augsburg.edu or check your awards package

* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations

* Internships will take place Spring 2017, Summer 2017, Fall 2017

Act now! Priority consideration is given to students who complete the short Augsburg application, so we recommend you complete it soon.

Looking For Committed Volunteers

We are looking for someone who wants to commit time to the Health Commons next semester, Mondays from 930-12, or Thursdays from 9-11. Health Commons is located at Downtown Central Lutheran Church, and we serve folks experiencing homelessness through a drop-in care model. Transportation could be arranged from campus, if that is an issue.

We also have a need for Somali-speaking students who would want to volunteer at Health Commons in Cedar-Riverside, located a few blocks from campus. These hours are more flexible and could be completed any time M-T, 11-1, or Fridays 1-4.

If you are a committed person interested in health care, social work, or working for good in the community, we would love to host an internship or service-learning experience!

We would be happy to work with any committed students on tailoring the experience to help them learn about trans-cultural care, drop-in health sites, and community work, based on interest.

Please email Dr. Katie Clark at clarkk@augsburg.edu if interested.
Thank you!

Sponsored Programs Joins Academic Affairs

I am pleased to announce that, effective immediately, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) will be transferring to Academic Affairs. This new structure not only recognizes the connection to faculty, whose research and scholarship drive this important work, but also strengthens and extends the collaboration that already exists between these two areas.

OSP oversees and manages external grant funding awarded to the college for faculty research, student programming, and other scholarly activities. With this new alignment, we aim to better understand the breadth and depth of funded projects taking place on campus and identify new opportunities that are responsive to the strategic priorities of the College and the academic program. OSP will remain committed to supporting faculty and staff through all stages of the grant seeking and management lifecycle.

Erica Swift, Director of Sponsored Programs, will continue to lead this work. Erica will report to Amy Gort, Dean of Arts and Sciences. In the short-term, Erica will continue to be housed in Institutional Advancement. When the move to the Hagfors Center occurs next year, we expect to move OSP to the new building.
