New Summer Course: Food -- A Global History

Learn world history by studying food!

Take HIS 195 / HIS 440 -- Food: A Global History this summer.

Food is at the center of human existence, and human history can be told as a story of how food has been produced, distributed and consumed. Taking a broad approach, the course traces changes in taste, production, trade and consumption, from the Paleolithic period to the early twentieth century. With case studies drawn from China, South Asia, Europe, and the Americas, it offers a global narrative of world food history. Students will learn about the fascinating histories of certain key foodstuffs (e.g. sugar, wheat, chocolate, potatoes, bugs, etc.) and examine a number of critical themes, including consumerism, famine, dieting, and food crises. Students will plant an organic garden, cook a Medieval meal, analyze Early American cookbooks, and trace the historical origins of a modern meal.

The course meets on the hybrid summer schedule (two meetings a month, with online sessions in between): May 10, 24, June 7, 21, July 5, 19, and August 2. Email Jacqui deVries <devries@augsburg.edu> for more information or a syllabus.

Grad Faculty Workshop on May 4

The Grad Council has been discussing ways to engage the campus more generally in conversations around graduate teaching and program support. The current campus conversations around the university question have contributed to our discussion. In December, there was a joint meeting of the Grad Council and the GAAC to talk about common issues. At that meeting both groups expressed support for more activities that would bring all faculty members who teach graduate courses together for further work that advances our programs.

Toward that end, on May 4 there will be a graduate faculty workshop in the Marshall Room. The day will start about 9am and will go through lunch -- finishing about 1pm. There will be another e-mail to follow that has more details regarding the topics and agenda, but for now, we are asking faculty from all graduate programs to mark their calendars and plan to join us that day.

The ability to partner and work effectively with the college's lead executives and the development staff is essential, as is the ability to present well and interact credibly with alumni and supporters.

This individual serves as an important link between the Associates, Advancement, Marketing and donors. This position plays an instrumental role in building relationships with alumni and other donors, tracking Donor Relations activities, and measuring impact of such work.

Kathleen Clark Co-Presents At Fairview

Katie Clark, DNP, RN and Dr. Osman Ahmed Harare presented at a breakout session for the Fairview Somali Cultural Health Day on Monday, April 4, 2016. Their topic was "Critical decision making and chronic illness." Katie was connecting her previous bedside nursing experience with her current experience working with the Somali population at the Health Commons at Cedar Riverside. Her focus was to teach rules of thumb for healthcare providers to deliver culturally congruent care to marginalized populations. She concentrated her efforts on reducing the role of stereotypes and relying on assumptions in the patient - provider relationship.

Augsburg Total Wellness--April Food Drive

For this month's wellness activity, we're going to focus on feeling good, by doing good.

We will be collecting food items for Augsburg College's Campus Cupboard, which provides free food to students throughout the year. The food shelf is supported by Campus Kitchen at Augsburg, A'Viands, and the Thrivent Leadership Fellows. In 2015, the Cupboard served 110 students, with a total of 244 visits to take home 985 free grocery items. This is a fantastic resource we have for our students and it wouldn't be possible without donations from folks like you!

Donations will be accepted in the Human Resources office from April 6 through April 15.

Items that the Cupboard is in need of (and what our students would like to see more of) include:
grains (e.g., cereal, rice, etc)
canned tuna
canned soup (not just canned broth)
canned vegetables and beans
non-dairy granola bars
chicken Alfredo sauce
tomato paste
pancake mix and waffle mix
snacks like Cheez-its and crackers
The Campus Cupboard will accept a variety of other non-perishable food items, which makes it even easier for us to help our students as they head into final examinations and summer!

Augsburg MFA Attended 2016 AWP Conference

The Augsburg MFA program just returned from a very successful AWP (Assoc. Writing Programs) conference and book fair in Los Angeles. Program Director Stephan Clark moderated a panel on what fiction writers can learn from screenwriters, participated in a panel that examined the fiction and nonfiction of Joan Didion, and joined the caucus of MFA low-residency program directors. Mentor Cary Waterman attended panels on hybrid poetry and nonfiction and participated in the AWP Women's Caucus. Both also met with Augsburg MFA students and alums who were at the conference, including John Garland, Dominique Haikel, Mary Lewis, Jay Moad, Jen Sparkman and Taryn Verley. We appreciate their generous help in spreading the news about Augsburg's Low-Residency MFA program!

The week will culminate with an neighborhood crawl Art Crawl on Saturday afternoon leading into the Cedar Cultural's Center Plaza grand opening celebration.

Earth Day Clean-up

Plastic bags, bottles and cigarette butts - oh my! Help us celebrate Earth Day and ring in spring as we spruce up our West Bank Neighborhood! We'll be meeting Friday April 22nd at Edna's Park (the area next to the Wienery) for a neighborhood-wide cleanup. 12pm-3pm.

We'll bring gloves, bags, and graffiti remover - and some snacks and drinks to keep everybody fueled up. You just bring yourself (and wear something you don't mind getting a little grubby.)

Kids' Bikes for Sale

The weather is going to be beautiful later this week! Does your preschooler or kindergartner need a new bike?

I have two 16" bikes for sale that my kiddo has outgrown. Some description is below; email me at voss@augsburg.edu if you're interested and to see photos.

Bike #1: 16" TykesBykes balance bike, orange color. If you've looked into balance bikes (bikes with no pedals, designed for kids to focus on balance without worrying about pedalling at the same time), you'll know that this is a high quality option. We bought it new in August 2013, and it is barely used. It's in very good condition - the only visible wear is a small tear in the rubber handlebar grip. Asking $60.

Bike #2: 16" Specialized Hotrock, blue color. This bike is very well loved. We purchased it used from Sunrise Cyclery last August. They put it in good working order before selling, and it's a great functional bike despite the well worn look. Asking $25.
