TODAY - Learn about Paid Summer Research Off-Campus

Each summer, universities, national labs, and other research institutions throughout the country offer paid research opportunities for undergraduates. In past years, Augsburg students have been accepted to programs at locations such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, The University of Minnesota, The University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, and The Mayo Clinic, among many others.

Check out URGO's website for a list of off-campus research opportunities and then come to the information session December 3rd to hear about the experiences of students who have completed off-campus research & get tips on your own applications!

Summer Research at Mayo in Bioethics - All Majors

OPEN TO ALL MAJORS!

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2016 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-6 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational sessions on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

Candidates must attach the following to the online application:

2. Resume/CV including your major, relevant coursework, honors, & related experiences
3. 5-10 page writing sample (such as a course paper), preferably on a topic in bioethics
4. Current college transcript
5. Two letters of recommendation from research mentors or professors

Liberal Learning for the 21st Century:

In 2015-16, the College is undertaking a review of its core curriculum. All faculty, staff and students are invited to take part in a series of conversations that will provide information (data!) and invite critical and creative responses to key questions.

The first conversation will be next week. Choose which time fits your schedule.

New Teaching Resource Available

Faculty Development on Your Time - CTL has purchased two copies of "Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers." They are on reserve in Lindell Library under the course title CTL. The book offers dozens of quick tips to help faculty gauge student learning and the effectiveness of their teaching.

Get Paid To Do An Internship! Apply Today

Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant recently awarded to Augsburg College. Augsburg has recently been awarded a Great Lakes Career Ready Grant. The Career Ready Internship grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation provides funds to colleges and universities so that they can partner with businesses and nonprofits to develop new paid internships, and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship
* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study)
* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations
* Internships will take place Spring 2016, Summer 2016 or Fall 2016

Act now! Priority consideration is given to students who complete the short Augsburg application, so we recommend you complete it soon.

Open House for Vicki Olson, Mon., 12/7, 3:30-5:30

On Monday, December 7, 3:30-5:30 p.m. friends, faculty, staff and students will gather in the Education Suite (Sverdrup 3) to honor Vicki Olson's invaluable work at the College. (Vicki retires in late December). Please join the department in honoring her longstanding leadership of both graduate and undergraduate programs, committed work for the department, the college and the community and her faithful stewardship and teaching of the next generation of K-12 teachers. A short honoring presentation will begin at 4:00 in the Education Suite.

Deadline TOMORROW for Engman Writing Prize

The Engman Prize is a literary competition honoring undergraduate writing is co-sponsored by Murphy Square and the English Department. Judges will select up to three winners in each of the prize categories. To enter, writers must be enrolled at Augsburg College.

The submission deadline is THIS FRIDAY, December 4. Winners will be notified later in the month.

Writers may enter in each of the four categories - creative non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and screenwriting - but can only win in one. The guidelines for the four categories are as follows:

Short Fiction - A complete short story of not more than 15 pages.

Creative Nonfiction - One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.

Poetry - At least three poems. Poetry entries with fewer than three poems will not be accepted.

Screenwriting - Up to 30 pages (either a complete short script or a portion of a longer script, such as the first act of a feature-length, narrative screenplay; use of screenplay format and style will be considered during the judging process).

Entries must be submitted electronically as attachments to engmanprize@augsburg.edu.

STEM Peer Mentoring - Spring 2016

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Mentors (STEMM) is a student-led mentoring program that focuses to provide support to first-year STEM students in navigating their undergraduate careers and preparation for success inside and outside of the classroom.

If you are a first-year student pursuing a STEM major and are interested in receiving mentoring from an upper-level STEM mentor during Spring 2016, please complete the application found at this link: http://goo.gl/forms/6p3ACSmwi5. The Inner Work of Radical Compassion: Transforming Difficult Emotions

Monday December 7th, 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Hoversten Chapel

This workshop, led by Mark Yaconelli, the Co-Founder of The Center for Engaged Compassion, is for persons who seek to deepen their skills and capacities for practicing engaged compassion. It is ideal for students, social justice activists, teachers, ministers, and anyone who seeks practical training in compassionate living. The workshop will offer a mixture of presentation, creative exercises, and discussion focused on understanding and transforming difficult emotions that often arise in interpersonal relationships and social actions that confront injustice.

At 7pm, on Thursday, 3 Dec, at Northfield's Content Bookstore, you can hear a half hour of Green, followed by a half-hour open mic.

Then at 7:30 pm, Tuesday, 15 Dec, at the University Club of St. Paul, Green is reading at Carol Connolly's monthly third-Tuesday poetry series: 7 or 8 invited poets--old favorites and new voices--for a strictly monitored 8 minutes.
