General Announcements

Dr. James Gross Appointed Associate Provost

Dear faculty and staff colleagues:

I am delighted to report that Dr. James Gross will be joining us on August 1 as Augsburg's new associate provost for academic innovation and strategic initiatives. In this role, Jim will have primary responsibility for new program growth and development that aligns with Augsburg's distinctive mission and responds to the educational and workforce needs in our region. He will also manage Augsburg in Rochester, which has recently been identified by Cabinet as offering near-term opportunities for growth.

In a pool of 80+ applicants, Jim stood out for the search committee at each stage of its review as uniquely qualified and well-positioned for this new role at the College. A seasoned academic leader, Jim brings deep experience and expertise developed across a range of colleges and universities in the Midwest and has direct experience with face-to-face, distance education, online and hybrid formats, and multi-institutional programs. He also brings experience with strategic planning and implementation, program review, and new program development. Jim has had first-hand experience in the creation of two regional centers for entrepreneurship. In addition, he has close working relationships in the higher educational community, both in the Twin Cities and in Rochester, where he has participated in community-wide planning processes for becoming a "Destination Medical Center" (DMC). He currently serves on two nonprofit boards in Rochester, and he is connected there to local leaders in economic development, K-12 education, the DMC, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Jim holds the PhD in Decision Science from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. He brings to the position 17 years of university teaching, including experience in undergraduate business, MBA, and Master's of Engineering Management instruction.

Most recently, Jim conducted research on academic offerings in the Twin Cities serving adult learners and served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC). As VPAA at RCTC, he represented the college externally and worked to develop new partnerships and opportunities, deepening support for music education and STEM programs in particular. He also oversaw the development of new student learning outcomes and the revision of developmental education to focus more emphatically on student success. In previous appointments, he developed new programs focused on solar energy and energy technology, strengthened educational partnerships, expanded online course offerings, and worked across multiple sectors--education, community organizations, industry and business--to ensure the success of multi-institutional partnerships.

Jim comes to Augsburg with demonstrated commitments to excellence in professional studies and in liberal education, to meeting the needs of diverse student populations, to ethical and equitable policies and practices, and to cultivating economic growth.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Gross.

Karen
