Teaching and Learning

Want Time to Write While Someone Else Cooks for You?

Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat - it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

The retreat will take place Sunday, May 17 at 1:00 p.m. (after lunch) through Tuesday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m. (after lunch). Please email ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.

CSBR Grants for Course Design and Revision

Up to seven $1,000 grants are available for the design of new or revision of existing courses to integrate CSBR themes.

With Augsburg's Center for Science, Business and Religion getting closer to realization, you are invited to submit course revision proposals that reflect the programmatic intent of the new center, which extends to all disciplines and programs. Proposals should evidence some understanding of the need the new building seeks to address, such as the limitations the traditional disciplinary structure entails for collegiate education, and envision how the proposed disciplinary integration will affect both student learning and career success.

Examples of possible proposals include--but are not limited to--the following: a biology course that incorporates the religious and economic dimensions of stem-cell research; an economics course that assesses the dialogue between the World Bank and indigenous religions; a religion course that explores Luther's understanding of vocation for emerging robotics technology; a computer science course that considers the theological implications of virtual worlds and avatars; an accounting course that considers Scriptural understandings of money and debt; a political science course that takes time to facilitate a dialogue between proponents of Western neo-liberalism and advocates of sharia law.

Submit proposal using the application on the CTL website. These applications are reviewed by the full faculty Development Committee.

April 20 is the deadline for your submission so time is tight.

Please contact Larry Crockett (crockett@augsburg.edu) or Russell Kleckley if you have questions.

Tickets on Sale Now for Carousel

Tickets on Sale Now for Carousel!

Music by Richard Rodgers
Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Directed by Darcey Engen
Musical Direction by Sonja Thompson

April 16,17,18 at 7 p.m.
April 19 at 3 p.m.

In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent ‘up there.' Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, CAROUSEL was Rodgers & Hammerstein's personal favorite.
