McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Spring 2015

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Spring 2015 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2016.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

If you are interested in learning more about the McNair Scholars Program, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Assistant at crombie@augsburg.edu or (612) 330-1380 to schedule an appointment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the program or if you're unsure whether or not you qualify.

Application Deadline: Friday, March 27, 5 p.m.

What Is It You Plan To Do This Coming Fall Term?

As the poet Mary Oliver puts it so nicely,

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

One answer to that question, at least for this coming Fall Semester, is to listen to Mark Twain, who advises that "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." There are a few spots left for the upcoming adventure and expedition to the Gulf of Mexico. Apply online at www.augsburg.edu/river by March 20th. Mary and Mark would approve.

TODAY: Drawn to the Word with Rev. Paul Oman

Hoversten Chapel: Wednesday, 3/11 - Friday, 3/13:

Join the Augsburg Community in this three-day worshipful event during daily chapel with guest preacher-painter, Rev. Paul Oman. Pastor Oman will, among our worship of music, prayer, spoken word, scripture, and song, paint a 9 foot by 6 foot portrayal of Jesus before our very eyes! Oman's Jesus painting will seek to reflect this time and place in our community's life together even as we celebrate the history that continues to shape our identity. In offering this "Drawn to the Word" experience, the Campus Ministry Office seeks to engage the community in conversation and reflection on race, radical hospitality, reformation, and faith. This event concludes Friday at 10:40am - the painting will be finished by 11am. We hope to see you there!

Augsburg College 7th Traditional Powwow - March 28

Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) and American Indian Student Services invites our Augsburg community to join us on Saturday, March 28th, 2015 for our 7th Traditional Powwow on campus in the Si Melby Gymnasium. This event has grown to be one of Augsburg's largest events attracting Native and Non-Native individuals from the region, including Canada. This event is open and free to all and we encourage you to bring your families and friends.

If this is your first time experiencing a Powwow, be prepared to learn, observe, and participate (optional) in a strong, rich culture of many different Native Nations coming together to 'dance' in celebration of New beginnings, blessings, community, etc. We hope that you can join us.

Grand entries (start of a session) are at 1 PM and 6 PM. This is when all the dancers enter the 'circle' aka dance arena at the same time to begin the day. These are very powerful to experience. Dancing will happen throughout the day (until roughly 9:30 PM) so feel free to come at any time.

Our 10 Augsburg American Indian Graduates will be honored at 3 PM and it would be nice for people to be there to share in that experience for them as well. Our brothers and sisters, a Aztec dance group, Kalpulli KetzalCoatlicue will be dancing following the Honoring Ceremony (3:45 PMish).

We hope that you will come and join us this year!

Profit and Loss and Environmental Impact

The next film in Augsburg's Native American Film Series is
Profit and Loss, which documents how indigenous groups in Papua New Guinea and near the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, fight the loss of land, water and health to mining and oil industries.

Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Screening of Profit and Loss begins at 7:00 pm
Reception 6:15 pm-6:45
Discussion to follow film in Sateren Auditorium, Anderson Music Hall

Hosts: Dr. Cecilia Martinez (The Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy) and Tom Goldtooth (Indigenous Environmental Network)
FFI: augsburg.edu/filmseries/2014/12/17/profit-loss/

Thank you to our sponsors:
Augsburg College, American Indian Studies Department, Environmental Studies Program, Institute for Global Studies, University of Minnesota, Center for Earth, Energy, and Democracy, Indigenous Environmental Network

Profit and Loss exposes industrial threats to native peoples' health, livelihood and cultural survival. In Papua New Guinea, a nickel mine that violently relocated villagers to taboo land is building a new pipeline and refinery, and dumping mining waste into the sea. In Alberta, First Nations people suffer from rare cancers as their traditional hunting grounds are strip-mined to unearth the world's third-largest oil reserve. Rare verité scenes of tribal life and intimate interviews allow indigenous people to tell their own stories—and confront us with the ethical consequences of our culture of consumption. Narrated by Graham Greene (Oneida).

LAST DAY for Craft Supply Drive

Kids in hospital rooms, waiting rooms, and outpatient clinics all find comfort and enjoyment in having something fun to do, and crafts are a great option! For this reason, crafts supplies are in constant demand at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. They are handed out to patients in these various areas and are available to inpatients and their siblings in the unit playrooms.

The students in Tri-Beta, the biological honors society, are collecting craft items for the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital Monday, March 9, through Friday, March 13. We are hoping to collect enough supplies to put together several kits, ready to be handed out to children of all ages at the hospital.

Below are some of the items we are looking for, though others would be great, too. All items must be new and unused. By hospital guidelines, we cannot accept items that may be dangerous to children, nor can we take glitter, live feathers, pasta, beans, latex balloons, leaves, moss, or dirt.

- Crayons
- Markers
- Colored pencils
- Construction paper
- Coloring books/pages
- Pom-poms
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Tissue paper
- Stickers
- Foam stickers/pages
- Popsicle sticks
- Bendy straws
- String
- Clothes pins
- Glue sticks/Elmer's glue

Boxes for item collection can be found in Christensen Center and in the Biology Suite (2nd Floor) of the Science Hall. Thank you for your support of the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital and of Tri-Beta. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Grafelman at grafel10@augsburg.edu.
