Services, Scholarship In Memory Of Max Bassinson

Services for Max Bassinson will be held this Friday and Saturday in Delmar, New York. Members of the community can post a tribute or note to the family through the Applebee Funeral Home site: http://www.applebeefuneralhome.com/tribute/details/401/Max_David_Bassinson/obituary.html

Max was a Dean's List student, a talented pianist and music performance major, and a StepUP program student who had celebrated two and a half years clean and sober. He passed away suddenly Saturday morning from a severe, undiagnosed heart disease. In a Circle Service Monday evening at Augsburg, Max's generous, kind, and enthusiastic spirit was remembered by those whose lives he touched in our community.

To honor his life, Max's family is establishing a music scholarship at Augsburg College. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Max David Bassinson Music Scholarship, Augsburg College, 2211 Riverside Avenue, CB 142, Minneapolis, MN 55454.

ACTC Bus Service to be Discontinued Effective May 22, 2015

The Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (Augsburg, Hamline, Macalester, St. Catherine, and St. Thomas) have decided to discontinue shuttle service between our campuses at the end of the current academic year. This decision was reached after a year of conversation that involved the chief academic officers, the chief financial officers, and the student affairs officers from each campus. In the course of this conversation, it became clear the ACTC shuttle, while providing real convenience to many members of our communities, has become unaffordable and unsustainable. The final day for the ACTC shuttle will be May 22.

Augsburg and ACTC remain committed to cross-registration and will continue to support students who wish to pursue opportunities to study on member campuses, to engage in internships or various forms of community engagement, or simply to explore the Twin Cities. Indeed, we are fortunate to be located in a vibrant urban setting with so many sustainable and affordable transportation options, which include the new Green Line, recently improved local bus routes, and car- and bike-sharing programs.

Augsburg will continue to support and work with local organizations, including Metro Transit, HOURCAR, Car2Go, and NiceRide to make available a range of affordable, sustainable transportation options for our students, faculty, and staff.

If you have questions or concerns regarding cross registration, please contact the Registrar's Office, registrar@augsburg.edu. For questions about inter-campus transit, contact Ann Garvey, vice president of Student Affairs at garvey@augsburg.edu.

Student Humor Writers Wanted 3/13

Augsburg's student-run newspaper, The Echo, is seeking humor writers and their submissions for the 3/27 edition of the paper, which is the JOKE ISSUE.

The Joke Issue is a satirical version of The Echo, in which the paper is transformed from a serious, professional, respectable publication into one that is sarcastic, silly, vulgar and perhaps a little honest.

We are seeking student writers to assist us in the creation of this fun adventure.

IF INTERESTED: Join us on Friday, March 13 at ~10:35 a.m. in the Echo office, located in the basement of Christensen. We will be planning the Joke Issue at this point during chapel time. This meeting is open to all Day students, regardless of journalist experience (though that is preferred).

If your submission is chosen to be published, you will be compensated (as is the case for all student writers for the Echo at any point in the year). Note: if we receive many submissions, we will prioritize articles that are most funny/most relevant to Augsburg's campus.

If you have any questions, please email Jens at pinther@augsburg.edu .

TODAY: Drawn to the Word with Rev. Paul Oman

Hoversten Chapel: Wednesday, 3/11 - Friday, 3/13:

Join the Augsburg Community in this three-day worshipful event during daily chapel with guest preacher-painter, Rev. Paul Oman. Pastor Oman will, among our worship of music, prayer, spoken word, scripture, and song, paint a 9 foot by 6 foot portrayal of Jesus before our very eyes! Oman's Jesus painting will seek to reflect this time and place in our community's life together even as we celebrate the history that continues to shape our identity. In offering this "Drawn to the Word" experience, the Campus Ministry Office seeks to engage the community in conversation and reflection on race, radical hospitality, reformation, and faith. Painting continues today at 11:30am and concludes Friday at 10:40am. We hope to see you there!

Craft Supply Drive for U of M Children's Hospital

Kids in hospital rooms, waiting rooms, and outpatient clinics all find comfort and enjoyment in having something fun to do, and crafts are a great option! For this reason, crafts supplies are in constant demand at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. They are handed out to patients in these various areas and are available to inpatients and their siblings in the unit playrooms.

The students in Tri-Beta, the biological honors society, are collecting craft items for the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital Monday, March 9, through Friday, March 13. We are hoping to collect enough supplies to put together several kits, ready to be handed out to children of all ages at the hospital.

Below are some of the items we are looking for, though others would be great, too. All items must be new and unused. By hospital guidelines, we cannot accept items that may be dangerous to children, nor can we take glitter, live feathers, pasta, beans, latex balloons, leaves, moss, or dirt.
- Crayons
- Markers
- Colored pencils
- Construction paper
- Coloring books/pages
- Pom-poms
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Tissue paper
- Stickers
- Foam stickers/pages
- Popsicle sticks
- Bendy straws
- String
- Clothes pins
- Glue sticks/Elmer's glue

Boxes for item collection can be found in Christensen Center and in the Biology Suite (2nd Floor) of the Science Hall. Thank you for your support of the U of M Masonic Children's Hospital and of Tri-Beta. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Grafelman at grafel10@augsburg.edu.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Phil Formo Remembers Family Legacy at Augsburg

If Augsburg had a title of "honorary alumnus," it might go to Phil Formo. His family connections run deep at Augsburg, but he never studied on campus himself. "It was supposed to be automatic that I'd go to Augsburg," remembers Formo. Instead, in a decision that he says surprised even himself, he chose to attend Pacific Lutheran University. Even without the Augsburg degree he did OK for himself: he became a special education teacher, earned a MEd from St. Cloud State and a MDiv from Luther Seminary, and was called to serve four Minnesota churches. Now retired, Formo celebrates his family's Augsburg legacy through his philanthropy. His generosity includes support for two endowed scholarship funds and a gift for the Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR).

Formo's Augsburg connections trace back to his grandfather, Andreas Helland, who emigrated from Norway in 1889 at age 19. A graduate of Augsburg seminary, Helland served as professor of New Testament from 1905 to 1940. He wrote an early definitive history of Augsburg Seminary; edited Augsburg College President Georg Sverdrup's collected works; and in 1947 wrote a biography of President Sverdrup.

In 2013, his grandson Formo published a creative memoir based on professor Helland's log of his life's events. "Papa – A Life Remembered" follows Andreas from boyhood on a North Sea island, through his years at Augsburg and his nearly four decades of service on the Lutheran Board of Missions, to his death in 1951. "He was so connected with Augsburg," says Formo. "When the campaign for the new science hall began [in the 1940s], my grandfather gave the first sizable gift, as well as others for the project as time went on."

From that auspicious start, Augsburg became part of the family. "Both the Helland and Formo families went to Augsburg," explains Formo. His late father, Regent Emeritus Jerome Formo '37 and mother Winifred (Helland) '37 met at Augsburg and sang in the College's first-ever choir concert in the 1930s. Formo remembers his father talking about decisions and challenges at Augsburg, and, with Winnie, frequently attending Augsburg events. His father chaired the call committee for a new College president in the early 1960s. "When Oscar Anderson [Augsburg president from 1963 to 1980] said ‘yes,'" remembers Formo, "our family celebrated by going to Perkins for 60-cent pancakes." Jerome Formo, who was vice president of Plastics, Inc., in St. Paul, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1983.

Formo is also connected to Augsburg through his uncle Melvin Helland '27, who taught New Testament at the seminary; his uncle Norman Anderson, who taught religion and journalism, and served as an alumni and development contact; and others. "They're just all over," says Formo of his family's ties to Augsburg. "In a sense, it was home."
