Thefts from Athletic Areas

Over the past week (and this semester) we have had multiple thefts from Kennedy, Melby, the Ice Arena, and the Athletic Field. These thefts have involved items stolen from lockers, but many thefts (here and elsewhere) involved valuable items being left unattended and unsecured. We are also concerned because the thieves have used victims' fobs to gain access to secure areas, such as locker rooms.

Nov. 17, 2014 - A fob and room key were stolen from the weight room. The suspects tried the fob on secure doors (including doors to which the fob had access) in Kennedy/Melby before the theft was noticed and reported.

Nov. 16, 2014 - Personal items were left visible and two suspects entered the Ice Arena from the street and stole it within approximately 7 minutes.

Nov. 13, 2014 - A fob and room key were stolen from the Athletic Field

Nov. 11, 2014 - Two male suspects used a stolen fob to enter a women's locker room and steal items. It appears the fob was stolen using a bolt cutter on a locker in a separate secure area. The suspects stole multiple items from multiple victims.

Nov. 4, 2014 - A student reported his shoes were stolen from the football locker room. The shoes were not secured in a locked locker.

* Lock your Doors - even if you will only be gone for a minute, lock your doors
* Keep Valuables out of Sight and Secure them - use locked drawers or cabinets
* Do Not Leave Valuables Unattended
* Secure Valuables - Do not leave your purchase cards, credit cards, cash unattended in your office unless there is a safe or vault—especially overnight or on weekends
* Do Not Bring an Excessive Amount of Cash to Work or Other Unnecessary Items
* Keep Track of Serial Numbers or Other Identifying Information
* Report Suspicious People and/or Activity to DPS Immediately
* If you are the Victim of Theft - report the incident to DPS immediately

Thefts only take a few moments. Contact DPS immediately if you see someone who looks out of place in the Athletic areas or is acting suspiciously.

Volunteer or Work as a Debate Judge Saturday

MNUDL is looking for High School Debate Judges this weekend, to judge two - four rounds of debate. Judges listen to debate, take notes and give feedback to students.

There are two shifts, Morning (8 a.m. - 12 p.m.) and Afternoon (1 p.m. - 5 p.m.) and free lunch from 12 - 1 p.m. for judges. College students also have the option of working as PAID judge.

The tournament will be at U of MN's East Bank at Folwell Hall.

How are colleges and universities re-imagining undergraduate curricula and majors to help students thrive in a globally interconnected world? Many institutions include as part of their mission statements promises to prepare all of their graduates for active, successful engagement in the global community. Such promises are often more easily made than kept.

Experts will share their own experiences of redesigning general education programs that incorporate global learning. Participants will then join the conversation to discuss:

+tools that faculty, including part-time faculty, can use to infuse courses with global learning;
+assessment of student learning initiatives that provide meaningful information on global learning outcomes;
+local experiential learning models that help students address global issues in their community.

Faculty Conversations are designed for faculty members, academic leaders, researchers, and international educators interested in student learning outcomes and the educational experiences--curricular and co-curricular--created to help students gain and practice global knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

Take advantage of this special and stimulating conversation that taps into NAFSA's growing community of practice focused on global learning.

Nabo is open from 7:30am to 8:00pm. The Special of the Day is Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup.

Einsteins is open from 7:30am-9:00pm, with the late night menu starting at 7:00pm.

The Commons is open from 7:30am-7:00pm. Market Place is serving Carved Turkey Breast, Green Bean Casserole, Roast Garlic Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, and Stuffing. Vege is serving Dinner Rolls, Cranberry Sauce, Roasted Squash with Cranberry and Brussel Sprouts, and Vegan Chicken Gravy.

On Wednesday, November 26 The Commons, Einsteins, and Nabo will be closing at 1:30pm. Einsteins and Nabo will be closed from November 27 through November 30. The Commons will be closed November 27 through November 29 and will reopen for Dinner at 5:00pm on November 30.

On December 12 from 11:00am-1:00pm in the Christensen Center Lobby there will be a meeting with The Food Service Director and a Dietician visit.

Thanksgiving Timesheet Changes

All student workers, staff employees and supervisors:

With Thanksgiving week being a payroll week, we will be adjusting the cutoffs for timesheet approvals for the week of November 24th. All students and staff must submit their timesheets for approval by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24. After employees have submitted their timesheet for approval, supervisors must approve the timecards by 4:00 p.m., Monday, November 24. Changes to timesheets or approvals that do not get completed, within the above time frame, will not be paid and require a manual timesheet submitted to payroll for payment in the next pay period.

Great American Smokeout TODAY

Every year on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the Great American Smokeout. They may use the date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. The Great American Smokeout challenges people to stop using tobacco and helps people know about the many tools they can use to help them quit and stay quit.

IT'S HARD TO QUIT TOBACCO!

Research shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have support such as:

telephone smoking cessation hotlines
stop smoking groups
online quit groups
counseling
nicotine replacement products
prescription meds to lessen cravings
guide books
encouragement and support from friends and family members.

Using 2 or more of these measures to quit smoking works better than using one one of them alone.

Economics Lecture Series

The Economics Department and Economics Club is sponsoring the ECONOMICS LECTURE SERIES on Thursday, November 20 at 6:00 p.m. in OREN 100. Guest speaker, Dr. Rajamani will discuss the emerging trends in health informatics.

Dr. Rajamani has a PhD in health informatics from the University of Minnesota and a medical degree from India. Her research interests are in public health informatics, impact of information technology in public health practice and population health, adoption and use of standards and trying to measure and understand the impact of interoperability.

Help Wanted: Part Time Personal Care Assistant

I am a smart, kind, easy going, working gal who happens to be in a wheelchair. Because of my Muscular Dystrophy, I need various types of physical assistance at different times of the day. I am looking to hire females to provide assistance in daily living activities during the early morning, late afternoon, and/or evening during the work week, and especially during the weekends. The start day would be immediate. My PCAs are employed through the agency Accra Care, and the pay is around $12 per hour.
