Tree Trimming - Monday, March 17
Please take extra care: Tree trimmers will be on campus Monday, March 17. They will be working in the quad and other areas.
Crime Alert - Burglary in Mortensen
March 13, 2014: Burglary
Public Safety was notified this morning of electronics missing from a dorm room in Mortensen Hall. The residents believe the burglary happened between 0100 and 0300 of March 13 while they were sleeping. It appears the offender(s) gained entry because the apartment door was unlocked. Public Safety and the Minneapolis Police are currently investigating the incident. If you have any information about this crime, please report to Public Safety Dispatch 612-330-1717 or Minneapolis Police 911.
You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!
Immediately report any suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.
Always lock your dorm room/individual office door and the suite door whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.
If you misplace or do not have a key, please call x1717 and ask us to come and lock the dorm/office. Please wait in the office until we arrive.
Do not prop open doors. If you see a door propped open, close the door and report it to DPS by calling 1717.
Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in locking drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.
Keep your keys on your person at all times.
Back up your data. Your files can easily be backed up to your network folder or a USB drive. Don't risk losing your notes, research and other work. If you have any questions about the best way to back up your data, talk to your LFC or to Student Computing.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014
Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research, and other scholarly activities. McNair teams scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.
The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, and advising in preparation for graduate study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Zyzzogeton Registration Deadline Today
Augsburg's annual student research festival, Zyzzogeton, will be held on April 11 from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.
Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton by today. Poster and abstract submission directions are detailed at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton as well.

Please Complete the NSSE Before Spring Break
For Augsburg College to continue to strengthen the academic program and enhance student learning, it is important that reliable and sufficient data is collected.
Each first-year and fourth-year student has been invited (by email) to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). In past years, the response rate has made it difficult to get reliable data for each major. If more students participate, we will be able to provide specific data for majors about how students are engaged.
The survey will only be available for another week. Please take the time before Spring Break complete the survey. Doing so will help Augsburg faculty and staff understand your perceptions of the academic program and how it might be improved.

Spring Blood Drive Coming 3/31
It's time once again for the Memorial Blood Center spring blood drive. MBC will be here Monday 3/31/14 from 10 am-4 p.m. in the East Commons. All are encouraged to sign-up for a time to donate blood and help save lives.
If you are interested in donating you can do it several different ways:
1. Go online and select a time at www.mbc.org/searchdrives and enter sponsor code 0027
2. Call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707 to get a time.
3. Stop by Christensen Center while we are tabling on 3/24 from 10-noon and sign up in person. Lots of ways to sign up to donate!

Interactive Wellness Mobile App
An app update version has been updated in the Google store for Droid users is available and will be soon for Apple users.
This will fix the need to enter a portal code after any updates. If you are a Droid user, please make sure you are using the newest version of the Interactive Wellness Mobile app.
If you are experiencing problems and if entering the "INT1" portal code does not work, you will need to delete the app and reinstall.

Christensen-Justice Award Due TODAY
The Marina Christensen-Justice Award is presented to one graduating senior at commencement each year who best exemplifies Augsburg's motto "Education for Service." The student must have demonstrated a dedication to community involvement as characterized by the personal and professional life of Marina Christensen-Justice, who courageously and effectively reached out to disadvantaged people and communities.
Nomination should include:
Name of graduating senior
Major
Person who is submitting the nomination
Description of the ways that the student has been involved in the off-campus community during his/her time at Augsburg though service-learning experiences, internships, volunteer experiences,the Bonner Program, etc.

Spring All Hands Meeting - April 1
The spring 2014 All Hands meeting is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, April 1, in Hoversten Chapel.
The agenda will include brief updates on current topics -- enrollment, fundraising, accreditation, strategic planning, the work of the Governance Task Force, and the progress of the due diligence process on the potential opportunity in Phoenix -- followed by a reflection and conversation led by members of the Governance Task Force. The Task Force will be seeking input on 2-3 tentative ideas around ways to improve governance at the College and will make those ideas available by Friday, March 28, for review in advance of the meeting.
Farewell Reception for Marissa Machado
It is with both sadness and excitement that the Office of Admissions announces Marissa Machado, an Augsburg graduate and member of the Admissions staff over the last 14 years will be leaving the college to become the Director of Admissions at Northwestern Health Sciences in Bloomington. Although her last day with us will be March 28th, we will have a send off/farewell in her honor this Tuesday, March 18 from 2:30-4:00 in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center. We hope you will be able to stop by to wish Marissa well in her next professional chapter.

"Grand Entries," which are the start of a dance session are at 1 PM and 6 PM and if you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to see a grand entry, however you are invited to come anytime throughout the day. There will be Craft Vendors, information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos for sale and a lot of fun and opportunity to learn. Please join us.

Margo Ensz Receives Honorable Mention, Posters on the Hill
Each year, hundreds of undergraduates apply to the Council on Undergraduate Research to present their research at the Posters on the Hill event in Washington, DC. If selected, students meet members of Congress, funding agencies, and foundations, and have the opportunity to advocate for undergraduate research programs. Incredibly competitive, only the top 10% of applicants are selected to present or receive Honorable Mention.
Summa cum laude English graduate, Margo Ensz, was among this top 10% and received Honorable Mention for her URGO summer research project, "Analyzing the Persistence of a Sense of Place Among Young Adults in the Technology-Rich, A-Contextual 21st Century," advised by Dr. Colin Irvine. In addition to Margo's impressive academic accomplishments at Augsburg, she also participated in the Augsburg Choir, the Honors Review, and held an internship at Milkweed Editions. Congratulations, Margo, for this prestigious recognition of your work!
Augsburg Parent Makes Gift to CSBR
Dr. Robert Florence, director of the Allina Health Vadnais Heights Clinic where he practices internal medicine, chose a big university for his undergraduate studies. Teaching assistants rather than professors often taught classes. Lecture halls sometimes held hundreds of students. "I even took a few classes over closed-circuit television," he notes.
Two of his children, Jeffrey '02 and Beth '08, chose Augsburg College, and their educational experience couldn't have been more different from their father's. Beth says her largest class had about 35 students and her smallest had only three students. Such a personal approach to education left a lasting impression on her.
