Ally Trainings Available in February

Staff and faculty are invited to attend Ally Trainings this February. These workshops give participants an opportunity to learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, discuss terminology, and build skills to work with LGBTQIA communities. Workshops are taking place:

Paid Summer Research Opportunities

In addition to URGO's undergraduate on-campus summer research program (phase 1 apps due Feb. 3), many students also apply for summer research programs throughout the country. Last year Augsburg students could be found conducting research at Johns Hopkins, The National Institute of Standards and Technology, The University of Minnesota, The Mayo Clinic, and more.

Last Budget Manager's Training Session

Did you miss last week's Budget Manager's training session? Never fear, there will be one last chance to attend.

The last session will be Wednesday, January 29 between 1-2 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Center suite 100.

This training is designed to help new budget managers navigate the Fiscal 2015 budget cycle and introduce them to the Excel budget templates. However, all budget managers are welcome. Please note if you are already familiar with this process, nothing has changed from last year.

Remember, Deans and Divisional VPs will be reviewing these budgets during the week of February 3. They will then submit to Finance on Monday, February 10.

The Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics is part of Augsburg College's annual Convocation Series. The Batalden Seminar will feature former Augsburg professor Sister Peggy O'Neill, S.C., President and Director of Centro Arte para la Paz, Suchitoto, El Salvador. This year's seminar is entitled "Awakening to the Reality of a Crucified World: Discovering What It Means to Be Human." Sister Peggy's address will focus on her "calling" to work in El Salvador during the armed conflict of the 80s and then her development of the Center as a means for healing from violence through the arts.

1/23 - Medical Scribe Information Session

Next Thursday, URGO will be hosting an information session on medical scribing with an emergency department scribing agency from here in the Twin Cities. A scribe is a medical documentation specialist who works with an emergency department physician to produce medical notes recording what occurs during a patient's visit. The scribe is directly involved in patient interviews and physical exams and continues as an integral part of the treatment team throughout the patient's stay in the emergency department. Many students applying for medical school or other health-related fields have found scribing to be a great learning experience.

$8,000 Scholarship - Study Marketing in Norway

$8,000 Scholarship for Study Abroad in Norway.

Through the generous support of the High North Fellowship Grant, the Norwegian government and Harstad University College are offering a scholarship to one Augsburg College student to participate in their English-language Advanced Marketing Program in Fall 2014.

The grant consists of a travel stipend of NOK 9,700 (approx., $1500 USD) plus a monthly living stipend of NOK 9,700 (approx., $1500 USD) from September-December. The selected grantee will also receive $1000 grant in addition to financial aid received through Augsburg College (Federal & State grants, loans, and Augsburg Aid).

+Junior or Senior Standing in Fall 2014

MKT 466-International Marketing | 4 cr.

MKT 499-Topics: Business-to-Business Marketing & Branding | 4 cr.

The program will form a good basis for the student's first step towards a position in a market-oriented organization. As this marketing program is of an analytical nature, it qualifies the student for positions in marketing and sales departments in both small and medium sized companies within the fields of retailing, travel and tourism, export and international enterprises.

Breakthrough Twin Cities - On Campus

Breakthrough staff will be tabling in the Christensen Center on January 23 from 10:00AM-1:00PM.

Breakthrough Twin Cities (BTC) launches highly motivated, under-resourced students on a path to college and inspires high school and college students to pursue careers in education. BTC is seeking a passionate, diverse group of talented undergraduate and high school students (juniors/seniors) to apply for our paid summer teaching fellowship, complete with training and classroom teaching experience. Teaching at Breakthrough is a lifestyle more than a job. By the end of this experience, you will definitely know if teaching is the right path for you!

The Breakthrough summer teaching fellowship offers...
1. An opportunity to teach rigorous academic courses in English, science, social studies, and electives with the support of an experienced instructional coach.
2. Training in lesson planning, classroom management, and student-centered teaching.

Need Your Resume Reviewed? Stop by Quick Stop

Career Quick Stop hours: Tuesdays from 1:00-2:30 p.m. and Wednesday's 10:00-11:30 a.m.

These walk-in hours are meant for quick career question and short resume reviews. Appointments will be limited to 15 minutes and students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Simply check-in at Career & Internship Services (Christensen Center, Suite 100).

Personal Care Attendants Needed - Table Wednesday

Student Experience is a 25 year old local company helping students to develop and gain health related experience while delivering exceptional client care. Representatives will be on campus Wednesday, January 22 from 9:30 a.m-1:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Christensen Center.

Their company is currently looking to fill 12 positions for Personal Care Assistants. They offer the ability for students to gain paid work experience, and gain transferrable skills in their field. Schedules are flexible to class requirements and they offer a Competitive Edge program which helps students to stand out among their peers when applying to their post graduate positions.

Majority of students who work at Student Experience are in Health Science or Human Service related areas of study.

Meet CCHP Counselor Abby Johnson Schnedler, LMFT

The Center for Counseling and Health Promotion staff is pleased to have Abby Johnson Schnedler join the CCHP staff, filling an open counseling position.

She is trained and licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Abby completed her graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and completed her undergraduate work at Augsburg College with a psychology major. Abby Schnedler Johnson knows Augsburg well and has a deep commitment to the College. You may have met her when she worked at Augsburg as an Administrative Assistant in Admissions.

We are very fortunate to have her join the CCHP staff and we hope that you have the chance to meet her and to welcome her in her new role at Augsburg College!

SC 2014-15 Applications Now Available

Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, and Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color that serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Five "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2014-15.

Students who are Promise Scholars, President Scholars or International President Scholars are NOT eligible for SC.

Eligibility Criteria:
Current Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
Demonstrated community involvement on or off campus
GPA of 2.5 or higher

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2014

Theater Department – Auditions for Peer Gynt

The Augsburg Theater Department, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota's BA Theater Performance Program, will hold auditions for its main stage production of Peer Gynt. Students from each department will work closely with the project leaders, Darcey Engen, Chair and Associate Professor of Theater at Augsburg College and Luverne Seifert, Head of BA Theater Performance at the University of Minnesota, to create an innovative, site specific, outdoor production at the University of Minnesota Arboretum in Chaska, Minnesota. This adaptation of Ibsen's classic is an exploration of this epic Norwegian play and how it reflects culture, history and mythology.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition! As many as 20 rolls will be cast, including actors, musicians, singers and composers.

Auditions will be held in the Ailene Cole Green Room, located in Foss Center, on:
Tuesday, January 21 from 7-9pm. and
Wednesday, January 22 from 4-6pm.
There will be no callbacks.

Please prepare a single, one minute monologue. It can be anything—contemporary, classic, poetic, realistic, comedic, serious, etc. It can even be a poem. It is preferable that it be memorized.

Rehearsals begin February 10 and go through April 9; performance dates are April 10-13.

StarDreamers—The Spirit Water People is a 3-part documentary created by filmmaker Sheldon Wolfchild. The film weaves oral and written history and traditional Dakota beliefs together to offer a truthful telling of the Dakota story.

Part 1: "The Indian System" traces the mid-1800s interaction of Dakota with the U.S. Government. This history was a period when treaties were forced upon the Dakota people, and were manipulated by such noted Minnesotans as Henry H. Sibley and Alexander Ramsey.

Screening will be followed by a conversation with 38plus2 director, Sheldon Wolfchild and historian, Mark Diedrich. Attendees filling out an event evaluation will be entered in a drawing for Brotherhood Brew coffee or tea products and a book by M. Elise Marrubio after the discussion.

Presented in collaboration with the Augsburg American Indian Studies Program, Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative, Discussions that Encounter, Brotherhood Brew, and St Paul Interfaith Network.

Jack El-Hai Reading, Mon., Jan. 27

MFA mentor and literary journalist Jack El-Hai will read from his work on Monday, Jan. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Art Gallery, Christensen Center.

This is a Graduate Information Session and is open to the public.

Augsburg's Barnes and Noble Bookstore will have books available for purchase and Jack will sign books after the reading.
