Crime Alert
September, 20th 2013: Sexual Assault
The Augsburg Department of Public Safety (DPS) recently learned of a Sexual Assault that occurred on campus. It was reported the assault took place in the early hours of Friday, Sept. 20th, in a campus residential building. The suspect was a recent acquaintance of the victim. The suspect is not an Augsburg student and Department of Public Safety believes this crime to be an isolated incident. However, DPS wants to remind the campus community to be aware or their surroundings and take precautions to ensure one own safety.

- If you feel in danger, get help immediately!
- Never leave your drink unattended at parties or clubs.
- Bring your own drinks to private parties.
- Do not accept drinks from punch bowls or other common containers; only accept drinks in cans or closed containers.
- Go out with a group of friends or double date - and watch out for your friends.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- When dating or socializing, try to get as much information about your date or new friends as possible. If you met this date/friend through mutual friends, ask them what they know about this person.

Crime Alert - Armed Robbery
Sept. 20th 2013 - Armed Robbery
Public Safety was notified early this morning (4:25 am) of an armed robbery near the intersection of 21st Ave S and 7th Street S. Two suspects approached on bicycles and were armed with a small caliber handgun. They searched two victims for valuables. Suspects took a cell phone, wallet, and monetary items. They then left the scene on bicycle. The description of the suspects is below. If you have any information about this crimes or believe you may have witnessed something in relation to this crime, call Minneapolis Police 911.
Suspect 1:
Black Male, 6 foot 4 inches, medium build, wearing a leather jacket over a hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He had a full groomed beard. Bicycle was a yellow Schwinn.
Suspect 2:
Black Male, 5 foot 8 inches, thin build, wearing jeans and a dark gray hooded sweatshirt over a black T- shirt. He was clean shaven. Bicycle was a small scale silver mountain bike. This suspect was in possession of the small caliber handgun.

Public Safety Escorts are available from dusk until dawn each day by calling 612-330-1717.
Walk in well lit areas and with a friend.
Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Leave valuables at home when possible.
Call Public Safety or 911 immediately to report suspicious behavior, if you witness a crime, or are victimized.
Teaching and Learning
Writing Lab Is Now Open
The Augsburg College Writing Lab is now open for the current academic year. Last year, tutors in the Lab conducted 2,500 sessions with Augsburg students, working on a wide variety of writing assignments at various stages of completion. The Lab is located in Lindell Library, ground floor, to the left of the circulation desk. Students are welcome to come with a hard copy of their work and professors are able to contact Professor Swanson if they would like a tutor to visit their classes to provide further information.
Hours for the year are as follows:
Monday: 11:10 a.m. - 1:40 p.m. and 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 -10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3:30 - 6 p.m. and 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 5 - 8 p.m.

State of the College Slides, Audio, Transcript
As communicated Friday, an audio replay of and slides from this past Thursday's annual State of the College meeting have been posted on the State of the College 2013 page, in the College Reports section of Inside Augsburg. The transcript of the event will be posted some time today or tomorrow.
Student Phoners Needed in Admissions
The Admissions Office is looking for current students to work part-time evening hours contacting prospective Auggies! We are seeking enthusiastic callers who will reach out to incoming students and families to talk about applying to the college, visiting campus, and enrollment events. This is a great chance to use your communication skills as well as bring attention to many of the great opportunities Augsburg has to offer.
Interested applicants should apply online through the Augsburg HR employment website. Hours for this position are Monday through Thursday evenings from 5-9 p.m. Shifts are flexible, but you must be available at least 4-6 hours during the calling week. Applications must be submitted by Friday, September 27 and interviews will be scheduled shortly after.

Free Lockers Available for Commuter Students
Campus Activities and Orientation provides free lockers for students (Day, WEC, and Graduate) who commute to campus during the academic year. Lockers are located on the Ground and 2nd Levels of Science Building.
These lockers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. To request your locker for the academic year, please print out, complete, and sign the form below and turn it into the Christensen Center Welcome Desk OR Michael Grewe in Christensen Center Room 1D (located on the ground floor in the "Auggie's Nest").

Anderson 5k Fun Run
Come join us for the Anderson 5k Fun Run! The event will be on Saturday, September 28 at 10 a.m. All students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited.
The race will begin at Anderson Hall and end at Murphy Park, where Taste of Augsburg will soon start. The route is along the river and back.
Cost of running: Free
Cost of a T-shirt for students: $5
Cost of a T-shirt for staff, faculty, and alumni: $10
You do not have to buy a T-shirt to run, but they are cool, so it is worth it!
Runners can register at any Residence Life office. On the day of the event, please arrive at 9:30 a.m. so we can check you in and give you your shirt.

Students - Get Your Flu Shots
CCHP welcomes the Minnesota Visiting Nurse Association to Augsburg on Monday 9/30/13 from 12 noon - 3:00 p.m. for its annual flu shot clinic. The clinic is open to all students and any faculty and staff who did not have the opportunity to get a flu shot from the Homeland Health Clinics are also welcome to get their flu shot from MVNA.
Most insurances are accepted so please bring your insurance card and a photo ID. Cash or checks are also accepted for the flu shot which costs $29
No appointments are necessary as it is a walk-in clinic. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Dianne in the CCHP office at 612-330-1707.

CCHP Health Fair on Wednesday
Please join the staff from the Center for Counseling and Health Promotion at their annual CCHP health fair, which will be held Wednesday 9/25/13 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Quad as part of Homecoming week activities.
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to come to the Quad for free chair massages, music, healthy snacks, opportunity to sign up to donate blood and to meet and learn from over 25 health and mental health community resources.

North Star STEM Alliance Kickoff on September 25
The North Star STEM Alliance is a 17-membership partnership among Minnesota colleges, universities, and community organizations committed to supporting multicultural students toward earning bachelor's degrees in STEM.
Join other Augsburg students attending the North Star STEM Alliance Kickoff on September 25, 5-9 p.m., at the TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota Campus.

North Star STEM hosts GEM Grad Lab
GEM Getting Ready for Advance Degrees (GRAD) Laboratory (Sponsored by North Star STEM and held at the University of Minnesota)
Date & Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, October 19
Please join us for the GEM GRAD Lab. The GRAD Lab is a fun, engaging (and free!) symposium where participants, science and engineering undergraduates, get full information on the importance of graduate school and what is needed to successfully gain admittance with financial support. Speakers range from current graduate students to University faculty and senior administrators. They are selected from diverse communities and disciplines to present on the following topics:
- "Why Graduate School"
- "How to Prepare for Graduate School"
- "Understanding the GEM Fellowship"
- "Voices From the Field: Real Life Research and Internship Experiences"
GRAD Lab encourages young people to consider graduate engineering or science education and applying for the GEM fellowship. Focusing on the global importance of research and innovation, life-long career benefits, and real world role models the symposium will help each student envision his or her future as a technology leader, successfully apply for a GEM fellowship, and gain entry to a graduate program.

Congrats to the History Department
Congratulations to the History Department on their Give to The Max Day project
Thursday, November 14 is Give to the Max Day, and this year, faculty and staff from all over campus are creating their own Give to the Max Day fundraising projects to help Augsburg come in 1st place among all Minnesota colleges and universities to win an extra $10,000 prize for a first-place finish.
Congrats to the History Department, who have already received a $500 matching pledge from JC '12, a recent graduate of the history department, for their Give to the Max Day project! This project will provide research funding for junior and senior Honors students.

Augsburg Mens Lacrosse
The Augsburg Mens Lacrosse team is a club program that is growing rapidly. We travel all over the Midwest for fun-filled weekends of lacrosse. We have a variety of skill levels including beginners who end up becoming skillful players. We focus on having fun and winning games.
