Integrated Course Design Workshop

All faculty are invited to participate in a workshop designed to enhance your instructional design skills and discover ways to incorporate online learning in your courses. It is particularly critical for Augsburg for Adults and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14.

The Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning is a hands-on workshop that introduces Augsburg's Moodle Template for developing your course in accordance with GAAC/AAC requirements and a Course Design Support site to provide additional detail and examples for Moodle applications. In this workshop, you will explore Fink's model for course design, which integrates situational factors, learning goals, learning activities, and assessment. We will also address how to choose face-to-face and online activities to create an engaging learning experience, provide direct instruction, and facilitate active, collaborative learning. Dialogue on Race, Class, and the Zimmerman Trial

First Covenant Church Committee on Racial & Economic Justice Presents:

Faith and Justice: A Community Dialogue on Race, Class, and the Zimmerman Trial

Date: Sunday, July 21
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: First Covenant Church, 810 S. 7th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415

This event is free and open to the public. Youth are also strongly encouraged to attend.

The recently announced "not guilty" verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial has had a ripple effect throughout the country. Issues at the intersection of race, class, and social justice are at the heart of discussions surrounding the Zimmerman trial and the untimely death of Trayvon Martin. In order to promote healthy race relations and justice, it is important to create safe space in the community for open, honest, and sometimes painful dialogue on race, privilege, and power.

First Covenant Church seeks to be a diverse, multi-generational, urban Christian community that is a place of learning and transformation for all kinds of people. It is in that spirit that we are convening a community forum where persons of all backgrounds are invited to take part in the conversation and to identify next steps in bringing healing, reconciliation, justice and equality for all people. The forum will include a panel discussion, candid community dialogue, and inter-faith prayer.

Confirmed Panelists include:
*Rev. Richard H. Coleman, Executive Director, Hope United CDC
*Dr. Christena Cleveland, Social Psychologist
*Antonio Winston, Brotherhood, Inc. Participant
*Rev. Dr. Paula B. Nordhem, United Church of Christ
*Bill Keatts, Co-founder, Discussions that Encounter, Saint Olaf Catholic Church
*Chris Stewart, Executive Director, African American Leadership Forum
*Dr. Nancy Heitzeg, Professor of Sociology & Race/Ethnicity, St. Kate's University

For questions, contact Nekima Levy-Pounds at nvlevypounds@stthomas.edu or 612-210-3734. Event co-sponsors include Brotherhood Brew Coffee, Discussions that Encounter, African American Leadership Forum, Hope United Community Development Corp., and the Community Justice Project of the Univ. of St. Thomas Law School.

Farmers Market Starts Tuesday

West Bank Farmers Markets

Tuesdays
Augsburg Foss Chapel - 11-1 p.m.
Brian Coyle Community Center - 2-5 p.m.

It's finally happening - After weeks of delays due to a cold, wet spring, the West Bank Farmers Market is set to start next Tuesday, July 23. Normally we start the first Tuesday of July but we have had to find new farmers and wait until our previous ones were ready to start.

This year to start, we're welcoming back See and Shoua Vang's family and Campus Kitchen will sell oils, honeys, breads, and some new local products. We are excited to introduce a new family who will sell with us - Maly and Malia Thao, second year Auggies, and their family. They already have tomatoes to sell (normally not big news in July but especially exciting this year).

If you have any questions or ideas before we start, please let us know, and we look forward to seeing you at the market soon!

Host Families for Asian Exchange Students

We are looking for host families for a group of high school exchange students from Japan, China, and Thailand for this school year. Families can commit to one semester or a full academic year. Host families provide room and board, companionship, and transportation to school (student may take a school bus or public transportation if available).

Exchange students are 15-18 years old and speak English well enough to communicate with their host family and enroll in a regular schedule of classes. Students come with spending money for personal expenses and comprehensive health insurance provided by the program. Students also pay for their own school expenses, including activity fees, school supplies, and school lunches. A local coordinator in your area will provide support to you and your exchange student, and TLI also has bilingual emergency phone support available 24 hours a day.

We are hoping to identify host families for all of the students this week, because they are scheduled to depart their home countries for an orientation program in Seattle in just two weeks.
