Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Severe Weather Week: Monday: Know the Terminology

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK
Minnesota participates in Severe Weather Awareness Week during April 15-19th. Please review the information posted each day to be prepared for severe weather this Spring and learn how to keep yourself and our campus community safe.

Please review the Public Safety Emergency Procedures Guidebook at: http://web.augsburg.edu/dps/EmergencyManual.pdf Hard copies are available for pick up at the Public Safety Dispatch Center in the Urness/Mortensen Lobby

MONDAY: Alerts & Warnings – Know the terminology

Advisory
An advisory is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, imminent or likely. Advisories are for less serious conditions than warnings that cause significant inconvenience and if caution is not exercised, could lead to situations that may threaten life or property.

Watch
A watch means weather conditions are favorable for dangerous weather to occur. In other words, a "watch" means watch out for what the weather could do, and be ready to act accordingly. You may wish to alter or have a back-up plan for any outdoor activities or travel.
For events that come and go quickly, such as severe thunderstorms, tornadoes or flash floods, a watch means that the odds are good for the dangerous weather, but it's not yet happening.
When a severe thunderstorm, tornado or flash flood watch is in effect, it means you should look for signs of dangerous weather and maintain access to the latest information. Sometimes a severe thunderstorm, tornado or flash flood can happen so quickly that warnings can't be issued in time.
For longer-lived events, such as floods or winter storms, a watch means that the event isn't an immediate threat. For either kind of event, a watch means you should keep up with the weather news and be ready to act.
A winter storm watch means it's time to prepare by stocking up on emergency supplies and making sure you know what to do if a warning is issued.

Warnings
For severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash floods, a warning means the weather event is imminent or occurring somewhere in the defined warning area and that people need to take shelter as soon as possible.
Outdoor tornado warnings are normally given by sirens. People indoors should listen to radios, TV or Weather Radio warnings to find out the latest information. Depending on local policy, other types of weather warnings may also broadcast via sirens. Check with local emergency management officials to learn about local siren activations.
A winter storm warning means it's not safe to travel or venture outside. If traveling, head for the nearest shelter.

Augsburg Alerts: Emergency Notification System:

All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register for Augsburg Alerts, an emergency notification system operated by Augsburg College. Augsburg Alerts is an electronic communications tool to communicate timely information regarding active emergencies or weather closures via text message, voice mail, and/or e-mail to registered personal cell phones, landlines, or personal e-mail addresses.

Augsburg Alerts only will be used to communicate important information related to weather closings, or during an active emergency, to help individuals make sound decisions about their personal safety. Examples of
situations in which Augsburg Alerts may be used could include natural weather events that lead to an
unscheduled closing of the College, or for emergency situations such as a gas leak, fire, bomb threat, active
shooter, power failure, or other event. Augsburg Alerts will NOT be used to notify the community of things
such as enrollment deadlines, sporting events, or other non-emergency information.

Staff Development Series

Communicating Effectively using (LinkedIn) Technology

RSVP link http://augsburg.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_b2gIAJpSOXPNjoN

April 16th, 2013
8-9:30am
SVE 201

In this hands-on session, attendees will learn what LinkedIn is and what it is used for. You'll learn how to use LinkedIn for your own professional development and networking, and have time in the computer lab to create or enhance your profile and understand what considerations to take into account when deciding what information to include on your profile. Attendees will explore how to use LinkedIn to support Augsburg College students indirectly through joining groups and sharing expertise, and directly by connecting, endorsing and writing recommendations. The group also will explore best practices and social media etiquette, how recruiters (like Augsburg!) are using LinkedIn to search for qualified applicants, and how your overall social media and digital footprint is viewed by others

About the facilitators: Steff Weiss is a social media guru who works in Marketing and Communication, and Ana Eliason helps students with tools such as LinkedIn in her work at the Strommen Center.

Native American Literature Class For Fall 2013

Native American Literature Class Fall 2013: ENG 355 Topics in American Indian Literature: Native Voices of and in Minnesota

Come explore the exciting world of Native American Literature every Wednesday night from 6-9:30. The theme of this course is Native Voices of and in Minnesota. We will be reading works by American Indian authors either living in, originating from, or whose work is set in Minnesota. In all cases their work explores the issues of identity, land, and migration/movement across physical and political borders. Because American Indian literature does not exist in isolation from the experiences of Native peoples, this course also includes analysis of the ways in which the authors' works reflect and illuminate American Indian culture, traditions, and interaction with non-Native groups. Students will focus on primary texts, comparing and contrasting these themes and the voices, aesthetic styles, and cultural emphases of the authors.

This course fulfills AIS and ENL credit as well as general education credits. For more information contact M. Elise Marubbio at marubbio@augsburg.ed or 330-1523
