Staff Development Series- Leading and Participating in Effective Meetings

About the Session:

During this session participants will engage in identifying characteristics of effective meetings and discuss specific strategies about leading effectively in a variety of meeting types, including goal setting, agenda building, engaging participants and following up after meetings. Participants will explore the similarities and differences between effective leadership and participation in meeting settings.

About the Facilitators:

Scott Krajewski serves Augsburg College as the Director of IT Services. In that role he directs the staff that create and manage the IT support experience for faculty, staff and students. In addition he works with many departments across campus on IT-related projects.

Amy Gort serves Augsburg College as the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Arts and Sciences. In that role, she works with several academic departments and faculty relating to curriculum, course scheduling, faculty hiring, and assessment of student learning. In addition, she works with academic staff in the areas of the library, the Gage Center for Student Success, grant-funded programs, undergraduate research, and Career and Internship Services.

Interdisciplinary Programs Working Group Today

The next meeting of the working group on Interdisciplinary programs meets today at 3:40 in OGC 200. This is a follow-on discussion from the Commission on Academic Opportunities that is exploring new ways to provide innovative, applied, interdisciplinary learning experiences for our students. Meetings are open to anyone wishing to join the conversation, which will result in a report going to the Dean at the end of this term.

CTL Summer Scholarship Grants

Applications due March 15
Applications should be submitted online at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/summer-scholarship-application/

The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2013. All tenured or tenure-track, full-time faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply.

Three $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2013. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Please complete the online Summer Scholarship application form (available at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/summer-scholarship-application/) describing the project, explaining its potential significance, summarizing the work already accomplished, providing a timetable and plan for completion, explaining how it will accelerate project completion, and describing how it fits with your department's definition of scholarship. Submit a curriculum vitae (pdf document, please) as an email attachment to ctl@augsburg.edu. Applications should be submitted no later than March 15, 2013.

Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April. All grant recipients must submit a progress report by September 1, 2013. Recipients of the Dean's Scholarship Grant must submit a short final report by February 1, 2014.

Dean's Internationalization Grant

Applications due February 15

The purpose of the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant is to support collaborations with our international programs and partners that will help internationalize scholarship, teaching, and service at Augsburg College. The expectation is that recipients will develop relationships with others in the Augsburg international partner network, identify opportunities for collaboration, and develop a plan to implement at least one of these opportunities.

Two Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grants of up to $2500 are awarded to full-time faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaborations with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitate internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Submit proposals using the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant application (available at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/deans-internationalization-application/ ). Proposals will include a description of the collaboration, explanation of how it will facilitate internationalization of the campus or curriculum, and an outline of the tasks you intend to accomplish. Applications are due February 15, 2013 for travel during Summer 2013; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee and Vice President of International Programs and announced in early March.

In Sacred Ground, author and renowned interfaith leader and last semester's Christensen Convocation speaker Eboo Patel says this prejudice is not just a problem for Muslims but a challenge to the very idea of America. Patel shows us that Americans from George Washington to Martin Luther King Jr. have been "interfaith leaders," illustrating how the forces of pluralism in America have time and again defeated the forces of prejudice. And now a new generation needs to rise up and confront the anti-Muslim prejudice of our era. To this end, Patel offers a primer in the art and science of interfaith work, bringing to life the growing body of research on how faith can be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division and sharing stories from the frontlines of interfaith activism.

Most people want to be successful in life. And of course, everyone wants to be happy. When it comes to the pursuit of success and happiness, most people assume the same formula: if you work hard, you will become successful, and once you become successful, then you'll be happy. The only problem is that a decade of cutting-edge research in the field of positive psychology has proven that this formula is backwards. Success does not beget happiness. Shawn Achor shares seven core principles of positive psychology that each one of us can use to improve our performance, grow our careers, and gain a competitive edge at work. He reveals how happiness actually fuels success and performance, not the other way around. Why? TFAPS – Hybrid Learning Implementation

All faculty are invited to participate in two workshops offered by CTL and IT to support weekend and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14. If you are satisfied with the basic design of your courses, you only need to participate in the Moodle Labs to learn best practices for online learning and how to meet GAAC/AAC requirements for hybrid learning.

If you would like to improve the underlying design of your courses, you will also benefit from the integrated course design workshop.

Prerequisite: Please watch the screencasts in the Overview section of the Course Design Support Site (http://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodle2013/course/view.php?id=35) before coming to these sessions.

Moodle Lab for Hybrid Learning.
The Moodle Labs are hands-on workshops that introduce and support development of your Moodle sites. These workshops are held on:

The Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning is a hands-on workshop that explores Fink's model for course design, which integrates situational factors, learning goals, learning activities, and assessment. It addresses how to choose face-to-face and online activities to create an engaged learning community, provide direct instruction, and facilitate active, collaborative learning. Nominations Open for 2012 Outstanding Staff Awards

Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the 2012 Augsburg College Outstanding Staff Awards. This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions.

To be considered for this award, the nominee must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

Pink Zone Weekend

This weekend, the Augsburg College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be hosting its winter Pink Zone Weekend. This event helps raise money and awareness to support the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation and the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink at Augsburg's four home athletic events this weekend.

The Auggie women's hockey team kicks off the weekend off with a home game against Bethel University on Friday (2/8) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink. On Saturday, the Auggie men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting a doubleheader against St. Olaf College at Si Melby Hall. The women are scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by 3 p.m. tip-off for the men's team. The weekend will conclude with an Auggie men's hockey game against Bethel at 7:05 p.m., at Ed Saugestad Rink.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be selling breast cancer awareness t-shirts, putting on half-time contests, providing educational materials and accepting donations, with all proceeds going to support the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation.

Mardi Gras Madrigals—10th anniversary! 2/12, 6:30 p.m.

]Huzzah! It's time once again for Mardi Gras Madrigals! This is the midwinter party you cannot miss. Come celebrate with the Goliard Society of Medievalists.

As always, there will be a full medieval feast—eaten with your hands. This year, the internationally acclaimed early music group The Rose Ensemble will return to Mardi Gras Madrigals. We also have special guests: the Renaissance Quartet, a juggling troupe from Edina High School. There will be lots of goofiness, buffoonery, and, of course, beautiful music from invited high school choirs and Augsburg students and alums. Don't miss it!

Mardi Gras Madrigals takes place on Tuesday, February 12 in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30pm. Box office opens at 6pm. Tickets are $20. Augsburg students get in free, but you must still make a reservation.

Scripps Spelling Bee – 1 More Volunteer Needed

Augsburg College is excited to host the 2013 Minnesota Seven County Metro Area Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 in Hoversten Chapel. Fifty 4th-8th grade students will be competing for a chance to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. and we are looking for volunteer judges to participate in the event! You will be asked to arrive on campus at 11:30 AM. The event ending time is dependent upon the number of elimination rounds, but is likely to conclude prior to or by 6 PM. Lunch will be provided. The positions needing to be filled are:

1 audio judge to work with AV guy if we need to recall a spelled word. Can be Augsburg staff, faculty or students.

This month, URGO will be hosting two information sessions to highlight the exciting and prestigious academic programs funded by the Fulbright Foundation (both programs will be discussed at each session):

Fulbright Student Program: Students spend a year abroad after college 1) teaching English 2) attending graduate school or 3) conducting a research project. Seeking juniors & seniors.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes: Students spend 3-6 weeks studying a particular issue at a UK university. Seeking freshmen & sophomores.
