Sabo Scholar Applications
SABO SCHOLARS/SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE for 5 students who will be Juniors in 2013-14. Recipients will demonstrate an interest and commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy issues and careers in public service. Each Sabo Scholar receives a $2,000 scholarship [divided equally between the 2 semesters].
Expectations of Sabo Scholars include collaborating with Representative Martin Sabo, Sabo Professor Garry Hesser, and Senior Faculty Fellows to identify and create opportunities for Augsburg students to engage more fully in public policy issues, the political process and exploring career in public service. In addition, the Sabo Scholars help to shape the present endeavors and future direction of the Sabo Center. The Scholars meet monthly with Representative Sabo, Sabo Professor Hesser, Sr. Fellows and local alums and persons engaged in public service, policy-related work and the political process. The deadline for application is February 22.

Spanish Conversation Meets Thursday
Ready to practice your Spanish?
Looking for a place to chat in Spanish and meet new people? We've got just the thing for you - Spanish conversation group! All language levels are welcome to join us for laughs and interesting conversation as we practice speaking in a relaxed and friendly setting.
We meet every Thursday from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Riverside Room, 2nd fl. of the Christensen Center. Signs will be posted. Drop in at any time and stay for as long as you like. We promise there will be no grammar lessons! You are welcome to bring your lunch.

Scholastic Connections Applications Now Available
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, and Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5,000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color that serves as mentor for the Scholar.
Five "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2013-14.
Eligibility Criteria:
Current Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated financial need
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
Demonstrated community involvement on or off campus
GPA of 2.0 or higher

Nominations Open for 2012 Outstanding Staff Awards
Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the 2012 Augsburg College Outstanding Staff Awards. This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions.
To be considered for this award, the nominee must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

Internship Opportunity in China for Augsburg Grads
Internship Opportunity in China for 2013 Grads and Alums
The United International College (UIC), Augsburg's partner college in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates for a one year teaching internship with undergraduate students. Graduates in any discipline may apply. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities.
Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Internships are available in the following academic departments: English Language Centre; Teaching English as a Second Language; English Literature; Computer Science and Technology; Applied Psychology; Business and Administration; and Public Relations & Advertising. Ally Trainings are offered for all faculty, staff, and students at Augsburg College to gain knowledge, skills, and resources around being intentionally supportive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) communities. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask questions in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg.

TODAY - Medical Scribe Information Session
URGO will be hosting an information session today on medical scribing with an emergency department scribing agency from here in the Twin Cities. A scribe is a medical documentation specialist who works with an emergency department physician to produce medical notes recording what occurs during a patient's visit. The scribe is directly involved in patient interviews and physical exams and continues as an integral part of the treatment team throughout the patient's stay in the emergency department. Many students applying for medical school or other health-related fields have found scribing to be a great learning experience.

Day at the Capitol Event
On March 21, Augsburg students will have the opportunity to attend the Day at the Capitol event. This is a day-long experience in which Augsburg will send students to the Capitol in order to meet representatives and learn about topics such as political activism and finance policy.
A primary purpose of this event is to encourage the Minnesota State Government to continue funding the State Grant Program, which provides $3 million annually in financial aid to Augsburg students. Transportation and lunch are provided free of charge. Additionally, participants will be exempt from classes during the entire day. Come to the event to engage in the political community, practice student activism, and protect your financial aid!
A Reading by MFA Mentor Jack El-Hai
Augsburg MFA-Creative Writing Nonfiction Mentor Jack El-Hai will read from his work on January 31 in the Admissions Lounge, ground floor of the Christensen Center. The reading is sponsored by the Augsburg Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Lost Minnesota and The Lobotomist will be for sale, and Jack will be available to sign books.
Jack El-Hai is a writer of literary journalism and creative nonfiction. His books include The Nazi and the Psychiatrist (Public Affairs, forthcoming), Turbulent Air: A History of Northwest Airlines (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming), and The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness (Wiley, and Lost Minnesota. The Lobotomist is currently in production as a TV series pilot for HBO and was previously adapted as a PBS American Experience television documentary.
Jack's newest project, The Nazi and The Psychiatrist is slated for publication by Public Affairs Books and has recently been optioned for stage and screen by Mythology Entertainment. The book explores the complex relationship between American psychiatrist Dr. Douglas M. Kelley and Nazi war criminal and Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Goering. It is the first to access Kelley's personal and professional papers from the Nuremberg Trial years, which the shrink's family had hidden away for years.
Jack's essays and articles have appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, Scientific American Mind, The History Channel Magazine, American Heritage, and The Saturday Evening Post. Winner of a Minnesota Book Award and a McKnight Artist Fellowship, he is a past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Bennington College and an undergraduate degree in English from Carleton College.
