Nominations Open for 2012 Outstanding Staff Awards

Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the 2012 Augsburg College Outstanding Staff Awards. This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions.

To be considered for this award, the nominee must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

* At least 2 letters of recommendation

Book Reading by MFA-Creative Writing Mentor

Augsburg MFA-Creative Writing Nonfiction Mentor Jack El-Hai will read from his work on January 31 in the Admissions Lounge, ground floor of the Christensen Center. The reading is sponsored by the Augsburg Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Jack El-Hai is a writer of literary journalism and creative nonfiction. His books include The Nazi and the Psychiatrist (Public Affairs, forthcoming), Turbulent Air: A History of Northwest Airlines (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming), and The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness (Wiley). The Lobotomist is currently in production as a TV series pilot for HBO and was previously adapted as a PBS American Experience television documentary.

Jack's newest project, The Nazi and The Psychiatrist is slated for publication by PublicAffairs Books and has recently been optioned for stage and screen by Mythology Entertainment. The book explores the complex relationship between American psychiatrist Dr. Douglas M. Kelley and Nazi war criminal and Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Goering. It is the first to access Kelley's personal and professional papers from the Nuremberg Trial years, which the shrink's family had hidden away for years.

Jack's essays and articles have appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, Scientific American Mind, The History Channel Magazine, American Heritage, and The Saturday Evening Post. Winner of a Minnesota Book Award and a McKnight Artist Fellowship, he is a past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Bennington College and an undergraduate degree in English from Carleton College.

LGBTQIA Ally Trainings are being offered this semester for all students, staff, and faculty:

Wednesday, February 13, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Marshall Room

Ally Trainings are offered for all faculty, staff, and students at Augsburg College to gain knowledge, skills, and resources around being intentionally supportive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) communities. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask questions in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg.

WEC Health Fair

CCHP invites all interested WEC students to a mini health fair on Saturday 1/12/13 from 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. in the OGC Atrium. Several community resource agencies will be available as well as free chair massages, therapy dogs, food, and more.
