Double Your Turkeys and Help the New Foodshelf

It's Thanksgiving and Give to the Max Time. Campus Kitchen and Finnegan's Beer/Community Fund are teaming up for some great opportunities to make a difference in the community:

- Each Thanksgiving, Campus Kitchen serves hundreds of turkey dinners in the neighborhood, and to make that happen we need to gather the ingredients and funds. If you and your colleagues would like to contribute to a particular item, please let us know. We'll be making turkey, potatoes, stuffing, squash, and some pumpkin pie. Fill out this quick form here: www.augsburg.edu/campuskitchen/signup to indicate what you'd like to contribute. We'll be collecting items in the Christensen Center lobby on November 15 and 16 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

- We'll need money to buy what we don't gather, and this year, we're one of Finnegan's Beer/Community Fund's Three Small Pints, so they'll be matching what we raise up to $1,500 on November 15. Donate then, or click the "schedule one for Give to the Max Day" to donate now so that it will be counted on November 15.

- Any donations above the cost of our Thanksgiving meals will be used buy food for the upcoming Augsburg College Student Food Shelf, helping students in need stay well fed.

- We'll be running a few special shifts to make all the meals happen. Our biggest event of the year is the Multicultural Dinner at the Brian Coyle Community Center on November 16 from 5-7 p.m. Sign up for any of the week's activities at www.augsburg.edu/campuskitchen/signup or if you don't have a ton of time, please just drop in to eat. Where else can you dine on Somali, Korean, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Mexican, and "Pilgrim" food together under one roof.

- And lastly, if you'd like to celebrate a successful Give to the Max Day (Minnesota's giant one-day fundraiser), you can join the us and the whole Finnegan's crew at Stanley's (2500 University Avenue Northeast) on Thursday the 15th from 5-7 p.m. for 75 cent pints of Finnegans (the charitable and delicious brew company that donates 100% of profits to feeding the hungry - www.finnegans.org).

One of Our Own Won the Oscar of Teaching

Greetings,

It is always a great day to see one of our own win the Oscar of teaching, the Milken Foundation Award for early to mid career leadership in the field.

Stephen Abenth completed his student teaching at the same school (Highland Park Elementary School) he is currently teaching with. He finished on a Friday and was hired as a classroom teacher that Monday within the St. Paul school district. A talented teacher from the beginning with a clear love of student's learning and a bag full of personal, musical, technology and teaching skill and knowledge to fully engage students in fun learning. Congratulations to him on his achievement! Stephen is the fifth Auggie to win the Milken Award.

ASAC Month-Long Food Drive

ASAC is partnering up with Second Land Harvest for a month-long food drive. We want to see how much we can raise as a community for the month of November! We have placed three bins around campus for non-perishable food items. The bins are located: 1) In Christensen Center in front of the Strommen Center; 2) In the Chapel in front of the Campus Ministry Office; and 3) In OGC nearby Nabo. If each student donated at least one item, we could end up making a huge difference in the community!

Vocatio Chapel and Lunch - Tomorrow

"Faith and the Imagination: the Call to the Arts",

Our guest this Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 10:20 a.m. is Jeremiah Gamble, and he has a great story of connecting his faith with his love for theater. Together with his wife, he has created "Theater for the Thirsty"– specializing in entertaining, music-infused, funny, thought-provoking, redemptive, soul stirring and imaginative theater. They have been developing and performing original works, professionally, for over fifteen years.

During Wednesday's chapel, Jeremiah will be performing an excerpt from his original one man play, The Rough and the Holy.

Following chapel, there will be a luncheon for conversation with Jeremiah Gamble. To attend, RSVP to Lonna Field at fieldl@augsburg.edu by November 13.

Cognition and Music Presentation on Friday

On Friday, November 16, at 4:00 p.m. in OGC 200 the Psychology Department is hosting a presentation by Dr. Michael Schutz who is currently Assistant Professor of Music Cognition/Percussion at McMaster University. His presentation is titled "Music: a multi-sensory experience." A short abstract about his presentation is below.

Why do we buy concert tickets when the same sounds can be heard more cheaply and comfortably within our own homes? Why do popular music concerts include elaborate lighting and staging effects for what is ostensibly an auditory event? Why can't orchestral musicians wear T-shirts and flip-flops? Clearly, both watching musicians play and "moving to the beat" while listening to are common behaviors— but why do these actions play such a crucial role in music "listening"? My talk will explore this issue through the context of two projects exploring the multi-sensory nature of the musical experience. The first is a novel musical illusion in which musicians use visible gestures to change the way music "sounds." Some expert performers capitalize on the fact that although these gestures have no acoustic consequences, they are crucial in shaping the way in which audiences perceive performances. The second is a new line of research exploring how "moving to the beat" can actually help audience's listen more accurately. Together, these projects raise interesting philosophical questions about what music "is" and how it is best experienced. For a preview this research, please visit the MAPLE Lab media coverage page at http://maplelab.net/media/media-archive.

URGO Summer Research Info Sessions Wed. and Thurs.

URGO will be hosting two information sessions this week about paid summer research opportunities for undergraduate students. Research is not only a great summer job, but it also allows you to explore a topic you are interested in, develop skills in your field, and build a professional relationship with a faculty mentor.

Here on campus, the URGO Summer Research Program provides a 10-week research experience where students are paid to join a faculty member's on-going research/creative line or carry out an individually-designed project. Off campus, many universities host similar research programs that are open to students from around the country. Come learn about these exciting opportunities and how to build a strong application at one of the following information sessions:

Wednesday, November 14 at 12 p.m.
Riverside Room in Christiansen Center

or

Thursday, November 15 at 12 p.m.
OGC 100

Snacks will be provided!

If you have any questions regarding the sessions or summer research opportunities, please contact Kirsten O'Brien at obrienk@augsburg.edu or stop by the URGO office in 152 Science Hall.
