Youth-led Community Organizing

YFM205: Youth-led Community Organizing Do you value the voice of youth? Do you believe they have a lot to offer? Would you like to learn how to empower young people to make positive change in their communities? If so, then this class is for you.

In this 0.5 credit course we will study and experience the history, theory, and practice of youth-led community organizing. This course is listed under the Spring semester Religion courses but is not a course about religious youth work. It is open to all students with an interest in working with youth of any background.

It will meet MWF 9:10 a.m. - 10:10 a.m. from January 14-March 1. Contact Professor Jeremy Myers (myers@augsburg.edu) with any questions.

Community Reading Circle

Seth Godin's Linchpin: An Unsettling Call to Be Indispensable
Community Building Series for all faculty and staff

In our society linchpins are those individuals that hold things together. Yes, organizations might succeed or thrive for a while without them, but eventually as pressure is applied and structures are tested, things will fall apart. Godin clearly illustrates that we are in a critical time in history when a new breed of worker and leader are required. We need linchpins to solve our problems, keep us connected, and inspire us with art. People who are linchpins are creative, good at connecting with others, and able to see solutions like no one else. They truly are indispensable.
As Seth Godin explains this concept to his readers, he turns their minds upside down in order to convince them that they are in some way capable of being one. He explains how we got here, criticizing the public education system for creating cogs to fill factories and consumers to buy what they produce. He argues that we get exactly what we focus on. In the end we wind-up with drones that do what they are told.

There is no shortage of pundits today that criticize the flaws of our education system, but few will offer a solution. He challenges teachers to inspire student to think instead of follow rule books and ace tests. He even goes as far as telling us to give ourselves a D for the rut we have fallen into.

Linchpin could be Mr. Godin's greatest work so far. He treats the subject with history and sociology as well as a compelling mix of fact, story and philosophy. Using examples that will both shock and inspire, Linchpin leaves you feeling like you have no choice but to reassess your current situation and make the changes he so eloquently urges us toward.

This session is offered in two parts, and will make use of the StrengthsFinder assessment available with the book Strengths Based Leadership. You may attend both parts, or only the one that is most applicable to you - your choice!

Part 1 is intended for first time completers of the StrengthsFinder assessment, and for those who have previously completed the assessment and would like a refresher. Engage with your assessment results and explore ways to apply your strengths at work.

Part 2 is intended for those who have previously attended a Using your Strengths at Work session. Explore the StrengthsFinder concepts in more depth and discuss further application.

CTL has a limited number of copies of Strengths Based Leadership (which includes the StrengthsFinder assessment) available for attendees who have not previously completed the assessment. Gift cards for Kindle editions are also available.

About the Facilitator:
Velma Lashbrook is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies. She believes that understanding your strengths is essential for understanding how you can best contribute and exercise leadership. She uses strengths based approaches in several of her graduate classes and has led strengths-based workshops for Augsburg, business, and professional audiences.

Thanksgiving, Food Shelf, 75 Cent Pints

It's Thanksgiving and Give to the Max Time and Campus Kitchen and Finnegan's Beer/Community Fund are teaming up for some great opportunities to make a difference in the community:

- Each Thanksgiving, Campus Kitchen serves hundreds of turkey dinners in the neighborhood, and to make that happen we need to gather the ingredients and funds. If you and your colleagues would like to contribute to a particular item, please let us know. We'll be making turkey, potatoes, stuffing, squash, and some pumpkin pie. Fill out this quick form here: www.augsburg.edu/campuskitchen/signup to indicate what you'd like to contribute. We'll be collecting items in the Christensen Center lobby on November 15 and 16 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

- We'll need money to buy what we don't gather, and this year, we're one of Finnegan's Beer/Community Fund's Three Small Pints, so they'll be matching what we raise up to $1,500 on November 15. Donate then, or click the "schedule one for Give to the Max Day" to donate now so that it will be counted on November 15.

- Any donations above the cost of our Thanksgiving meals will be used buy food for the new Augsburg College Student Food Shelf, helping students in need stay well fed.

- We'll be running a few special shifts to make all the meals happen. Our biggest event of the year is the Multicultural Dinner at the Brian Coyle Community Center on November 16 from 5-7 p.m. Sign up for any of the week's activities at www.augsburg.edu/campuskitchen/signup or if you don't have a ton of time, please just drop in to eat. Where else can you dine on Somali, Korean, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Mexican, and "Pilgrim" food together under one roof.

- And lastly, if you'd like to celebrate a successful Give to the Max Day (Minnesota's giant one-day fundraiser), you can join the us and the whole Finnegan's crew at Stanley's (2500 University Avenue Northeast) on Thursday the 15th from 5-7 p.m. for 75 cent pints of Finnegans (the charitable and delicious brew company that donates 100% of profits to feeding the hungry - www.finnegans.org).

2013 Annual Benefit Enrollment

This message is intended for all benefit-eligible faculty and staff. All regular faculty and staff working .50 (3/6) full-time equivalency (FTE) or greater are considered benefit eligible.

Annual benefit enrollment is from Wednesday, November 7 through Wednesday, November 21. All forms must be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21. You may drop your forms off in the HR office (Memorial Hall, Room 19) or fax to 612-330-1443.

In the past, we have mailed an updated benefit booklet to your home. However, in keeping with the College's cost saving and green initiatives, we will not be mailing you a copy of the booklet. A link to the electronic copy of the booklet is contained below.

*Please remember that you must make your flexible spending account and health savings account elections every year. Your election from last year WILL NOT carry over into 2013. You must complete the universal enrollment form to make your election for 2013.*

Thanks for a Successful HFA Convocation

Thanks to everyone who helped with the Humanities and Fine Arts Convocation, especially Leslie and her crew in Event Services! Dan Phillips of the Phoenix Commotion spoke to a crowd of about 350 at the main convo. The Augsburg Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Matt Barber, provided the pre-show music: banging out an awesome drum piece on metal trash cans!

Thanks to Aviands, Dan also had a nice lunch and lively conversation with about 15 interested folks immediately following the convo. Dan also spoke to art students in Robert Tom's and Kris Holmgren's courses, and to some of Bruce Batten's MBA social entrepreneurship students. Kim Stone from Alumni Relations also got some Auggie MBA alums to show up for that meeting. Dan covered a lot of ground in two days on campus. He also spoke very highly of everything he learned about the college, from our art courses to our environmental initiatives.

Last but not least, congratulations to Kacie Lucchini, Maly Thao, and Erika Johnsrud, all of whom successfully constructed an origami phoenix out of their recycled and re-purposed convocation programs and handed it in by the deadline. Each will receive a copy of the forthcoming book about Dan's work, "Resurrecting Trash: Dan Phillips and the Phoenix Commotion". Congrats!

URGO will be hosting two information sessions this week about paid summer research opportunities for undergraduate students. Research is not only a great summer job, but it also allows you to explore a topic you are interested in, develop skills in your field, and build a professional relationship with a faculty mentor.

Here on campus, the URGO Summer Research Program provides a 10-week research experience where students are paid to join a faculty member's on-going research/creative line or carry out an individually-designed project. Off campus, many universities host similar research programs that are open to students from around the country. Come learn about these exciting opportunities and how to build a strong application at one of the following information sessions:

"Faith and the Imagination: The Call to the Arts"

Guest: Jeremiah Gamble, Theater for the Thirsty

Jeremiah Gamble does many things. Sometimes, too many things. He's a full-time dad, writer, performer, producer, musician, teacher, and noodler. He co-founded Theater for the Thirsty in 1998 with his wife, Vanessa. Together they portray over 100 different characters in their ten original shows. He teaches playwrighting at Northwestern College, is member of the Dramatist Guild and has produced critically acclaimed works at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. He and Vanessa make their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with their kids: Phoenicia, Eden and Obadiah. Together they create music, theater, laughter, and some pretty tasty chicken curry.

During this chapel, Jeremiah will be performing an excerpt from his original one man play, The Rough and the Holy. It's an engaging, honest, and emotionally charged production discovering the life of Jesus, "the friend of sinners." Jeremiah's physical style of theater fleshes out real people from the Gospel accounts in a creative, powerful and sometimes humorous way.

Need a Ride Home for Christmas? (MN to PA)

If you live in any of the states on the way to Philadelphia, PA (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA), and don't feel like paying for a plane ticket (they are SOOOO expensive!), I am already driving through your home state and would like at least one other person to make the long drive (or at least part of it) with.

I will make the trip in 2 days stopping over night in Chicago, IL. Dates of departure from Minneapolis as well as from Philadelphia on the way back are flexible right now - I'll work with whoever would like to carpool with me to figure out more concrete dates.

I have a family that willingly opens their home to travelers for free in Chicago, so there is no hotel cost or anything like that. I'll drive and all I ask is for a little gas money compensation (any little bit helps-and it's WAY cheaper than airfare).
