Lot J Closed Beginning Monday, Oct. 29

Lot J (behind Music/Foss) will be closed beginning October 29. It will continue to be closed until the completion of the tear down work of Murphy Place--2 weeks or more. Please utilize the other faculty/staff parking lots on campus: Lots D, G, and L.

Lot J has a considerable amount of handicap parking. Temporary handicap spaces will be posted in Lot K. If you have specific concerns regarding access to handicap parking during this time, please contact parking@augsburg.edu

Space Heaters

The Facilities Department has announced in past A-mail publications how we will approach the management of heating and cooling temperatures and energy management, in general, going forward.

During the heating season, our goal is to maintain heat levels in the buildings at 68 degrees F. During the cooling season, we will try to maintain temperatures at 76 degrees F. Our goal is to deliver on a commitment and endeavor to provide a consistent, ambient building temperature throughout the campus, reduce energy costs, optimize the campus' EMS [Energy Management System], and comply with fire safety codes.

In the past, portable space heaters have been used throughout the campus to augment cold spots in the distribution of heat within buildings. Using space heaters is highly inefficient, can be a safety hazard, overloads electrical circuits, and is not a good use of the Colleges' resources as the conversion process of electricity to heat in these units is very expensive.

If you have a personal electric heater at work, please take it home before 11.1.12. If you have an electric heater that was obtained with College resources, the Facilities Department staff will be picking those up starting 11.1.12.

If you experience temperatures in your work space that are predominantly out of the ranges stated above, please submit an online work request through the Inside Augsburg Facilities Work Order System to correct the heating or cooling problem.

Crime Alert: Attempted Burglary Luther Hall

October 23, 2012: Attempted Burglary

Public Safety was notified early this morning of an attempted burglary into Luther Hall. Residents were awoken when they heard noise near their window. The residents saw individuals outside of their living room window. When the residents yelled, the suspects ran off. Public Safety notified Minneapolis Police and patrolled the area for suspects. None were found. If you have any information about this crime, please report to Public Safety Dispatch 612-330-1717 or Minneapolis Police 911.

Public Safety, Facilities Management, and Residence Life will be meeting to discuss ways to make windows on the lower level of Luther more secure.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

Immediately report any suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.

Always lock office and residence windows, individual room doors and the suite door whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.

If you misplace or do not have a key, please call x1717 and ask us to come and lock the office/residence. Please wait in the office until we arrive.

Do not prop open doors. If you see a door propped open, close the door and report it to DPS by calling 1717.

Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in a locking drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.

Keep your keys on your person at all times.

Tanzania Combo for MUN and Study Abroad

The Augsburg Student International Negotiating (SIN) Team is pleased to announce that we will be representing the United Republic of Tanzania this year (and also have a spot on one of the "alternate Security Councils," representing Pakistan). Committees will address such topics as Women and Disarmament, Globalization and Economic Justice, Palestine, and Sustainable Urban Planning.

Kilimanjaro).

This session is offered in two parts, and will make use of the StrengthsFinder assessment available with the book Strengths Based Leadership. You may attend both parts, or only the one that is most applicable to you - your choice!

Part 1 is intended for first time completers of the StrengthsFinder assessment, and for those who have previously completed the assessment and would like a refresher. Engage with your assessment results and explore ways to apply your strengths at work.

Part 2 is intended for those who have previously attended a Using your Strengths at Work session. Explore the StrengthsFinder concepts in more depth and discuss further application.

CTL has a limited number of copies of Strengths Based Leadership (which includes the StrengthsFinder assessment) available for attendees who have not previously completed the assessment. Gift cards for Kindle editions are also available.

About the Facilitator:
Velma Lashbrook is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies. She believes that understanding your strengths is essential for understanding how you can best contribute and exercise leadership. She uses strengths based approaches in several of her graduate classes and has led strengths-based workshops for Augsburg, business, and professional audiences.

Used Bike Drive This Friday

Please remember to drop off repairable used bikes at the Sabo Center House (624 21st Ave. S.) anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. this Friday, October 26. All bikes collected will be donated to SPOKES, a non-profit community bicycle and walking resource for the Cedar-Riverside, Seward, and Phillips communities in Minneapolis. The goal of SPOKES is to get more people to use biking and walking for transit, recreation and exercise. SPOKES provides reliable low or no cost bikes, classes, programming, and a space around which to build a diverse and thriving biking and walking community.

Congratulations and thanks go to Joseph Mann, Chad Schneider, and Wendi Wheeler, from the marketing department, who led the conversion project and helped keep the current site up-to-date in the meantime.

Thanks also to marketing team members, Mark Chamberlain, Stephen Geffre, Jen Nagorski, Kathy Rumpza; our talented student worker, Nha Nguyen; and our IT partners, Matt Schornstein, Jim West, and all the liaisons for computing (LFCs). Finally, thank you to the 100+ staff and faculty who have been trained on the new website content management system and have been working to get their sites ready to go live this week. Benefit-eligible staff should take the 4 paid days off on these dates unless it is determined by the manager that the office needs to be open to meet the needs of students. It is expected that certain offices will need to remain open on some or all of these 4 days. Benefit- eligible staff who are required to work the last week of December may take their President's holidays on other work days in December or January, subject to supervisor approval. President's holidays may be determined each year, and may not be granted every year.

Divisional VPs will work with department managers to determine staffing levels and hours of operation. For safety reasons, departments should schedule at least 2 employees to work in the office on days when the office is open. Temporary/stipend employees and student workers are not eligible for paid time off, including President's holidays. As a reminder, President's holidays are a privilege and are not guaranteed. Time granted off in this manner is to be used in full-day increments.

Spanish Conversation Meets this Thursday

Looking for a chance to improve your Spanish conversation skills? Then we've got just the thing for you - Spanish Conversation group!

Please join us as we gather to chat in Spanish, laugh, and have a bit of fun. From beginning to advanced, all levels are welcome. Our aim is to give you a pressure-free place to speak Spanish without grammar lessons. We meet every Thursday in the Riverside Room, 2nd floor Christensen, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Signs will be posted. Join us for 10 minutes or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Feel free to bring your lunch. Join us for 3 sessions and you'll get a free T-shirt.

The Commons will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for Brunch (11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m.) and Dinner (5:00-7:00 p.m.)

Nabo:
Nabo is offering a new meal replacement special, one meal plan meal per week can be used to purchase the special of the day at Nabo from 1:30 p.m. to close. Hot apple cider is now available at Nabo!

The special today is a Crispy BBQ Chicken Sandwich with a chips and a fountain soda.

Einstein's is also now serving Caramel Apple Cider to warm up your autumn! They are also featuring new scones, try a blueberry or cinnamon chip.

The analyst works to ensure accurate collection, management, and reporting of academic affairs data for college reports. The analyst will work collaboratively with institutional research, information technology, accounting, human resources, and other faculty and staff.

Voter ID Amendment Debate Presentation

Students from Augsburg College's Sociology of Law class will be presenting a debate: Minnesota's Voter ID Amendment in Context: Preventing Voter Fraud or Encouraging Voter Suppression? The presentation will feature a brief history of voting in the U.S., other states' voter ID laws, and debate teams representing each side of the issue. Fall Blood Drive Next Tuesday 10/30

CCHP welcomes Memorial Blood Center for its annual fall blood drive to campus on Tuesday 10/30/12 from 10 - 4 p.m. in the East Commons of Christensen Center. Online donation sign-up is now available. Telling Our Stories at the "Common Table"

The American Commonwealth Partnership and Center for Democracy and Citizenship is hosting a "Telling our Story" event highlighting our work as "Citizen Educators" and exploring how that message might resonate with audiences both on and off campus.

We are doing exciting work here, but often don't know what others on campus are up to, and need to educate ourselves about what that work is. This can be a chance to find more opportunities for strengthening and showcasing the kind of collaborative, interdisciplinary, applied projects that we think are at the core of a "Democracy College" and is part of the ongoing work of the Commission on Academic Opportunities.

The open discussion will be held Monday, Oct. 29, from 3-5 p.m. in the "Common Table" (formerly St. Martin's Table) with faculty and students from across the campus, Admissions, Marketing, and Institutional Advancement to hear some of these stories, and brainstorm how to best communicate these to the wider world. A key part of this includes strengthening our connection to the local community, and we will be inviting community groups to join us as well.

We will start with short presentations from a few of the stakeholders (Staff, Students, Faculty, Community), and then move into small group discussion with a mix of staff, students, community members, and faculty in each group, brainstorming and "prototyping" stories that would appeal to and excite current and prospective students and donors. The goal is to leave with both new stories to share with our neighbors and new ways to collaborate in our ongoing work on campus.

The Goliards are having their first event of the year and it will be carving turnips up in Christensen Center in the East Commons. There will also be a short meeting before we start carving.
