Faculty Workshop on Short-term Study Abroad - 10/31
Workshop on Short-term Study Abroad for 2013-14
3:40-5 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 31 in OGC 100
Join faculty and staff from the Office of International Programs for a discussion of how to develop the most educational, greenest, and most affordable experiences for our students, and to hear what people are thinking about for next year. To facilitate collaboration and avoid unnecessary duplication of locations or content, it can also be helpful to know who else is applying and what kind of proposals faculty have in mind.
The goals for the workshop are to:
--learn about the kinds of criteria used to select courses for 2013-14, including which courses tend to get enough enrollment (a perennial challenge)
--hear from attendees what courses /locations you are thinking about proposing, and willingness to consider paired or team-taught courses
--discuss factors affecting cost of the your trip--and ways to keep costs down for students
-- answer questions and explore best practices for proposals for 2013-14; please bring your ideas or any draft proposals if you are interested in getting any initial feedback
The event will be from 3:40-5 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 31 in OGC 100.
Mid-term in the Writing Lab
So far this term, tutors in the Writing Lab have conducted over 400 conferences with students on their writing assignments. Join them. Here are the hours:
Monday: 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3 - 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 5 - 8 p.m.
Please note: The Lab will be closed on Friday, Oct. 26 because of fall break. There will be regular hours on Thursday before break and Sunday, Oct. 28.

Sweet Maladies Auditions
The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for its main stage production, Sweet Maladies, by Zakiyyah Alexander, directed by Dominic Taylor. Auditions will be held in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater in Foss Center, Tuesday, October 23 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, October 24 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. An audition sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the Atrium of the Foss Center.
Casting: 4 female roles
All Augsburg students are welcome to audition! Please choose and carefully prepare two (preferably contemporary) contrasting monologues lasting no longer than two minutes each. Copies of Sweet Maladies have been placed on reserve in the library under the name Dominic Taylor and monologue suggestions are available in the Theater office. It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of the tone of the piece and the nature of the characters.
About the director:
Dominic Taylor's directing projects have included, Fresh Faust, The Negroes Burial Ground, Uppa Creek, Destiny, Ride the Rhythm, The Wiz, Night Train to Bolina, Execution of Justice, and Black Nativity. He has worked as a director and playwright with Penumbra Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, The Public Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Crossroads Theater, Rites and Reasons Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, and Ensemble Studio Theatre, among others. He holds both a Bachelor's and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Brown University. At present he is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota.
Rehearsals will begin Monday, November 19 and performance dates are February 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 and 17.

Hesser Featured Speaker in Several Recent Events
Professor Garry Hesser (Sociology, Metro-Urban Studies, Sabo Center) has been a featured speaker at three recent events.
For the National Society for Experiential Education, Milwaukee (Oct. 3-5), Professor Hesser delivered two talks: "Experiential Education and NSEE: A Walk Through History" and "Strengthening Experiential Education in Your Institution."
Professor Hesser was the Keynote Speaker at the Association of Lutheran College Faculties, Minneapolis. His talk was entitled, "Dewey Was Right: Experiential Learning in the Center Ring."
Finally, Professor Hesser led a Thematic Panel featuring Tom Berg and Martin Sabo ('59) entitled "Minnesota's Miracle: Learning from the Government that Worked" at the Sociologists of Minnesota, Wisconsin Sociological Association, Wisconsin Political Science Association, River Falls, WI, October 11, 2012

Augsburg Participates in Education Minnesota
October 18 marked the start of the two-day annual Education Minnesota Professional Conference at RiverCentre in St. Paul. The conference featured more than 200 exhibitors and Augsburg's booth was one of the first that thousands of visitors saw as they entered the Great Hall. Information was displayed for both currently licensed teachers and those looking to earn an initial teaching license. Endorsement programs were featured including Reading, Preprimary, Special Education and Augsburg's new English as a Second Language program. Each endorsement ties into a master's degree completion option. Several visitors were also seeking to complete an initial teaching license within the framework of Augsburg's WEC program. An abundance of Auggie alums stopped by the booth to touch base and share their career updates.
A Minnesota Orchestra quartet serenaded conference goers in the afternoon as they talked with vendors on all aspects of the latest educational materials and methods. Roughly 40 breakout sessions were held to address topics including engaging disengaged students, homelessness through the eyes of children and the use of digital social portfolios in the classroom.

CCHP Convo Tomorrow
Please join CCHP in welcoming Dr. Henry Emmons to Augsburg for the CCHP convocation entitled "The Science of Hope Blending New Neuroscience and Ancient Wisdom to Sustain a Healthy Mind, Mood and Heart." Dr. Emmons will be on campus from 12 - 1:00 pm on Saturday for his presentation in the Chapel.
Dr. Emmons is a consultant to several area college counseling centers and other organizations. He is the author of the Chemistry of Calm, The Chemistry of Joy and most recently the Chemistry of Joy workbook.
His books will be available for purchase and signing at both convocations. If you have any questions, please call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707.
Flu Shots on Campus Monday
The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion welcomes the MN Visiting Nurse Association to campus on Monday 10/22/12 from 12 - 2 p.m. for anyone wanting to get a flu shot. The clinic will be in the Marshall Room of Christensen Center and no appointment is needed. The clinic is available for all interested students, faculty and staff that may want the convenience of an on-campus opportunity to get your flu shot for the season.
Please bring your insurance card if you want to use your health insurance. Otherwise the cost of the flu shot is $29 payable in cash or by check.

Learn About Health Careers - October 31 at 2:30
Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a physician, physician's assistant, or medical student? Come to a panel discussion featuring an M.D., a P.A. and two medical students. They will provide some background about their particular training and their path into health care. Following their comments there will be a question and answer session.

Used Bike Drive - October 26
Drop off repairable used bikes at the Sabo Center House (624 21st Ave. S.) anytime from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 26. All bikes collected will be donated to SPOKES, a non-profit community bicycle and walking resource for the Cedar-Riverside, Seward, and Phillips communities in Minneapolis. The goal of SPOKES is to get more people to use biking and walking for transit, recreation and exercise. SPOKES provides reliable low or no cost bikes, classes, programming and a space around which to build a diverse and thriving biking and walking community.

Augsburg Staff Present at MCPA Conference
The Minnesota College Personnel Association (MCPA) held its fall conference at Century College and featured many Augsburg staff.
Amanda Erdman, Director of Residence Life, serves as the Past MCPA President, and welcomed conference attendees.
Scott Washburn, StepUP Assistant Director, and student Stephen Bona, presented on "Mentoring Student Leadership in Recovery School Settings."
Michael Grewe, Assistant Director Campus Activities and Orientation/LGBTQIA Service Coordinator served on the conference planning committee and hosted the GLBTQA Commission Roundtable. Michael also presented "Developing LGBTQIA Student Leadership Potential: A Cross-Campus Collaboration."
Joanne Reeck-Irby, Director, Campus Activities and Orientation, presented on "Ethics and Leadership."
Former DPS Director John Pack presented on "Campus Security: Three Challenges, Three Opportunities."
