Open Hearing on Credit Hour
The federal government has issued a mandate that all colleges and universities must be in compliance with guidelines regarding course credit hours. The Higher Learning Commission has established protocols to ensure compliance and a group of Augsburg staff and faculty members (the Task Force on Academic Program Structure) has been meeting this past summer to work on means by which this compliance can be accomplished.
It is important that all faculty and staff members have opportunities to learn about the proposed changes and to discuss the implications of these changes. If you were not able to attend the previous hearings, Faculty Senate and the Task Force invite you to attend one (or both) of these sessions:
Thursday, Oct. 11; 9-10 a.m. in Lindell 301
Monday, Oct. 15; 12-1 p.m. in Sverdrup 102

Vocatio Chapel with Thelma Buckner, Gospel Singer
"Faith and the Imagination: The Call to the Arts"
Vocatio Chapel Welcomes Thelma Buckner, Gospel Musician
Wednesday, October 10, at 10:20 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel
Dr. Thelma Battle-Buckner is a vocal gospel singer, inspirational writer, and community leader. While an employee of the University of Minnesota she majored in nutrition and finance. She received her doctorate degree in Theology and was ordained in 1990. As a devoted and active member of the church, Buckner has played many roles and had many responsibilities. She currently serves as Pastor at Gospel Temple in St. Paul.
While reflecting on her life, Dr. Buckner highlights the following accomplishments and experiences of which she is most pleased. First, she musically trained her eight children. Secondly, the development of Piece By Piece Quilt Shoppe, a community based program for children, which has made and distributed over 1,000 quilts to childcare programs, convalescent centers and homeless people. Also, she authored two books; "Color Coded", which is being re-titled "The Battle", and "You Can't Make Me Doubt Him; A Collection of Real Life Miracles in the Everyday Life of an Everyday Woman" and two theatrical productions: "Gospel In Blues Time"; which debuted at the Ordway Music Theatre with prolific artist Doris Hines, and with sister, Luella Battle-Pittman. The production "From Slavery To Freedom: Let Gospel Ring" with the Minneapolis Gospel Sounds ran at the Minneapolis Crickett and Illusion Theatres.
She feels confident in knowing that her "living will not be in vain" as long as she continues to incorporate the biblical verse Proverbs 3:6, which states that "in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path."
Students, faculty, and staff interested in attending a luncheon with Thelma Buckner should RSVP to Lonna Field at fieldl@augsburg.edu.
One Week Until Seminary and Divinity School Day
The time is almost here for "Wade in the Water", this year's Seminary and Divinity School Day at Augsburg College on Tuesday, October 16.
A link to a poster about the event is available through http://www.augsburg.edu/docs/acfl/2012SemDivDayAugsburg.pdf
Seminary and Divinity School Day is a day when students and alumni from regional colleges and universities have the opportunity to connect with representatives of various top-notch seminary and divinity schools from multiple denominational affiliations.
The day will begin with registration and snacks at 9:30 a.m. The opening session in Hoversten Chapel at 10:00 a.m. will include a welcome, introductions, and a chance for students to share their stories and initial questions in small groups with seminary and divinity school representatives. Following this opening session, everyone will be able to attend Augsburg's daily chapel service. During the luncheon, Dr. Mary Lowe, Associate Professor of Religion at Augsburg College, will speak about the theme inviting us to consider our own attempts to wade in the water and discern what might be in store for us. The afternoon will feature sessions allowing for participants to explore burning questions and have more specific conversations about discernment. (Possible questions include: What is it like to be in seminary or divinity school?, What is it really like to be a pastor? What are options besides traditional pastoral settings? How does one navigate the multiple options for theological graduate study? How can I finance higher theological study? And more!)
This event is free - we just need people to pre-register in order to attend the luncheon. If you are not able to stay for the entire time, please still come to as much as your schedule allows.
Register in person at the campus ministry office, by email, or by signing up online - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dHdTT1h3SjNjRmZkeVBNbDlsMXJsM3c6MQ
