Tutors Needed for Cedar-Riverside Youth

Brian Coyle Community Center is looking for tutors for our after school youth programs. We are located at 420 15th Ave. S. (just past the Cedar/Riverside intersection, about a 15 minute walk from Augsburg campus.)

We have kindergarten through 12th grade after school tutoring Monday through Friday. Our tutors work with students on a variety of subjects, between 2:30 and 8 p.m. Our k-8th end their tutoring time by 5 p.m., but our high schoolers may receive tutoring throughout the entirety of the afternoon and evening hours. Our k-8th daily after school activities, which our tutors can also be a part of, include technology, gym, art, boys' and girls' groups, and more.

Our programs are based on youth voice and developing the skills to make positive choices. All age groups have opportunities for service learning, particularly our Action CREW (our middle school age group) who work to improve the community. For our sports oriented students, we have a 4th-8th boys flag football league and a girls volleyball league.

For our teens, along with daily tutoring, we offer safe spaces to hang out, open computer lab and open gym. We also have FANS or Furthering Achievement through a Network of Support, which is our scholarship program for 16 students yearly. In this program, we work on College Readiness, Healthy Decision-making, Leadership, and Service.

Our young women have the opportunity to be a part of Women Empowered, a group that is defined and developed by the participants and facilitated by one of our Youth Development Team members. We also have a Girls Open Gym held on Wednesday nights, which is completely closed off to the male persuasion and allows the girls to really let their hair down!

And our young men get to take part in Brotherhood, a similar program offering opportunities for positive growth and the development of solidarity. On Fridays we have an adult gym night.

To apply for a tutoring position or an activity assistant position, please use the following link:

Make sure to check Brian Coyle as your volunteer site preference (in the Availability section).

If you have any questions before you want to commit, you can email Elena at eveslage@augsburg.edu. Hope to hear from/see you soon!

Keeping Track of Auggies

Auggie Alex Buffalohead Blogs from Mexico

Auggie Alex Buffalohead starts her home stay as part of her study abroad experience with CGE Mexico.

Follow her and fellow Auggies Ingrid Bergland, Galina Bruckner, Josh Fredlund, Nestor Garcia, Carlisa Hardy and Sarah Mueller through their semester abroad in Mexico.

http://cgemexico.blogspot.com/2012/10/this-past-friday-all-of-students-in-cge.html

Starting this past Friday all of the students in the CGE program moved in with their new host families. If you ever have the opportunity to live with a host family I highly recommend it! Even though I have only been living with my family for five days I already feel a part of this family. This has been a great opportunity to experience the language on a more consistence basis, learn more of the cultural similarities and differences, eat amazing food and much more! I find it incredible that a family from far away can be so embracing. I have never felt so much love!

Besides the relationships that are being formed, I find the conversations the most interesting. We have had discussions ranging from the weather, food, dating, to cultural similarities and differences. Most of these conversations occur around the dinner table or in the kitchen. My family has traveled, studied in the United States, or their children are currently studying in the US or living permanently. I find it very interesting to hear their perspective of traveling to the United States.

My host mom's son told me that when he lived in the United States he would always try finding clothes that are "Made in the US" and he found it weird that when buying clothes they were almost always "Made in Mexico" or "Made in China." The stores that he looked at were for example "Banana Republic" which one would think that this store would have clothes that aren't imported. He said that nothing is made in the U.S. because of globalization. He also said that clothes from the US are cheaper, and even have a distinct smell, which is something I am going to pay more attention to (because to me the smell of the clothes from Mexico or fresh laundry smells amazing!) He is right, that a lot of the products in the United States are imported which is unfortunate. Its also interesting that when shopping in Mexico a lot of the clothes in the malls are also from other countries such as Bangladesh or china. Its really interesting to literally see how much of our commonly used things are imported from other counties. I have really enjoyed these dinner conversations and look forward to more to come and for my horizon to be widened!

Need a Plumber or Mechanic?

I have two good friends that I like to recommend for the great work they do. If you need a plumber, call Andy at 612-321-6700 and if you need a mechanic, call David at 952-270-5030. Both work out of their homes so they're able to offer their work at extremely reasonable prices. Let me know if you have questions about them.
