Today is the Last Day in the WL for 2011
Today is your last chance to use the Augsburg College Writing Lab in 2011. Almost 1300 students have found their way to the lab in Lindell Library, street level, to visit tutors this fall term. The Lab will close at the end of the evening shift (9 pm) tonight and reopen for WEC and grad students on Jan. 9. Please note the schedule: Jan. 9 - 13, 5:30-8 pm. The Lab will open on its regular schedule on Monday, Jan. 24. The tutors and I wish all writers a happy and safe holiday.
SOC for Students from Recent Immigrant Background
Leaders for Literacy is an cooperative program of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities designed particularly for students who speak more than one language and who identify as coming from recent immigrant backgrounds.
This spring the program moves to Augsburg College where a special section of "SOC 111:Community and the Modern Metropolis" will be offered. Co-taught by faculty members in Sociology and ESL, the course will combine field trips, public achievement, cultural experiences and rigorous academic study to explore how community is built in urban settings. A special focus on the immigrant experience in the Twin Cities will shape the course. Students will have the opportunity to explore issues of language, identity, and citizenship and develop leadership skills to help them effect change in their communities.
SOC 111 fulfills a Social and Behavioral Studies LAF requirement of the core curriculum. This section will meet Tu/Th from 1:30-3:00, starting Tues. 1/31/12 and ending Thurs. 5/10/12.

Day Student Government Resolution-Catering Policy
On Friday, December 9 the Echo printed a resolution passed by Day Student Government regarding the Augsburg College catering policy. There has been some confusion over what this resolution means. Please read below for clarification:
The Day Student Government passed what is called a resolution, which is a non-binding formal statement of opinion. In other words, this resolution is the formal statement of opinion of the Day Student Government in regards to the catering policy at Augsburg College.
Please note that nothing about the current catering policy has changed. It may have appeared in the article as though the catering policy was altered, but in fact, student groups and college departments are still required to utilize A'viands for on-campus events that have 25 or more people.

Sound like something familiar? They spell S-T-R-E-S-S. Perhaps you are feeling it right now due to all the holiday madness (and just from reading this!). Holiday stress, economic concerns, relationship problems, and employment issues profoundly affect our bodies as much as traumatic stress, leaving us more susceptible to catching the "office cold" or your childs flu, or even lead to disease such as diabetes and heart disease.
Whats a person to do? Exercise, of course, but what you eat matters too.
Often times when we are feeling stressed we reach for the wrong food. M&Ms anyone? We think that eating (and drinking, yes, drinking) something a little less nutritious may improve our moods. Perhaps it will only temporarily, but next time, try reaching for these foods instead for longer lasting relief and sickness and disease prevention.
Stress-Busters & Mood-Boosting Food List
Legumes - dried beans and peas- any will do!
Fruits all kinds, but especially blueberries, plums, & acai berries
Vegetables all kinds, but especially broccoli, red leaf lettuce, & asparagus
Nuts all kinds, but especially walnuts & pecans
Spices all kinds, by especially cloves, cinnamon, turmeric, & garlic
Dark chocolate 70% or darker not processed with alkali AKA Dutch process (moderation please!)
Fish the fatty kind for Omega 3s: such as salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, herring, sardines, & trout
Stress Relief Exercise
Now take a moment, sit back in your chair (with proper posture please), close your eyes and take 5 deep breaths, thinking only of your breath as you inhale down into your belly and exhale completely through your lungs. Feel positive energy flowing in and the negative energy flowing out. Do this anytime you feel S-T-R-E-S-S or that bad mood creeping in.

Spirit of MLK Award Nominations: Due Friday
The 2012 MLK Committee is seeking nominations for the 2011 MLK Award. Annually, we award two people who have demonstrated peace, love, humility, integrity and honor while working with others. We are looking for people who have demonstrated these abilities on or off campus.
Please give this careful consideration and take the time to nominate one faculty or staff member and/or one student that you believe should receive special recognition for following in the spirit of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Self nominations are also accepted.
Please provide:
Specific examples of how this person has represented peace, love, humility, integrity and honor while working with others
Your name and contact information and the full name of the person/people that you are nominating along with their contact information.

Fine Arts Keystone Presentation
Please join graduating seniors from the Film, Music, Studio Arts and Theatre departments as they present the 2011 Keystone collaboration "Food For Thought...Community Connection, Support".
Food For Thought, a series of visual arts and performance pieces is based on research on the famine in Somalia that students conducted fall semester. Working in partnership with the American Refugee Committee (ARC) through a series of presenters, interviews, online articles, and films, students compiled research and created discipline specific work that
reflects their interpretations of the famine.
All work from Food For Thought will be available for purchase and donations will be solicited for "I Am A Star" a recent ARC initiative that provides direct support for the famine in Somalia.

Billy Mills Event
Billy Mills, 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist in 10,000 Meter run, will present here at Augsburg College on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7 PM in the Chapel. He is an amazing speaker who motivates and inspires by telling his story. Please join us!! Free and open to everyone!!
Billy Mills was born and raised on the Pine Ridge (Lakota) Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Although Pine Ridge is very rich in culture and spirit, it is continually recognized economically as one of the poorest communities in America with unemployment reaching 80%.
Billy was orphaned by the age of 12 and sent to boarding schools. He graduated from high school at Haskell Indian School. Billy became involved in distance running and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Kansas. Never winning a major race in track and field or cross country, he continued to show promise by his performances, making NCAA and AAU All-American seven times. Upon graduating from the University of Kansas, Billy was commissioned an officer in the United States Marine Corps., and continued training for the Olympic Team. He made the Olympic Team in two events, the marathon and the 10,000 meter run. He had trained his body, mind, and soul for "Peak Performance." And the world was about to see the greatest upset in Olympic history unfold.
Today Billy is an accomplished businessman, author, and National Spokesperson for Christian Relief Services. As National Spokesperson, he has helped raise over 500 million dollars in cash and in-kind for charities worldwide. He has received five honorary doctorates, and is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Citation, the highest honor that the University of Kansas Alumni Association can bestow upon an individual to acknowledge outstanding achievement for the betterment of mankind. A major motion picture has been made about Billy, titled "Running Brave," and has been a positive influence on many of our American youth. Billy Mills was recognized on several end-of-the-millennium lists, including being chosen as Sports Illustrated's Athlete of the Century for the state of South Dakota and Runners World Magazine the second greatest Olympic moment. In 2009, his race was chosen by Running Times Magazine as the greatest distance race on the track in the history of the Olympics. He is the only person from the Western Hemisphere to ever win the Olympic 10,000 Meter Run.
