Scholarly Writing Retreat – Last Call

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

Graduation Skills Workshops

All faculty who teach a course designed to develop one of the graduation skills – critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, writing, or speaking – are expected to participate in a workshop for each of the skills they are responsible for teaching. These workshops clarify the graduation requirement, and discuss strategies for teaching the skill, constructing activities and assignments to develop the skill, and providing assessments and feedback on skill development. If you are interested in Law School, please join the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity for an LSAT prep course this Spring. Our course instructor scored in the top 1% of test-takers and has taught LSAT seminars for 14 years. Most corporate tutors charge $175/Hour! URGO offers this 3-week course for only $150. It's never too early to take this course, even if you are just thinking about Law School.

The course meets Wednesdays from 6-9 PM for three weeks (May 11, 18 & 25) in Oren Gateway Center 113. Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

Master Leadership in a New Way

Portfolio Workshop

For Faculty Preparing for CTP Reviews
May 13, 9:00-3:00 pm, OGC 100

The purpose of this workshop is to help candidates for any type of Committee on Tenure and Promotion (CTP) review to determine the various forms of evidence that can help build a strong portfolio. The focus is on evidence of teaching, but the strategies directly apply to scholarship and service as well. This workshop is not designed to replace departmental guidance and advice nor is it an analysis of the Faculty Handbook language as it applies to an individual. It does not represent the views of the CTP committee; rather, this is a long standing CTL workshop to help support candidates' preparation and is one that many colleagues have found useful. The workshop is facilitated by Diane Pike and Su Doree. Participants are encouraged to form groups to review each other's portfolio materials and provide feedback and support following the workshop.

Call for Proposals – Symposium in Kigali, Rwanda

Go to Kigali, Rwanda to present your work, share your research, and generate knowledge at the SIT Symposium "Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging Past, Present, and Future" January 10 - 13, 2012. The objective is to explore together the meeting points of memory studies and of post conflict, peace building, and reconciliation studies, and generate knowledge about the pedagogy and ethics in teaching post-conflict in a study abroad setting.

If you desire to present, abstracts of your session are due June 1, 2011. In addition to the symposium, there will be a site visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial with focus on the pedagogy of teaching memory, peace building, reconciliation, and social justice.

GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

Creating an Inclusive Campus – May 9-11 Conference

For All Faculty, Staff, and Leaders

Once a year we gather together to share what we are doing to create an inclusive campus and to plan future initiatives. Previously known as the Diversity and Global Learning conference, this event focuses on a wide range of issues associated with making intentional diversity a reality at Augsburg College.

Monday, May 9, 8:30-4:30 (Chapel and OGC 113, 200, and 201) – Opening and Concurrent Sessions
Join us for a continental breakfast in the Foss Atrium before the opening session in the Chapel. The initial session, led by Michael Grewe, will focus what it means to be an ally with our LGBTQIA communities at Augsburg, what Augsburg is doing, and what we need to do. After lunch, there will be concurrent sessions divided into three tracks: Engaging All Students, Embedding Diversity and Global Learning, and Developing Our Community. Sessions led by faculty, staff, students, and administrators will address how inclusive we are, how to engage students in recovery from addiction, how to embed diversity and global learning in curricular and co-curricular experiences, how to raise issues of sexuality in the classroom, new approaches to hiring diverse faculty, and what we do when something goes wrong.

Tuesday, May 10, 8:00-4:30 (OGC 113, 200, and 201) – Concurrent Sessions
Join us for a continental breakfast in the OGC Atrium before continuing concurrent sessions. The track on Engaging All Students will include sessions on how to differentiate instruction and engage ESL students, politically and economically diverse students, and students with psychiatric disabilities. The Embedding Diversity and Global Learning track will feature sessions on exploring "Isms," talking about race, addressing vocation and religious pluralism, and building intercultural competence. The Developing Our Community track will include a two-part exploration of a model for nonviolent communication and a two-part session on understanding our neighbors.

Wednesday, May 11, 9:00-3:00 – Working Sessions
Working sessions will be held with departments to debrief the conference and departmental diversity initiatives, and plan actions to integrate what they've learned into departmental plans. The sessions will be organized as follows:

Presiding Bishop Hanson to Speak at Trinity Sunday

Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson, Augsburg alum '67, will speak at Trinity's Adult Forum this Sunday, May 8th, 9:45-10:45 on the topic: "Developing Partnership Between Lutheran Colleges and Local Congregations." The Forum takes place in the Green Room in Foss. President Pribbenow will be preaching at the 11:00 service on the same day. All are welcome.

Chris Bergstrom Memorial Service TODAY

MINNEAPOLIS -- A memorial service for former Augsburg College football assistant coach Chris Bergstrom, who died on April 20, will be held this Monday, May 2, at 4:30 p.m., at the Bethany Lutheran Church near the Augsburg campus.

Bergstrom, who served as an offensive line coach for the Auggies from 2002-09 and as men's athletic equipment supervisor in 2008-09, died suddenly on April 20, 2011, at the age of 37.

Monday's service is open to the public, and all family, friends, teammates, fellow coaches and former players are encouraged to attend. Bethany Lutheran Church is located on 2511 East Franklin Avenue, Minneapolis, Minn., 55406.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Kenneth and Doris Walter, Uncle Robert Walter, Aunt Louise Vote and Cousin Daniel Noonan. He is survived by his parents, Frank and Nancy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.); his children, Charlie and Kennedy Bergstrom and their mother Kendra; siblings Kelli and David Powers (Worcester, Mass.), Robin and Eric Nichols (Westford, Mass.), Ryan and Stacy Bergstrom (Farmington, Minn.); and six nieces & nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 25 at the Holy Cross Church in Omaha, Neb.

Bergstrom played collegiate football at the University of Minnesota, where he was a two-year starter (22 games) at left guard. He was named honorable-mention All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media in 1996. He was chosen the team's Offensive Line MVP in six games during his career, and did not give up a sack his senior season.

Bergstrom played arena football for four seasons. His prep career included an all-state selection as an offensive lineman and a state all-star game appearance from Warroad High School. In 1999-2000, he served as a football assistant coach at Minneapolis Patrick Henry High School.

Bergstrom received his bachelor's degree in sociology of law and criminal deviance from the University of Minnesota in 1998.

Bill McKee Named New Women's Basketball Coach

MINNEAPOLIS -- Bill McKee, who has led dramatic turnarounds of several basketball programs during his coaching career, has been hired as the new head coach for the Augsburg College women's basketball team, the athletic department announced on Friday.

McKee has served as head coach for the Mounds View (Minn.) High School girls' basketball program for the past three seasons. Prior to coaching at Mounds View, he served as men's basketball head coach at Anoka-Ramsey Community College (2006-08), and as boys' basketball head coach at Blaine (2001-06) and Cretin-Derham Hall (1995-2001) high schools. He also served as an assistant coach for 10 seasons at the University of St. Thomas in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

"I'm very excited and enthusiastic about the opportunity to coach at Augsburg," McKee said. "I'm happy to once again be coaching in the MIAC. I want to thank Athletic Director Jeff Swenson and the other search committee members for this opportunity."

"Bill has a proven track record of turning around programs," Swenson said. "He has produced positive results in his four head coaching positions, and he has extensive experience in the MIAC during his years at St. Thomas. We look forward to having him become a part of the Augsburg team."

At Mounds View, McKee turned around a program that had recorded a 16-36 record in the two seasons prior to his arrival. In three seasons with the Mustangs, McKee finished with a 62-18 record, including a 24-4 mark in the 2009-10 season. This season, the Mustangs finished 21-6. McKee was named Section 5AAAA Coach of the Year in the 2008-09 season, after leading the Mustangs to a 17-8 finish.

At Cretin-Derham Hall, McKee led the Raiders to conference titles twice and was named both conference and section coach of the year three times. He was 29-2 in his final season with the Raiders in 2000-01, earning a trip to the state tournament.

At Blaine, he led the Bengals to the conference and section titles, earning a state tournament berth in the 2003-04 season, finishing 25-4. He was named section coach of the year that season. He was 18-8 in his last season as men's basketball coach at Anoka-Ramsey in 2007-08, with his team ranked as high as No. 6 in the country in the national junior college polls.

Prior to becoming a head coach, McKee served as a men's basketball assistant coach for 10 seasons at his alma mater, the University of St. Thomas, under head coach Steve Fritz. During his final seven seasons with the Tommies, he directed the team's offense, and his teams produced a 119-21 record during that span. He was part of six MIAC regular-season championships and four MIAC tournament title teams with the Tommies, including a berth in the NCAA Division III national championships in the 1993-94 season.

McKee was a team captain for both the basketball and track and field teams during his playing days at St. Thomas, as a member of four conference championship and three NAIA District 13 playoff title teams. The Tommie basketball team finished 59-5 in MIAC play during his four seasons.

McKee earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from St. Thomas, and later earned his master's degree in educational psychology there. Outside of coaching, McKee has worked as a supervisor in the Ramsey County Corrections department since 1989.

McKee replaces Jennifer Britz, who had served as Augsburg's head coach for seven seasons before resigning at the end of the 2010-11 season. Augsburg finished 5-20 this season, 4-18 in MIAC play.
