Remembering with Dignity Art Exhibit
Putting a Face with the Name:
New art exhibit seeks to put the past into focus as artists imagine the lives of the residents in former state hospitals.
Remember those old Minnesota state hospital cemeteries? The ones with anonymous graves for people with disabilities? The same cemeteries that are now getting restored with headstones that have names, birth and death dates? Here's a question for you: how did they ever figure out who was buried where, and what their names were? And what did these people look like, anyway?
Those questions will be partly answered later this month when a new interactive art exhibit goes on display in the Oren Gateway Center lobby, April 20 - April 21. On Thursday, April 21, 2011 Advocating Change Together's (ACT) Remembering With Dignity (RWD) project will present "See Their Faces," a series of new portraits and an interactive game that gives the public a chance to experience the process of turning a clearing in the forest (abandoned cemetery) into a place of dignity and remembrance.
This event and exhibit are made possible by the collaborative efforts of ACT (Advocating Change Together), the History Society, the Dean's Fund, and the day students in EDC 410, Learners with Special Needs.
