The Learning Commons Is Here
On the street level of Lindell Library, youll see some significant changes. Weve opened up the space to make room for collaboration, added computers, and replaced the large reference desk with tables where a librarian and a technology student assistant together create a one-stop-shop for assistance with research and technology. Nearby, a Multimedia Lab provides scanning and video editing workstations, and the new TechDesk addresses deeper student technology questions.
So, come check out the new space and let us know what you think. Whether your assignments and projects require research, writing papers, or creating presentations, the Learning Commons is the place to go!

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College
Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.
I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.
To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.
Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.
The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.
Need a Bookstore Account?
Do you need to charge your textbooks to your financial aid? Open a bookstore account on the Enrollment Center web site; click the pink box on the right side of the page. Note that a minimum of 24 hours is required to activate your account. You will see the charge on your Account Activity screen in Records & Registration when the account has been opened. If you do not have financial aid to cover your tuition and fees PLUS the bookstore account, the charge will be due with your Spring/Winter fees.

Introducing the TechDesk
You may notice as you walk through the library, that the Student Computing Desk is no longer located in the Link Level computer lab. The Student Computing Desk has been removed from the lab to allow us to improve student technology help.
We're excited to introduce to you -- the TechDesk! The TechDesk is the new central contact point for student technology information. Come visit us in room 104 on the main level of the Lindell Library; or reach us by phone (612-330-1400), email ( techdesk@augsburg.edu ), or on the web ( http://www.augsburg.edu/techdesk ) . We're here to help with your student technology questions.
For those of you who liked working in the Link Level computer lab because there was help available right there in the lab -- check out the library's new Learning Commons lab on the main level of the library. That lab is staffed to help you with using the lab computers and with research.
