Students: Conference Travel Funds Available

Applications for student conference travel funding are available online at the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) site. At the program site, find the "URGO Forms" option from the list found on the upper left-hand side of the site. Click on it, then choose "Student Travel Funding"). We have set up the Urness balcony area as a space for those who want to smoke. It has a few tables and chairs and 3 cigarette butt disposals. The area is covered and well-lit. We hope this will be the alternative space for the Christensen Center quad entryway during bad weather.

Thanks to those who are using the space provided on the southwest entry to Oren Gateway. There are two benches and several ashtrays there and the area is covered.

As a reminder:
At Augsburg College:
• Smoking is prohibited in all indoor facilities.
• All residence halls are smoke free.
• Smoking is prohibited on balconies with the exception of the balcony outside Urness Hall.
• Smokers should refrain from smoking on stairs and ramps leading into or out of buildings.

Disability Awareness Month

Today's fact:
Everybody's fighting some kind of stereotype, and people with disabilities are no exception. The difference is that many of the barriers people with disabilities face begin with people's attitudes. And attitudes are often rooted in misinformation and misunderstandings about what it's like to live with a disability.

New Organization on Campus!

Hello

My name is Heather Steininger and I am a student at Augsburg. I am interested in starting an animal rights group here on campus. I have already posted signs around campus and gotten good feedback from students who are interested. I am now looking for a staff or faculty member to be our group adviser.

Here is a little bit about the group and our main focus:

*We are mainly going to focus on educating the students on campus about the treatment of animals that are raised with the purpose of slaughter.

*The effects of the treatment on animals.

* The hormones used to inject animals.

* The effects of consuming hormones as a general population, now and in years to come.

Our main goal is educate students to let them make their own choices. Hopefully in seeing some of our goals and our drive to create this new organization it will spark some interest!

If you are interested let me know!! We can chat more about the organization and getting things started.

Thank you so much for your time .

Heather Steininger

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Disability Awareness Month

QUESTION: What is National Disability Employment Awareness Month?

ANSWER: Congress has designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month." www.dol.gov/odep

In recognition of NDEAM, the CLASS Office and the Access Office are offering opportunities to learn more about issues related to disability and services that are available at Augsburg.

For our students, staff, faculty and guests. Oct. 3, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Information table in Christensen Center Check out the “Brain on a Stick”

For Faculty and Staff: Oct. 19, 3 – 5 p.m., Friday Seminar with Karena Jones Location: Library 301 Presentation on Asperger’s Syndrome
