Message: Professor Stottrup will speak in the Chemistry Seminar on Wed 2/8/06 at 2:30 pm in Sci 315. His topic is cell membranes, which are made up of lipids and proteins. New research suggests that lipids play a more active role in cellular processes than previously understood. The seminar introduces the physics of sterol/phospholipid mixing in monolayer and bilayer systems as well as some techniques used to probe this mixing behavior. Results of a recent study on the miscibility phase behavior of lipid monolayers containing a variety of sterols will be presented, as well as directions for future work. The campus community is invited; refreshements will be served.
