Discussion on Culture of Alcohol in the Workplace
LIVING IN RECOVERY WORKING IN A CULTURE OF ALCOHOL
NOVEMBER 15, 2016 | 8-9:30 AM HOVERSTEN CHAPEL
This presentation is FREE and open to the public
http://www.augsburg.edu/corporatefoundation/2016/10/25/conversations-on-the-creative-economy/
Professionals in recovery often hide their recovery because of a stigma that their addiction makes them weak or untrustworthy. In reality, these professionals have proven strength and grit in the face of extreme adversity. This stigma creates barriers to career advancement and belonging. Professionals in recovery face an additional challenge when they work in careers where relationship-building among colleagues, business, and networking is often accompanied by alcohol or a "happy hour" environment.
More than 11% of full-time workers face alcohol-related issues in a given year, and employers incur a cost of approximately $1,700 a year for each employee with an untreated drug and alcohol addiction. Corporate leaders can support the health and well-being of their employees, and save money, by acknowledging the detrimental affects of a culture of alcohol within their organization. Supporting employees in recovery benefits employees as well as the companies who recognize the effects of a culture of alcohol in business.
Join Chris Farrell from MPR as he interviews leaders in our community who are working on changing the culture of alcohol in business and eliminating the stigma faced by professionals in recovery.
Panel Guests
Mike Sime- Mike is the President/CEO and co-owner of Rapid Packaging and Berg Bag. He currently serves as Chairman of Augsburg College's StepUP Program, is on the board of trustees for Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, and SCSU Recovery Community.
William Moyers-William is a best-selling author and the Vice President of Public Affairs and Community Relations for the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

Why Academic Freedom Matters in the Classroom
This year the Augsburg chapter of the Association of American University Professors has organized the presentation and discussion, "Why Academic Freedom Matters in the Classroom," with Carleton professors Jeff Snyder and Amna Khalid, who recently published a major article in The New Republic on academic freedom and campus bias response teams (11:30-1pm, Thursday, 17 Nov, in Sateren Auditorium). The event is co-sponsored by Faculty Senate with support from longtime donor Judith McCartin Scheide, the Provost, and CTL. All students, staff, administration, and faculty are welcome. We anticipate a lively, vigorous, and challenging discussion.

Fundraiser: Come One, Come All to Break Free
Did you know that MN is 1 of the top 13 states in the country for high incidence in recruitment of minors? And in this day and age, there are more human slaves in the world than ever before in history.
We're students of Augsburg College wanting to combat these violent patterns with a fundraising campaign. This project is to raise awareness and acquire funds for an organization that has been and continues to be dedicated to this work, Breaking Free. We're setting out to do services provided by you that you may not have the time/energy to do in exchange for monetary donations you can contribute. As well, other donations such as non-perishable foods, diapers, cleaning supplies and toiletries are needed! We want to serve our fellow peers, colleagues and community members for the purpose of coming together in support of the work Breaking Free in their efforts to eradicate human trafficking.
Breaking Free is located in St. Paul and one of the few in the nation to do work surrounding advocacy, direct services, housing, and education for women and girls escaping sex trafficking.
