Integrating Scholarship and Teaching Faculty Panel

Mark your calendars for this upcoming faculty panel from CTL next Friday, November 11.

Are teaching and scholarship two distinct activities for faculty? Or can they be mutually sustaining endeavors? How do faculty manage these responsibilities at Augsburg? If you are thinking about these questions, our panel of CTL scholarship grant recipients, may be able to shed some light. Three faculty from a diverse scholarly background including religion, theatre, and creative writing will share their approach to integrating scholarship and teaching at Augsburg. The goal of this panel is to share stories and create a community of scholars who are interested in creating ways to combine their scholarship and teaching.

This is a brown bag event - you are invited to bring your lunch and eat while you hear stories from your colleagues. The panel will include Stephan Clark (English), Beliza Torres Narvaez (Theater), and Lori B. Hale (Religion).

Keeping Track of Auggies

Music Alum Fulbright PhD Scholar in Norway

Music Education Alum Solveig Mebust is currently working on a PhD in Musicology with a minor in Feminist and Critical Studies at the U of MN. This year she is conducting dissertation research in Norway funded by Fulbright and a Torske Klubben Fellowship. Hosted by the Grieg Academy at Universitetet in Bergen, Solveig will also visit Oslo, Copenhagen, Arendal, Trondheim and London, among other places to complete her research.

While at Augsburg Solveig participated in URGO summer research under the excellent mentorship of Dr. Merilee Klemp, surveying new editions of music history textbooks to update the Augsburg Repertoire Test, a requirement for music majors at Augsburg, in order to ensure that it fit with current pedagogical standards. The revised exam increased the representation of women and composers of color, as well as the number of post-WWII compositions. Solveig considers her early experience with research as a strong motivating factor for her seeking a PhD.

Congratulations to Solveig. An abstract of her dissertation research project is listed below:

Abstract
Women have long been participants in the expensive and time consuming labor of building musical organizations and funding performers and composers. However, most scholarship on this topic emphasizes the work of wealthy women, while continuing to ignore the role that middle- and working-class women played in the creation of musical communities and attainment of their own aesthetic goals. In this project I focus on the music activities work of Norwegian women, particularly Nina Hagerup Grieg, Theodora Cormontan Musikforlag, and the Norsk Kvinnesaksforening (Norwegian Women's Rights Organization). The networks built by these organizations and individuals demonstrate the dynamics of performance, politics, and patriarchy that dominated the production of music during a culturally rich period of Norwegian history. Their work interrogates the limits of gender-based division of labor in music, pointing to the ways in which professionalization of aesthetic and administrative roles benefits men while undervaluing the same work when performed by women.

Such feminized labor has been categorized as "music activism" by Ralph Locke and Cyrilla Barr, a term which I have found particularly useful, as it seeks to acknowledge the variety of ways in which women participate in the production of musical life: from the organization of concerts involving large numbers of musicians to the material and emotional support of individual composers; from labor focused on self-preservation and profit to labor focused on fighting the oppression of others or for love of the art. I will demonstrate that the term "crafting," already associated with productive feminized labor, better represents the creative powers enacted by these women. Their work provides the material and practical support that was necessary for the production of music in their networks.
