CTL Night at the Theatre - Thurs., Nov. 3

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend the Theater Department's production of Cymbeline and a post-show discussion next Thursday, November 3.

A limited number of free tickets are available for faculty and staff. It's first-come, first-served, so email Mara at ctl@augsburg.edu now to reserve your spot!

Cymbeline, one of William Shakespeare's final plays, is a fantastical fairy tale that swings from comedic heights to tragic despair with an added touch of romance. Taking place during King Cymbeline's reign in Britain, the play tells the story of Princess Imogen's romance with the courteous but poor Posthumus, their secret marriage and his consequent banishment. The couple's journey back to each other involves wagers and poison, hidden identities, long-lost brothers, deceitful villains, a lost bracelet, evil stepmothers, ineffectual fathers, and an invasion by the Roman army. Running time for Cymbeline is about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Attendees are invited to a dessert reception and discussion immediately following the production in the Foss Concourse area. English Professor Doug Green and Director Darcey Engen, along with student actors from the show, will lead the discussion during the dessert reception. Please join us for this event!

Model United Nations Delegation - Apply Now

Students, there is still time to apply for Model UN! Those accepted will enroll in POL 368 in the spring semester and travel to NYC for the national conference on March 18-25, 2017. A lab fee of $500 is required; the college will cover the remainder of the cost.

The priority deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Monday, November 14.

Prerequisites are POL 160 World Politics OR consent of the instructor. Any undergraduate student, regardless of major or class year, may apply!

Fair Labor Standards Act Information

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law that establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, record-keeping, and youth employment standards affecting employees in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments. Changes to this law, effective December 1, 2016, include increasing the salary threshold required for an employee to be considered exempt from overtime.

Human Resources has worked with supervisors and the President's Leadership Team to develop a plan that enables Augsburg to comply with changes to the FLSA. To learn more about the changes to FLSA and the types of positions that may be impacted, please refer to the Augsburg College FAQ's http://web.augsburg.edu/hr/FLSA_FAQ.pdf

Employees who are in positions impacted by the change in FLSA will be contacted by their supervisor by October 31. Because there are special provisions for higher education, faculty and others in positions whose primary duty is teaching will not be affected by these changes.

Human Resources will be hosting meetings to update employees about the new regulations and provide guidance on record-keeping requirements, how to determine compensable time, and Augsburg's pre-approval requirement for working overtime. These sessions will be held in the Marshall Room on:
November 3rd from 10 – 11 am
November 14th from 9-10 am
November 15th from 1-2 pm

Since 1993, BareBones Productions has presented The Annual Halloween Outdoor Puppet Extravaganza, a community-created spectacle pageant of larger-than-life puppetry, drama, stilting, dance, fire, song, and music that honors the circle of life by celebrating its seasonal arc of death in the Fall. After the performance, the audience joins the cast in enjoying hot food and drink served by Sisters' Camelot, Minneapolis' free organic food distribution collective, and raucous dancing with live music performed by local bands including Gypsy Brass-Americana party legends, the Brass Messengers.

We present the popular "Halloween Show" each year as an alternative Halloween community arts event, appropriate for all ages and without a commercial focus, that takes place in a Twin Cities urban neighborhood park. Over 250 artists, puppeteers, musicians, performers, builders, technicians, ushers, and helpers of all kinds are involved in the creation of each performance. The Halloween Extravaganza, through 2009, was built each year on the West Bank in Minneapolis.

AIS 205: Contemporary American Indians: In this topics-oriented course, students focus on issues that face contemporary American Indians, including tribal sovereignty and identity politics, treaty rights, language retention and education, religious freedom, and Indian activism.

AIS 364: Indigenous Filmmakers. This film and media course introduces students to the exciting and expanding field of Indigenous media—specifically films and visual media made by Native Americans. We explore the political and social forces at work behind the American Indigenous film movement, which provides an extraordinary range in perspectives and views that inform Native American cultures.
Core Curriculum Component: None Prerequisite(s): None 4 Semester Credits
Meets: Wed. 6-9:30

AIS 405: Indigenous Activism and Resistance in the Americas. This course explores ongoing and current forms of activism and resistance across the Americas that are directly related to cultural survival and continuity, issues of sovereignty and peoplehood, autonomy and self-determination, and decolonization. Students do original research and signature projects.

Core Curriculum Component: AIS Keystone, Upper Division elective for AIS; capstone for Culture and Justice minor. 4 Semester Credits

New: Interfaith Ally Workshop, Nov. 2, 11:10 a.m.

Religious diversity is growing in our nation. As our campus becomes more religiously diverse, it's essential to engage in interfaith dialogue and understanding. This new workshop, offered by Augsburg Campus Ministries through the Diversity and Inclusion program, will explore how religious literacy and interfaith understanding can be effectively nurtured on our campus and our neighborhood. The workshop includes: current religious demographics for Augsburg students, case studies, best practices and local resources. Come prepared to engage one another in reflection and small group discussion.

Be a Part of Advent Vespers Processional Party

The 37th Annual Advent Vespers is approaching rapidly! Ten to twelve thousand people come to the 'cathedral-like' Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis for Augsburg's Advent Vespers. Hundreds of Augsburg singers, instrumentalists and liturgical participants will lead these five services. Be a part of vespers by carrying a candle, torch banner, or bells in the gospel processional! This is a great way to settle into Advent and spend time with other Auggies.

The services are on Friday, 12/2, at 5pm & 8pm, and on Saturday, 12/3, at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm. Bus transportation between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran is provided, as well as meals and snacks.

The Center for Wellness and Counseling welcomes the MN Visiting Nurse Association for an additional flu shot clinic Thursday 10/27/16 from 11:30 - 1:30 pm in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office.

If you have not gotten your flu shot yet, you are encouraged to drop in on Thursday and get your shot. Please bring a photo ID and your insurance card or $36 cash or check (credit or debit cards not accepted).

Update on the Crisis in Syria &Turkey

Friday morning October 28 from 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. in OGC 103, Matthew Hand of Lutheran Mideast Development will report on the current situation along the Turkey-Syria border and the plight of the Kurds in Eastern Turkey. Matthew Hand is LMD's organizer on the ground in Turkey. LMD is small faith-based NGO based in St. Paul and the director is Pastor John Snider (Augsburg '78).

NDNZ in the City: Multi-media Narratives

The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents: NDNZ in the City: Multi-media Narratives of American Indian Culture in the Heart of Los Angeles, California

Join us for an evening of talk, short films, photographs, and personal stories from Indigenous multimedia documentarian, Pamela Peters (Navajo). The evening's event will showcase Peter's newest film Legacy of Exiled NDNZ and multimedia presentation Real NDNZ re-take Hollywood. Pamela's work stands against prevalent stereotypes of American Indians in popular culture by pushing viewers to critically analyze the psychological and historical structures of Native American in mass media.

Professor of English Cass Dalglish will be one of the writers featured at Poken Sword's "Luminous Evening Dedicated to the Love of Language" on Friday, Oct. 28, at "2001 A Space," located at 2001 5th Street NE, Minneapolis.

Other performers Friday will include Stanley Dean Hawthorne,
Desdamona, Noel Labine, Tom Cassidy, Molly O'Connor
and Wayne Nelson.

All will share original works on "Loss," Poken Sword's curated topic for October.

Lehmann and Hensley Present at Community Event

Dr. Barbara Lehmann, Associate Professor of Social Work, and Dr. Melissa Hensley, Associate Professor of Social Work, presented a workshop at the 16th Annual Jewish Community Conference on Mental Health on October 23. The conference was held at Temple Israel in Minneapolis. The title of their workshop was "Going Back to School While Living with Mental Illness."
