Civic Studies Symposium on Thurs. - 8 a.m. in OGC 100

The theme of this week's Civic Studies symposium is "The Citizen Professional - Organizing Democracy Change."

Faculty, staff, students, and community members will consider questions such as: What are skills and theory of making democratic changes in professions like teaching and nursing? How can we prepare students to be civic agents of change? What are obstacles and opportunities in a time of turmoil, divisions, and growing economic and racial inequalities?

The second Civic Studies Symposium at Augsburg invites members of the Augsburg community as well as public and community partners to explore such questions. The symposium will include:

- Margaret Finders on why the education department at Augsburg is focusing on developing "citizen teachers"
- Terrance Kwame-Ross on his experiences creating a democratic school
- Katie Clark on how the Nursing Program at Augsburg has come to focus on preparing the "citizen nurse"

The Symposium will announce the 2016-17 Civic Studies Fellows, an outstanding group of staff, faculty, and community-public partners who will work over the coming year on cultural and institutional change. It will also include opportunities for small group discussions on these questions and how to operationalize civic agency (civic empowerment) practices in curricular and co-curricular life.

The three year Civic Studies Initiative aims at deepening a culture of civic empowerment (civic agency) across all aspects of Augsburg and its partners. It is co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Department of Education, and the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. The final meeting at which AAC can approve curricular revisions for **SPRING 2017** is November 7. Proposals for spring 2017 courses that are complete will be added to the meeting agenda up until the next submission deadline: Monday, October 31st, at 5pm.

CTL Night at the Theatre - Thurs. Nov. 3

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend Theater Department's production of Cymbeline and a post-show discussion on November 3rd at 7:00 pm in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater. Running time for Cymbeline is about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Attendees are invited to a dessert reception and discussion immediately following the production in the Foss Concourse area. English Professor Doug Green and Director Darcey Engen, along with student actors from the show, will lead the discussion during the dessert reception. Please join us for this event.

About the play:
Cymbeline, one of William Shakespeare's final plays, is a fantastical fairy tale that swings from comedic heights to tragic despair with an added touch of romance. Taking place during King Cymbeline's reign in Britain, the play tells the story of Princess Imogen's romance with the courteous but poor Posthumus, their secret marriage and his consequent banishment. The couple's journey back to each other involves wagers and poison, hidden identities, long-lost brothers, deceitful villains, a lost bracelet, evil stepmothers, ineffectual fathers, and an invasion by the Roman army.

URGO Academic-Year Research Grants Available

Each fall, URGO offers $1,000 research grants for students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and can be found under the "Research: On-campus" tab on menu of the URGO web page (http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/ ).

To apply, complete the electronic application with your faculty mentor and have them email it to urgo@augsburg.edu. Grants typically run out in the fall, so apply as soon as possible.

Fair Labor Standards Act Information

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law that establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, record-keeping, and youth employment standards affecting employees in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments. Changes to this law, effective December 1, 2016, include increasing the salary threshold required for an employee to be considered exempt from overtime.

Human Resources has worked with supervisors and the President's Leadership Team to develop a plan that enables Augsburg to comply with changes to the FLSA. To learn more about the changes to FLSA and the types of positions that may be impacted, please refer to the Augsburg College FAQ's http://web.augsburg.edu/hr/FLSA_FAQ.pdf

Employees who are in positions impacted by the change in FLSA will be contacted by their supervisor by October 31. Because there are special provisions for higher education, faculty and others in positions whose primary duty is teaching will not be affected by these changes.

Human Resources will be hosting meetings to update employees about the new regulations and provide guidance on record-keeping requirements, how to determine compensable time, and Augsburg's pre-approval requirement for working overtime. These sessions will be held in the Marshall Room on:
November 3rd from 10 - 11 am
November 14th from 9-10 am
November 15th from 1-2 pm

CCNE Accreditation for Graduate Nursing Programs

The Department of Nursing is pleased to announce that the Masters of Arts in Nursing programs (Leadership and Transcultural tracks) and the Doctor of Nursing program (TCN and FNP tracks) have received notification of re-accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation (CCNE) for ten years. This accreditation is in effect as of February 8, 2016, which is the first day of the program's CCNE on-site evaluation. The next on-site evaluation will be scheduled in 2026. The CCNE Board determined that our nursing program met all four accreditation standards with no compliance concerns on the key elements.

The graduate nursing department consists of the following programs:

The Augsburg Master of Arts in Nursing program prepares in-career nurses (R.N.) for transformational leadership and transcultural practice across care settings, with an emphasis on addressing health care inequities.

The post-master's Doctor of Nursing Practice, Transcultural Nursing Leadership (DNP-TCN) track prepares nurses for advanced transcultural nursing leadership in community life, integrating holistic practice modalities that uphold and improve human potential across care settings and care systems.

The post-BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP) track focuses on nursing leadership and integrative primary care of families across cultures and care settings. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification as Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Please congratulate the department of nursing on receiving CCNE accreditation for ten years.

American Holistic Nurse Certification

Congratulations to Dr. Kristin McHale, assistant professor in the department of nursing and interim director of the BSN program in Rochester, for achieving Board Certification in Advanced Holistic Nursing through the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC). Holistic nurses promote health, wellness, and wellbeing as they facilitate their client's growth and healing. This certification offers nurses a way to distinguish themselves as experts in nursing practice, education, and research. Please congratulate Kris on achieving board certification as an advanced holistic nurse.

NSF AugSTEM Applications Due THURSDAY

AugSTEM Scholars Applications Due Thursday, October 27

All materials should be submitted as attachments by email to stem@augsburg.edu before midnight on Thursday, October 27.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF DUE-1565060), AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year. (Differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need.) Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
* Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
* Within 5 semesters of graduating
* Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
* U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
* Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA

Incoming community college transfer students and Augsburg students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

MVNA Flu Shot Clinic Thursday

The Center for Wellness and Counseling welcomes the MN Visiting Nurse Association for an additional flu shot clinic Thursday 10/27/16 from 11:30 - 1:30 pm in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office.

If you have not gotten your flu shot yet, you are encouraged to drop in on Thursday and get your shot. Please bring a photo ID and your insurance card or $36 cash or check (credit or debit cards not accepted).

Since 1993, BareBones Productions has presented The Annual Halloween Outdoor Puppet Extravaganza, a community-created spectacle pageant of larger-than-life puppetry, drama, stilting, dance, fire, song, and music that honors the circle of life by celebrating its seasonal arc of death in the Fall. After the performance, the audience joins the cast in enjoying hot food and drink served by Sisters' Camelot, Minneapolis' free organic food distribution collective, and raucous dancing with live music performed by local bands including Gypsy Brass-Americana party legends, the Brass Messengers.

We present the popular "Halloween Show" each year as an alternative Halloween community arts event, appropriate for all ages and without a commercial focus, that takes place in a Twin Cities urban neighborhood park. Over 250 artists, puppeteers, musicians, performers, builders, technicians, ushers, and helpers of all kinds are involved in the creation of each performance. The Halloween Extravaganza, through 2009, was built each year on the West Bank in Minneapolis.

New: Interfaith Ally Workshop, Nov. 2, 11:10 a.m.

Religious diversity is growing in our nation. As our campus becomes more religiously diverse, it's essential to engage in interfaith dialogue and understanding. This new workshop, offered by Augsburg Campus Ministries through the Diversity and Inclusion program, will explore how religious literacy and interfaith understanding can be effectively nurtured on our campus and our neighborhood. The workshop includes: current religious demographics for Augsburg students, case studies, best practices and local resources. Come prepared to engage one another in reflection and small group discussion.

Native American Film Series: NDNZ in the City

The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents: NDNZ in the City: Multi-media Narratives of American Indian Culture in the Heart of Los Angeles, California

November 2
Join us for an evening of talk, short films, photographs, and personal stories from Indigenous multimedia documentarian, Pamela Peters (Navajo). The evening's event will showcase Peter's newest film Legacy of Exiled NDNZ and multimedia presentation Real NDNZ re-take Hollywood. Pamela's work stands against prevalent stereotypes of American Indians in popular culture by pushing viewers to critically analyze the psychological and historical structures of Native American in mass media.

Pamela J. Peters's multimedia project, Legacy of Exiled NDNZ began as a short film that has expanded into a full-length documentary along with an ongoing multimedia component about the history of American Indians living in Los Angeles. Her work presents personal stories of contemporary urban Indians in photography and film to commemorate the legacy of the Indian Relocation program, a U.S. federal program enacted to assimilate American Indians in the 1950s.

Be a Part of Advent Vespers Processional Party

The 37th Annual Advent Vespers is approaching rapidly! Ten to twelve thousand people come to the 'cathedral-like' Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis for Augsburg's Advent Vespers. Hundreds of Augsburg singers, instrumentalists and liturgical participants will lead these five services. Be a part of vespers by carrying a candle, torch banner, or bells in the gospel processional! This is a great way to settle into Advent and spend time with other Auggies.

The services are on Friday, 12/2, at 5pm & 8pm, and on Saturday, 12/3, at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm. Bus transportation between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran is provided, as well as meals and snacks.

Raising Money for Mission Trip

My name is Mulu Erana, I work in Custodial for 12 years. My favorite part is providing service to Augsburg students.

My daughter O'Quba Duressa is a hard worker. She loves to share about God, the Bible and helping people. She is 17 years old in 12 grade at Hope Academy and next year she is going to college. Her school is going on a mission trip to Dominican Republic November 11-19, 2016. The trip is $1300. We already have $500. There is $800 left.

Many of you help me two years ago in 2014 when O'Quba went on a mission trip. Thank you. She learned a lot how to help others and experience a different culture. I hope you will consider a donation. Any amount of money is good. If you feel interest I appreciate it.
