Classroom Strategies for Tense Moments - Next Tues.

Faculty and staff are invited to a live webinar on navigating difficult moments and conflict in the classroom, led by Kathy Obear, Ed.D, Co-Founder of the Social Justice Training Institute.

This webinar will equip faculty with:

-Tools to create an inclusive classroom from the start and negotiate working agreements that set the stage for meaningful dialogue.
-How to recognize when a classroom discussion becomes “difficult” for students and/or themselves – get tools and approaches to de-escalate triggered reactions and promote engaged conversation.
-Criteria to decide whether to engage in difficult conversations in the moment or table for a future setting.
-Techniques to revisit classroom situations that did not further learning or group development so that everyone can learn how to do better the next time.

Blackout: Open Mic

Join us for our first biyearly Open Mic Night! The theme will be Black Out, so don't forget to wear all black! This event will be held in the Augsburg Student Lounge, and it is an opportunity to come out and meet more people, bond with other Augsburg Students and community members, as well as a chance to showcase your work and support other amazing artists. Showcasing your art can include but is not limited to poetry, singing, playing an instrument, rapping, comedy, beat-boxing, dancing, etc. Sign-ups will start at 6 p.m. sharp. The list fills up fast so please come early.

Convocation Today: Peace Builder Karim El-Hibri

You will not want to miss Homecoming Convocation Today, Friday, Sept 23 from 10-11 a.m. in the Chapel. Come hear a preview of this year's Alumni Award Recipients as we kick off Homecoming Weekend with Augsburg Jazz Band and our Alumni Award recipients.

There will be a featured talk from First Decade Award Recipient, Karim El-Hibri. Karim serves as the strategic advisor and founding Board Member of the El-Hibri Foundation, a private grant-making organization that supports building an inclusive America by advancing peace and respect for diversity inspired by the universally shared values of Islam. The Foundation focuses on peace education and interfaith cooperation through grants and awards that recognize leadership, and programs that promote learning and inclusion. With his work through the El-Hibri Foundation, Karim is carrying out philanthropy for positive social change through community building, education, and peace building efforts. Karim continues to be a champion for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and the StepUP® Program.

Faculty and Staff Training: Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring

The Provost's Office, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Committee, and Human Resources are partnering to offer a training session for faculty and staff on Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring which will be held on Tuesday, October 11 in OGC 100, from 9:00 a.m. - noon.

The training will include a video and discussion facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson of Language and Culture Worldwide. We will be discussing unconscious bias and it's impact on the hiring and selection process and strategies we can use to de-bias situations.

Get Your Flu Shot Monday 9/26

Fall is officially over and flu season is upon us. The Minnesota Visiting Nurse Association will be on campus on Monday 9/26/16 from 10:30 - 1:30 p.m. administering flu shots. The flu shot clinic will be in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office located on the first floor of the Anderson Residence Hall.

Most insurances are accepted so please bring a photo ID and your insurance card. Cash or check also accepted and the cost is $36.

An additional flu shot clinic will be held Thursday 10/27/16 from 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. also in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office.

Any questions, please call the CWC office at 612-330-1707. No appointment is needed.

West Bank Crash Course - Next Week

West Bank Crash Course is a week-long introduction to the West Bank neighborhood and a celebration of and for local businesses, residents, artists, and guests. West Bank Crash Course is hosted by the West Bank Business Association and The Southern Theater. Muslim Identities in Minnesota

Are you interested in learning about Muslim Identities in Minnesota?

In the 21st century there is a plethora of clichés, stereotypes, and over-generalizations about Muslims in Minnesota, where there are also a variety of different ways of being Muslim.

Join Professor Cawo Abdi and Ph.D. candidate Nahid Khan to explore the diversity of Muslims in Minnesota today and the many contexts shaping their lives and identities. Professor Abdi will draw on her recently published book on the Somali diaspora, Elusive Jannah, and Khan will present data from her research on the portrayal of Islam and Muslims in Twin Cities media over the last several decades.

The event is FREE and OPEN to the public!
